Accessing proton number fluctuations in limited regions of phase space

In heavy ion collisions particle distributions fluctuate from event to event. It is interesting to study local fluctuations of a specific particle specie, e.g. baryons, in the transverse plane. Fluctuations of the harmonic flow provide an integrated measure of such fluctuations. An alternative approach is to study proton number fluctuations measured in a relatively narrow azimuthal angle window. Due to the transverse flow, particles registered in a narrow azimuthal angle window are emitted predominantly from a region of the fireball located at the same azimuthal angle. Similarly, it is informative to measure the covariance of the number of protons emitted in two opposite windows of azimuthal angles. The main difficulty lies in distinguishing effects of local baryon density fluctuations in the transverse plane from global particle density and collective flow fluctuations. These global volume and flow fluctuations can be estimated using some reference particles, e.g. charged mesons. Reliable estimates of such fluctuations can be constructed both for the second factorial cumulant of the proton number in an azimuthal angle window and for the covariance between two such windows. The simultaneous measurement of both quantities provides a sensitive probe of local baryon number fluctuations superimposed on top of a fluctuating fireball background density.

Probing flow fluctuations through factorization breaking of harmonic flows in heavy-ion collisions

We study factorization-breaking coefficients between the momentum dependent and momentum averaged flow vectors to probe flow fluctuations caused by initial-state fluctuations in heavy-ion collision. The coefficients for the flow vector squared and flow magnitude squared could be used for the extraction of flow angle decorrelations. We compare our model results with preliminary experimental data. We also present the predictions for the momentum dependent correlation between mixed flow harmonics.

Splitting of proton-antiproton directed flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

The rapidity dependent directed flow of particles produced in a relativistic heavy ion collision can be generated in the hydrodynamic expansion of a tilted source. The asymmetry of the pressure leads to a build up of a directed flow of matter with respect to the collision axis. The experimentally observed ordering of the directed flow of baryons, pions and antibaryons can be described as resulting from the expansion of a baryon inhomogeneous fireball. An uneven distribution of baryons in the transverse plane leads to an asymmetry in the collective push for protons and antiprotons. Precise measurements of the collective flow as a function of rapidity could serve as a strong constraint on mechanism of baryon stopping in the early phase of the collision.

Factorization breaking for higher moments of harmonic flow

We study correlations between harmonic flow vectors squared measured at different transverse momenta. One of the flow harmonics squared is taken at a fixed transverse momentum and correlated to the momentum averaged harmonic flow squared of the same order. Such four particle correlators, dependent on transverse momentum, have been recently measured experimentally. Factorization coefficients based on the ratio of such four-particle correlators allow the independent measurement of the flow vector and flow magnitude factorization breaking coefficient. Moreover, the correlation of the angles of flow harmonics as a function of transverse momentum can be extracted. Results are compared to preliminary data of the ALICE Collaboration. We also present predictions for the momentum dependent factorization breaking coefficient between mixed flow harmonics. The correlators with squares of mixed harmonics can serve as a way to independently measure the flow vector, flow magnitude, and flow angle correlations, and could be used to gain additional information on the fluctuating initial state and the dynamics in heavy-ion collisions.

Correlation coefficient between harmonic and transverse flow in heavy-ion collisions

The correlation between the harmonic flow and the transverse flow in relativistic heavy ion collisions is calculated in the hydrodynamic model. The partial correlation coefficient, corrected for fluctuations of multiplicity, is compared to experimental data. Estimators of the final transverse and harmonic flow are used to predict the value of the correlation coefficient from the moments of the initial distribution. A good description of the hydrodynamic simulation results is obtained if the estimator for the final transverse flow, besides the most important transverse size and entropy, includes also the eccentricities.

Elliptic flow in ultra-relativistic collisions with light polarized nuclei

Estimates for elliptic flow in collisions of polarized light nuclei with spin $j\ge1$ with a heavy nucleus are presented. In such collisions the azimuthal symmetry is broken via polarization of the wave function of the light nucleus, resulting in nonzero one-body elliptic flow coefficient evaluated relative to the polarization axis. Our estimates involve experimentally well known features of light nuclei, such as their quadrupole moment and the charge radius, yielding the one-body elliptic flow coefficient in the range from 1\% for collisions with the deuteron to 5\% for for collisions with $^{10}$B nucleus. Prospects of addressing the issue in the upcoming fixed-target experiment at the Large Hadron Collider are discussed.

Rapidity fluctuations in the initial state

We analyze two-particle pseudorapidity correlations in a simple model, where strings of fluctuating length are attached to wounded nucleons. The obtained straightforward formulas allow us to understand the anatomy of the correlations, i.e., to identify the component due to the fluctuation of the number of wounded nucleons and the contribution from the string length fluctuations. Our results reproduce qualitatively and semiquantitatively the basic features of the recent correlation measurements at the LHC.

Transverse momentum-flow correlations in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

The correlation between the transverse momentum and the azimuthal asymmetry the flow is studied. A correlation coefficient is defined between the average transverse momentum of hadrons emitted in an event and the square of the elliptic or triangular flow coefficient. The hydrodynamic model predicts a positive correlation of the transverse momentum with the elliptic flow, and almost no correlation with the triangular flow in Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies. In p-Pb collisions the new correlation observable is very sensitive to the mechanism of energy deposition in the first stage of the collision.

Wounded quarks in A+A, p+A, and p+p collisions

We explore predictions of the wounded quark model for particle production and properties of the initial state formed in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. The approach is applied uniformly to A+A collisions in a wide collision energy range, as well as for p+A and p+p collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We find that generically the predictions from wounded quarks for such features as eccentricities or initial sizes are close (within 15\%) to predictions of the wounded nucleon model with an amended binary component. A larger difference is found for the size in p+Pb system, where the wounded quark model yields a smaller (more compact) initial fireball than the standard wounded nucleon model. The inclusion of subnucleonic degrees of freedom allows us to analyze p+p collisions in an analogous way, with predictions that can be used in further collective evolution. The approximate linear dependence of particle production in A+A collisions on the number of wounded quarks, as found in previous studies, makes the approach based on wounded quarks natural. Importantly, at the LHC energies we find approximate uniformity in particle production from wounded quarks, where at a given collision energy per nucleon pair similar production of initial entropy per source is needed to explain the particle production from p+p collisions up to A+A collisions. We also discuss the sensitivity of the wounded quark model predictions to distribution of quarks in nucleons, distribution of nucleons in nuclei, and to the quark-quark inelasticity profile in the impact parameter. In our procedure, the quark-quark inelasticity profile is chosen in such a way that the experiment-based parametrization of the proton-proton inelasticity profile is properly reproduced. The parameters of the overlaid multiplicity distribution is fixed from p+p and p+Pb data.

A simple model for rapidity fluctuations in the initial state of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Two-particle pseudorapidity correlations are analyzed in a simple model, where in the initial stage of the reaction multiple sources, extended in rapidity, are created. We show how the fluctuations of the length of the sources in rapidity generate correlations in the initial entropy deposition, which later contribute to the observed longitudinal correlations in hadron production. Our analysis, which is analytic and leads to straightforward formulas, allows us to understand the structure of the correlations, in particular to identify the component related to the fluctuation of the numbers of sources and the component from the length fluctuations. We also present the results in terms of the expansion in the basis of the Legendre polynomials. A number of further effects is discussed, such as smearing of the pseudorapidity distributions or resonance decays. Our results reproduce qualitatively and semiquantitatively the basic features of the recent measurements at the LHC.

Hydrodynamic modeling of 3He-Au collisions at sqrt(sNN)=200 GeV

Collective flow and femtoscopy in ultrarelativistic 3He-Au collisions are investigated within the 3+1-dimensional (3+1D) viscous event-by-event hydrodynamics. We evaluate elliptic and triangular flow coefficients as functions of the transverse momentum. We find the typical long-range ridge structures in the two-particle correlations in the relative azimuth and pseudorapidity, in the pseudorapidity directions of both Au and 3He. We also make predictions for the pionic interferometric radii, which decrease with the transverse momentum of the pion pair. All features found hint on collectivity of the dynamics of the system formed in 3He-Au collisions, with hydrodynamics leading to quantitative agreement with the up-to-now released data.

Hydrodynamic modeling of pseudorapidity flow correlations in relativistic heavy-ion collisions and the torque effect

We analyze correlations between the event-plane angles in different intervals of pseudorapidity within the 3+1-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics with the Glauber-model initial conditions. As predicted earlier, the fluctuations in the particle production mechanism in the earliest stage, together with asymmetry of the emission profiles in pseudorapidity from the forward- and backward going wounded nucleons, lead to the torque effect, namely, decorrelation of the event-plane angles in distant pseudorapidity bins. We use two- or three-bin measures of correlation functions to quantify the effect, with the latter compared to the recent data from the CMS collaboration. We find a sizable torque effect, with magnitude larger at RHIC than at the LHC.

Multi-particle long-range rapidity correlations from fluctuation of the fireball longitudinal shape

We calculate the genuine long-range multi-particle rapidity correlation functions, $C_{n}(y_1,...,y_n)$ for $n=3,4,5,6$, originating from fluctuations of the fireball longitudinal shape. In these correlation functions any contribution from the short-range two-particle correlations, and in general up to $(n-1)$-particle in $C_n$, is suppressed. The information about the fluctuating fireball shape in rapidity is encoded in the cumulants of coefficients of the orthogonal polynomial expansion of particle distributions in rapidity.

Rapidity dependence of elliptic and triangular flow in proton-nucleus collisions from collective dynamics

The rapidity dependence of elliptic, $v_2$, and triangular, $v_3$, flow coefficients in proton-nucleus (p+A) collisions is predicted in hydrodynamics and in a multi-phase transport model (AMPT). We find that $v_n$ ($n=2,3$) on a nucleus side is significantly larger than on a proton side and the ratio between the two, $v_n^{\rm Pb}/v_n^{\rm p}$, weekly depends on the transverse momentum of produced particles.

preprint2015arXiv

The torque effect and fluctuations of entropy deposition in rapidity in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions

The decorrelation of the orientation of the event-plane angles in the initial state of relativistic Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions, the "torque effect," is studied in a model of entropy deposition in the longitudinal direction involving fluctuations of the longitudinal source profile on large scales. The radiation from a single wounded nucleon is asymmetric in space-time rapidity. It is assumed that the extent in rapidity of the region of deposited entropy is random. Fluctuations in the deposition of entropy from each source increase the event-plane decorrelation: for Pb-Pb collisions they improve the description of the data, while for p-Pb collisions the mechanism is absolutely essential to generate any sizable decorrelation. We also show that the experimental data for rank-four flow may be explained via folding of the elliptic flow. The results suggest the existence of long range fluctuations in the space-time distribution of entropy in the initial stages of relativistic nuclear collisions.

Two-particle correlations in pseudorapidity in a hydrodynamic model

Two-particle pseudorapidity correlations of hadrons produced in Pb+Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider are analyzed in the framework of a model based on viscous 3+1-dimensional hydrodynamics with the Glauber initial condition. Based on our results, we argue that the correlation from resonance decays, formed at a late stage of the evolution, produce significant effects. In particular, their contribution to the event averages of the coefficients of the expansion in the Legendre basis explain 60-70% of the experimental values. We have proposed an accurate way to compute these <a_n a_m> coefficients, independent of the binning in pseudorapidity, and tested a double expansion of the two-particle correlation function in the azimuth and pseudorapidity, which allows us to investigate the pseudorapidity correlations between harmonics of the collective flow. In our model, these quantities are also dominated by non-flow effects from the resonance decays. Finally, our method can be used to compute higher-order cumulants for the expansion in orthonormal polynomials which offers a suitable way of eliminating the non-flow effects from the correlation analyses.

Alpha clusters and collective flow in ultra-relativistic carbon - heavy nucleus collisions

We investigate ultrarelativistic collisions of the 12C nucleus with heavy targets and show that the harmonic flow measures based on ratios of cumulant moments are particularly suited to study the intrinsic deformation of the 12C wave function. That way one can probe the expected alpha clusterization in the ground state, which leads to large initial triangularity in the shape of the fireball in the transverse plane. We show that the clusterization effect results in very characteristic behavior of the ratios of the cumulant moments as functions of the number of participant nucleons, both for the elliptic and triangular deformations. Thus the experimental event-by-event studies of harmonic flow in ultrarelativistic light-heavy collisions may offer a new window to look at the ground-state structure of light nuclei.

Azimuthally sensitive femtoscopy in event-by-event hydrodynamics

We analyze the pion femtoscopy correlations in noncentral Au-Au and Pb-Pb collisions. The azimuthally sensitive Hanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) method is used to extract the interferometry radii depending on the azimuthal angle with respect to the second and third-order event plane. The results are in semiquantitative agreement with the STAR collaboration data on the HBT radii with respect to the second-order reaction plane, with the preliminary PHENIX collaboration data on the HBT radii with respect to the third-order reaction plane in Au-Au collisions at 200GeV, and with the preliminary ALICE collaboration data for the HBT radii with respect to the second-order event plane for Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76TeV.

preprint2014arXiv

Collective flow in ultrarelativistic $^3$He-Au collisions

The triangular flow in ultrarelativistic $^3$He-Au collisions at RHIC energies is enhanced due to the triangular arrangement of the nucleon configurations in $^3$He. We study the fireball eccentricities in the Glauber Monte Carlo model and find that since the configurations of the projectile $^3$He are elongated triangles, the created fireball has a large ellipticity and a smaller triangularity. The dependence of the triangularity on centrality is weak, so it cannot be extracted from the centrality dependence of the triangular flow $v_3$, as it is dominated by the centrality dependence of the hydrodynamic response. We propose to look at the centrality dependence of the ratio $v_n\{4\}/v_n\{2\}$, where the uncertainties from the hydrodynamic response cancel, and show that the basic signature of the geometry-driven collective flow is the raise of the ratio $v_3\{4\}/v_3\{2\}$ with the number of participant nucleons for centralities less than 10%.

Femtoscopy analysis of d-Au interactions at $\sqrt{s}=200$GeV

The femtoscopy correlation radii for d-Au collisions at $200$GeV are calculated in the hydrodynamic model and compared to PHENIX collaboration data. For asymmetric systems, such as d-Au or p-Pb collisions, the correlation radius $R_{out-long}$ is estimated and predicted to be non-zero. It appears due to different lifetimes of the parts of the fireball at positive and negative rapidities. Azimuthally sensitive Hanbury Brown-Twiss analysis with respect to the second order event plane shows a significant angular dependence of the radii. It reflects the strong azimuthal asymmetry of the d-Au source geometry and flow for central interactions.

Fluctuation induced equality of multi-particle eccentricities for four or more particles

We discuss eccentricities (ellipticity and triangularity) generated in nucleus-nucleus and proton-nucleus collisions. We define multi-particle eccentricities $ε_n\{m\}$ which are associated with the $n'th$ angular multipole moment for $m$ particles. We show that in the limit of fluctuation dominance all of the $ε_n\{m\}$'s are approximately equal for $m \ge 4$. For dynamics linearly responding to these eccentricities such as hydrodynamics or proposed in this paper weakly interacting field theory, these relations among eccentricities are translated into relations among flow moments $v_n\{m\}$. We explicitly demonstrate it with hydrodynamic calculations.

Hydrodynamic approach to p-Pb

The formation and collective expansion of the fireball formed in ultrarelativistic p-A and d-A collisions is discussed. Predictions of the hydrodynamic model are compared to recent experimental results. The presence of strong final state interaction effects in the small dense systems is consistent with the observed azimuthal anisotropy of the flow and with the mass dependence of the average transverse momentum and of the elliptic flow. This raises the question of the mechanism explaining such a rapid build up of the collective flow and the large degree of local equilibration needed to justify this scenario.

Hydrodynamic models of ultrarelativistic collisions

We discuss the use of the hydrodynamic model for the description of the evolution of dense matter formed in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. The collective flow observed in heavy-ion collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and at the CERN Large Hadron Collider is consistent with the assumption that a fireball of strongly interacting matter is formed. Experimental results from p-Pb and d-Au collisions show similar phenomena, which suggests that collective expansion appears in small systems as well. We review the recent application of the hydrodynamic model to small systems and discuss limitations and possible further checks of this scenario.

Pion, kaon, and proton femtoscopy in Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$=2.76 TeV modeled in 3+1D hydrodynamics

Femtoscopy is providing information on system size and its dynamics in heavy-ion collisions. At ultra-relativistic energies, such as those obtained at the LHC, significant production of pions, kaons and protons enables femtoscopic measurements for these particles. In particular the dependence of system size on pair momentum and particle type is interpreted as evidence for strong collective flow. Such phenomena are naturally modeled by hydrodynamics. We present calculations within the 3+1D hydrodynamic model coupled to statistical hadronization code THERMINATOR 2, corresponding to Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=$2.76 TeV. We obtain femtoscopic radii for pions, kaons, and protons, as a function of pair transverse momentum and collision centrality. We find that an approximate universal scaling of radii with pair transverse mass and final state event multiplicity is observed, and discuss the consequences for the interpretation of experimental measurements.

Collective dynamics of the high-energy proton-nucleus collisions

We analyze the proton-lead collisions at the LHC energy of 5.02TeV in the three-stage approach, previously used to successfully describe the relativistic A-A collisions. The approach consists of the early phase, modeled with the Glauber model, the event-by-event viscous 3+1 dimensional (3+1 D) relativistic hydrodynamics, and the statistical hadronization at freeze-out. We show that features typical of collective dynamics, such as the harmonic flow and the ridge structures in the two-particle correlations in relative azimuth and pseudorapidity, may be naturally explained in our framework. In the proton-nucleus system the harmonic flow is generated from an initially event-by-event deformed system and is entirely due to these initial fluctuations. Notably, fluctuations of strength of the initial Glauber sources which yield the observed distribution of hadron multiplicities and, at the same time, lead to correct values of the elliptic flow coefficients both from the two- and four-particle cumulant method, as measured by the ATLAS collaboration. The azimuthally asymmetric flow is not modified significantly when changing the viscosity coefficient, the initial time for the collective expansion, or the initial size of the fireball. The results present an estimate of the collective component in the two-particle correlations measured experimentally. We demonstrate that the harmonic flow coefficients can be experimentally measured with methods based on large rapidity gaps which reduce some of the other sources of correlations.

Collective dynamics of the p-Pb collisions at the LHC

We review the signatures for the soft collective dynamics in highest-multiplicity ultrarelativistic p-Pb collisions and show that the effects are well described in a three-stage model, consisting of the event-by-event Glauber initial conditions, viscous 3+1D hydrodynamics, and statistical hadronization. In particular, we discuss the ridges in two-particle correlations in the relative azimuth and pseudorapidity, the elliptic and triangular flow coefficients, and the mass hierarchy of observables sensitive to flow.

Contributions to the event-by-event charge asymmetry dependence for the elliptic flow of pi^{+} and pi^{-} in heavy-ion collisions

We discuss various contributions to the event-by-event charge-asymmetry dependence of $π^{+}$ and $π^{-}$ elliptic flow, recently measured by the STAR Collaboration at RHIC. It is shown that under general assumptions, the difference between $v_2^+$ and $v_2^-$ at a given fluctuating value of an asymmetry parameter, $A$, is a linear function of $A$, as observed in the preliminary data. We discuss two mechanisms that are qualitatively consistent with the experimental data and result in a signal of the correct order of magnitude. Our subsequent hydrodynamic calculations, assuming local charge conservation at freeze-out, yield a qualitative and partial quantitative understanding of the observed signal, so offering a detailed test of the hydrodynamic model in heavy-ion collisions.

GLISSANDO 2: GLauber Initial-State Simulation AND mOre..., ver. 2

We present an extended version of GLISSANDO, a Monte-Carlo generator for Glauber-like models of the initial stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The increased functionality of the code incorporates a parametrization of shape of nuclei, including light nuclei needed in the NA61 experiment, the nuclear deformation, a possibility of using correlated distributions of nucleons in nuclei read from external files, an option of overlaying distributions of produced particles dependent on the space-time rapidity, the inclusion of the core-corona effect, or the output of the source distributions that can be used in event-by-event hydrodynamics. Together with other features, such as incorporation of various variants of Glauber models, or the implementation of a realistic NN collision profile, the generator offers a realistic and practical approach to describe the early phase of the collision in 3+1 dimensions; the predictions may later be used in modeling the intermediate evolution phase, e.g., with hydrodynamics. The software is integrated with the ROOT platform. The supplied scripts compute and plot numerous features of the distributions, such as the multiplicity distributions and centrality classes, harmonic asymmetry coefficients and their correlations, forward-backward correlations, etc. The code can also be used for the proton-nucleus and deuteron-nucleus collisions.

Hydrodynamic models of particle production

Viscous hydrodynamics gives a satisfactory description of the transverse momentum spectra, of the elliptic and triangular flow, and of the femtoscopic correlations for particles produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. On general grounds, a similar collective behavior has been predicted for proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions at the LHC. We present results of the hydrodynamics calculation of the elliptic and triangular flow in p-Pb. We discuss the mass dependence of flow coefficients and of the average transverse momentum for identified particles.

Mass hierarchy in identified particle distributions in proton-lead collisions

We study the mass dependence for identified-particle average transverse momentum and harmonic flow coefficients in proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions, recently measured at the LHC. The collective mechanism in the p-Pb system predicts a specific mass ordering in these observables: the growth of the average transverse momentum with the particle mass and a mass splitting of the elliptic flow coefficient, i.e., smaller differential elliptic flow of protons than pions for p_T<2 GeV. This provides an opportunity to distinguish between the collective scenario and the mechanism based on the initial gluon dynamics in the evolution of the p-Pb system.

Size of the emission source and collectivity in ultra-relativistic p-Pb collisions

The interferometric radii in the system formed in ultra-relativistic proton-lead collisions are investigated in a framework based on event-by-event 3+1 dimensional viscous hydrodynamics. We argue that the most central p-Pb collisions undergoing collective expansion behave similarly to the peripheral nucleus-nucleus collisions. The interferometric observables can serve as signatures of the formation of an extended fireball.

The rapidity dependence of the average transverse momentum in p+Pb collisions at the LHC: the Color Glass Condensate versus hydrodynamics

We show that in proton-lead (p+Pb) collisions at the LHC, the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) and hydrodynamics lead to qualitatively different behavior of the average transverse momentum, <p_T>, with the particles rapidity. In hydrodynamics, the <p_T> decreases as one goes from zero rapidity, y=0, to the proton fragmentation region since the number of particles decreases. In contrast, in the CGC the saturation momentum increases as one goes from y=0 to the proton fragmentation region, and so the <p_T> increases. At the LHC, the difference between the two models may be large enough to be tested experimentally.

Charge balancing and the fall off of the ridge

Two-dimensional correlation functions in $Δη-Δϕ$ for charged hadrons emitted in heavy-ion collisions are calculated in event-by-event hydrodynamics. With the Glauber model for the initial density distributions in the transverse plane and elongated density profiles in the longitudinal direction, the flow patterns in the azimuthal angle of the two-dimensional correlation function are properly reproduced. We show that the additional fall-off of the same-side ridge in the longitudinal direction can be explained as an effect of local charge conservation at a late stage of the evolution. This additional non-flow effect increases the harmonic flow coefficients for the unlike-sign particle pairs.

Charge conservation and the shape of the ridge of two-particle correlations in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We demonstrate that in the framework of the event-by-event hydrodynamics followed by statistical hadronization, the proper charge conservation in the mechanism of hadron production provides the crucial non-flow component and leads to agreement with the two-dimensional two-particle correlation data in relative azimuthal angle and pseudorapidity at soft transverse momenta (p_T<2GeV). The fall-off of the same-side ridge in relative pseudorapidity follows from the fact that a pair of particles with balanced charges is emitted from the same fluid element, whose collective velocity collimates the momenta of the pair. We reproduce basic experimental features of the two-dimensional correlation function, such as the dependence on the relative charge and centrality, as well as the related charge balance functions and the harmonic flow coefficients as functions of the relative pseudorapidity.

Correlations from hydrodynamic flow in p-Pb collisions

Two-particle correlations in relative rapidity and azimuth are studied for the p-Pb collisions at the LHC energy of 5.02 TeV in the framework of event-by-event 3+1-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics. It is found that for the highest-multiplicity events the observed ridge structures appear in a natural way, suggesting that collective flow may be an important element in the evolution of the system. Forward-backward flow correlations in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We discuss the torque effect in the initial fireball formed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, manifesting itself, on the event-by-event basis, in a relative angle between the principal axes of the transverse momentum distributions in the forward and backward rapidity regions. The torque follows from two natural features: 1) the sources of particles (e.g. wounded nucleons) emit predominantly in their forward hemispheres, and 2) there exist fluctuations in the transverse distribution of sources from the two colliding nuclei. On the average, the standard event-by-event deviation of the relative torque angle is about 20 degrees for the central and 10 degrees for the mid-peripheral collisions. The hydrodynamic expansion of a torqued fireball leads to a torqued collective flow of the fluid, which, in turn, yields torqued principal axes of the transverse-momentumdistributions at different rapidities. We discuss experimental measures based on cumulants involving particles in different rapidity regions, which allow for a quantitative extraction of the effect from the experimental data. We estimate the non-flow contributions from resonance decays with the help of THERMINATOR.

Forward-backward rapidity correlations in relativistic heavy ion collisions : torqued fireball

Statistical fluctuations in the transverse distribution of sources in relativistic heavy ion collisions and an asymmetric emission profile associated with the wounded nucleons lead to rapidity dependence of the reaction plane. The size of this effect is estimated for the gold-gold collisions at the highest RHIC energy ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 \mathrm{GeV}$) in the Glauber model using GLISSANDO. The hydrodynamical evolution of the resulting torqued fireball is carried out in 3+1 dimensions considering a perfect fluid. Hadronization is simulated using THERMINATOR including non-flow contribution coming from resonance decays. Some experimental measures that can be used to detect the torque effect are proposed.

Particle spectra in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV

Particle production in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV is studied in the (3+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic model. The shapes of the calculated transverse momentum spectra of pions, kaons, protons, Xis, and Omegas are in satisfactory agreement with preliminary data of the ALICE Collaboration, while the particle ratio proton/pion is slightly overpredicted, and the strange barion yields are underpredicted.

preprint2012arXiv

Torqued fireballs in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We show that the fluctuations in the wounded-nucleon model of the initial stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions, together with the natural assumption that the forward (backward) moving wounded nucleons emit particles preferably in the forward (backward) direction, lead to an event-by-event torqued fireball. The principal axes associated with the transverse shape are rotated in the forward region in the opposite direction than in the backward region. On the average, the standard deviation of the relative torque angle between the forward and backward rapidity regions is about 20deg for the central and 10deg for the mid-peripheral collisions. The hydrodynamic expansion of a torqued fireball leads to a torqued collective flow, yielding, in turn, torqued principal axes of the transverse-momentum distributions at different rapidities. We propose experimental measures, based on cumulants involving particles in different rapidity regions, which should allow for a quantitative determination of the effect from the data. To estimate the non-flow contributions from resonance decays we run Monte Carlo simulations with THERMINATOR. If the event-by-event torque effect is found in the data, it will support the assumptions concerning the fluctuations in the early stage of the fireball formation, as well as the hypothesis of the asymmetric rapidity shape of the emission functions of the moving sources in the nucleus-nucleus collisions.

Transverse-momentum fluctuations in relativistic heavy-ion collisions from event-by-event viscous hydrodynamics

We analyze event-by-event fluctuations of the transverse momentum in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC in the framework based on the fluctuating Glauber-model initial conditions, event-by-event (3+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics, and statistical hadronization. We use the scaled fluctuation measure < Delta p_Ti Delta p_Tj > / << p_T >>. The identified "geometric" mechanism of generating the transverse-momentum fluctuations from the initial size fluctuations, transmitted to the final statistical-hadronization phase with hydrodynamics, is capable of easily reproducing the magnitude of the effect and explains the basic features of the data. On the other hand, it is somewhat too strong, hinting on modification of the popular Glauber approach to the earliest phase of the collision. We have checked that the considered measure is insensitive of the values of the shear and bulk viscosity coefficients, the freeze-out temperature, and the smoothing parameter for the initial distribution. It remains unaltered in the core-corona picture and is insensitive to the transverse-momentum conservation, approximately imposed in the statistical hadronization.

Components of the elliptic flow in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV

We calculate the elliptic flow of charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV in relativistic viscous hydrodynamics. The recent data of the ALICE Collaboration on the elliptic flow as function of the centrality can be very well described using the hydrodynamic expansion of a fluid with a small shear viscosity eta/s=0.08. The elliptic flow as function of the transverse momentum shows systematic deviations from a hydrodynamic behavior in the small momenta region pt<800MeV. It indicates that a non-negligible contribution of non-thermalized particles from jet fragmentation is present.

Indications of early thermalization in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

The directed flow of particles emitted from the fireball created in a heavy-ion collision is shown to be a very sensitive measure of the pressure equilibration in the first 1 fm/c of the evolution. Performing a 3+1 dimensional relativistic hydrodynamic calculation with nonequilibrated longitudinal and transverse pressures, we show that the directed flow is strongly reduced if the pressure imbalance survives for even a short time. Transverse momentum spectra, elliptic flow and interferometry correlation radii are not very sensitive to this early pressure anisotropy. Comparison with the data points toward a short equilibration time of the order of $0.25$fm/c or less.

Modeling global event properties using hydrodynamics from RHIC to LHC

The relativistic hydrodynamic model is applied to describe the expansion of the dense matter formed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The hydrodynamic expansion of the fluid, supplemented with the statistical emission of hadrons at freeze-out gives a satisfactory description of the observables for particles emitted with soft momenta. Experimental data for the transverse momentum spectra, elliptic flow and interferometry radii give constraints on the properties of the fluid, its equation of state and viscosity coefficients. The role of the fluctuations of the initial profile of the energy density is discussed.

Bulk and shear viscosities of matter created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We study the effects of the shear and bulk viscosities in the hadronic phase on the expansion of the fireball and on the particle production in relativistic heavy ion collisions. Comparing simulation with or without viscosity in the hadronic matter we find that elliptic flow observables strongly dependent on dissipative effects in the late stage. On the other hand, interferometry radii are sensitive, through the early transverse flow, on the value of the viscosity at high temperatures. We present first calculations including the effects of bulk viscosity in the hadronic phase and in the hadron emission. We find them important in obtaining a small freeze-out temperature consistent with the measured transverse momentum spectra and elliptic flow of identified particles.

Directed flow in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions

We study the generation of directed flow in the hydrodynamic expansion of the hot matter formed in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions at 200GeV. The experimentally observed negative directed flow in a wide range of central pseudorapidities isreproduced assuming that the fireball is tilted away from the collision axis. The tilt of the source is consistent with a preferential emission in the forward/backward hemisphere from forward/backward participating nucleons. The model reproduces the experimentally observed scaling of the directed flow when going from Au-Au to Cu-Cu systems.

Elliptic flow in proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV

The angular correlations measured in proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV are decomposed into contributions from back to back emission and elliptic flow. Modeling the dominant term in the correlation functions as a momentum conservation effect or as an effect of the initial transverse velocity of the source, the remaining elliptic flow component can be estimated. The elliptic flow coefficient extracted from the CMS Collaboration data is 0.04-0.08. No additional small-angle, ridge-like correlations are needed to explain the experimental data.

Measuring the thermalization time

A new method of measuring the pressure anisotropy in the early stage of heavy-ion collisions is discussed. It is shown that the transverse momentum spectra, elliptic flow and interferometry radii are not sensitive to the early anisotropy. We propose the directed flow as a measure of the early transverse and longitudinal pressures. Calculations indicate that the transverse and longitudinal pressures equilibrate in less than 0.25 fm/c.

Observation of the collective flow in proton-proton collisions

The scenario of a collective expansion of matter created in proton-proton (p-p) collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is discussed. Assuming a small transverse size and a formation time of 0.1fm/c of the source we observe the build up of a substantial transverse flow in relativistic hydrodynamic simulations. In order to demonstrate the collectivity in p-p collisions we propose to look at the multiplicity dependence of the elliptic flow coefficient. If high multiplicity events originate from azimuthally asymmetric events containing two flux tubes, an observable signal above the statistical fluctuations in the measured elliptic flow could appear.

Flow, spectra and HBT radii in heavy-ion collisions

The expansion of the fireball created in relativistic heavy ion collisions is described using the 3+1D hydrodynamical model. Experimentally observed transverse momentum spectra at different rapdities, elliptic flow and HBT correlations of produced particles can be reproduced. We give estimates of shear viscosity corrections at freeze-out, which we find important only for the elliptic flow coefficient.
