Geometric arcs and fundamental groups of rigid spaces

We develop the notion of a geometric covering of a rigid space X, which yields a much larger class of covering spaces than that studied previously by de Jong. Geometric coverings of X are closed under disjoint unions and are étale local on X. If X is connected, its geometric coverings form a tame infinite Galois category, and hence are classified by a topological group. The definition is based on the property of lifting of "geometric arcs," making it similar to geometric coverings of schemes studied by Bhatt and Scholze as well as semicoverings of topological spaces introduced by Brazas.

Global Frobenius Liftability I

We formulate a conjecture characterizing smooth projective varieties in positive characteristic whose Frobenius morphism can be lifted modulo $p^2$ - we expect that such varieties, after a finite étale cover, admit a toric fibration over an ordinary abelian variety. We prove that this assertion implies a conjecture of Occhetta and Wiśniewski, which states that in characteristic zero a smooth image of a projective toric variety is a toric variety. To this end we analyse the behaviour of toric varieties in families showing some generization and specialization results. Furthermore, we prove a positive characteristic analogue of Winkelmann's theorem on varieties with trivial logarithmic tangent bundle (generalising a result of Mehta-Srinivas), and thus obtaining an important special case of our conjecture. Finally, using deformations of rational curves we verify our conjecture for homogeneous spaces, solving a problem posed by Buch-Thomsen-Lauritzen-Mehta.

Global Frobenius Liftability II: Surfaces and Fano Threefolds

In this article, a sequel to "Global Frobenius Liftability I" (math:1708:03777v2), we continue the development of a comprehensive theory of Frobenius liftings modulo $p^2$. We study compatibility of divisors and closed subschemes with Frobenius liftings, Frobenius liftings of blow-ups, descent under quotients by some group actions, stability under base change, and the properties of associated F-splittings. Consequently, we characterise Frobenius liftable surfaces and Fano threefolds, confirming the conjecture stated in our previous paper.

Hodge symmetry for rigid varieties via log hard Lefschetz

Motivated by a question of Hansen and Li, we show that a smooth and proper rigid analytic space $X$ with projective reduction satisfies Hodge symmetry in the following situations: (1) the base non-archimedean field $K$ is of residue characteristic zero, (2) $K$ is $p$-adic and $X$ has good ordinary reduction, (3) $K$ is $p$-adic and $X$ has "combinatorial reduction."' We also reprove a version of their result, Hodge symmetry for $H^1$, without the use of moduli spaces of semistable sheaves. All of this relies on cases of Kato's log hard Lefschetz conjecture, which we prove for $H^1$ and for log schemes of "combinatorial type."

Some elementary examples of non-liftable schemes

We present some simple examples of smooth projective varieties in positive characteristic, arising from linear algebra, which do not admit a lifting neither to characteristic zero, nor to the ring of second Witt vectors. Our first construction is the blow-up of the graph of the Frobenius morphism of a homogeneous space. The second example is a blow-up of $\mathbb{P}^3$ in a 'purely characteristic-$p$' configuration of points and lines.

$K(π, 1)$-neighborhoods and comparison theorems

A technical ingredient in Faltings' original approach to p-adic comparison theorems involves the construction of $K(π, 1)$-neighborhoods for a smooth scheme X over a mixed characteristic dvr with a perfect residue field: every point of X has an open neighborhood whose general fiber is a $K(π, 1)$ scheme (a notion analogous to having a contractible universal cover). We show how to extend this result to the logarithmically smooth case, which might help to simplify some proofs in p-adic Hodge theory. The main ingredient of the proof is a variant of a trick of Nagata used in his proof of the Noether Normalization Lemma.

Frobenius Push-Forwards on Quadrics

We generalize, explain and simplify Langer's results concerning Frobenius direct images of line bundles on quadrics, describing explicitly the decompositions of higher Frobenius push-forwards of arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay bundles into indecomposables, with an additional emphasis on the case of characteristic two. These results are applied to check which Frobenius push-forwards of the structure sheaf are tilting.
