Collisionless plasma interpenetration in a strong magnetic field for laboratory astrophysics experiments

A theoretical analysis for astrophysics-oriented laser-matter interaction experiments in the presence of a strong ambient magnetic field is presented. It is shown that the plasma collision in the ambient magnetic field implies significant perturbations in the electron density and magnetic field distribution. This transient stage is difficult to observe in astrophysical phenomena, but it could be investigated in laboratory experiments. Analytic models are presented, which are supported by particle-in-cell simulations.

Giga-Gauss scale quasistatic magnetic field generation with laser

A simple setup for the generation of ultra-intense quasistatic magnetic fields is proposed and analysed. Estimations and numerical Particle-In-Cell calculations show that magnetic fields of gigagauss scale may be generated with conventional powerful relativistic lasers interacting with the appropriate targets of a special geometry. The setup may be useful for a wide range of applications, from laboratory astrophysics to magnetized ICF schemes.

Harmonics Generation in Ultra-Thin Nanofilms Irradiated by Intense Nonrelativistic Short Laser Pulse

The problem of harmonics generation in nanotargets is considered at the range of parameters (a nanotarget diameter and a pump laser intensity) when the oscillation amplitude of an electron in a target is much larger than the target width. Electron motion in charged nanotargets in the presence of a laser field of different (non-relativistic) strength is considered. It is demonstarted that for lasers of infrared frequencies clusters do not posess strong enough potential to bound electrons with large oscillation amplitudes. Opposite to clusters, nanofilms were found to be very perspective targets in the problem considered. A simple analytic model and molecular dynamic simulations showed increased harmonics generation when the oscillation amplitude of electrons in a film becomes much larger, than the film width. Different regimes of generation are briefly discussed.
