8Be Nuclear Data Evaluation

An R-matrix analysis of experimental nuclear data on the reactions 4He(alpha,alpha), 4He(alpha,p), 4He(alpha,d), 7Li(p,alpha), 7Li(p,p), 7Li(p,n), 7Be(n,p), 6Li(d,alpha), 6Li(d,p), 6Li(d,n) and 6Li(d,d), leading to the 8Be intermediate state, has been completed in the last two years. About 4700 data points from 69 experimental references are included. The excitation energy above the 8Be ground state is 25-26 MeV for all reactions except 4He(alpha,alpha) and 7Be(n,p). The data for the reactions 4He(alpha,alpha) and 6Li(d,d) do not fit well, but the other reactions fit with a chi^2/(point) of less than the overall value of 7.9. Most of the 19 resonances found in the R-matrix analysis correspond to resonances formerly known from experiment. Evaluated integrated 4He(alpha,p), 4He(alpha,d), 7Li(p,alpha), 7Li(p,n), 7Be(n,p), 6Li(d,alpha), 6Li(d,p) and 6Li(d,n) reaction cross-sections are presented. Evaluated cross-section and angular dependence files in ENDF format were prepared for the twelve reactions p 7Li, n 7Be, d 6Li -> alpha 4He, p 7Li, n 7Be, d 6Li. Maxwellian averaged temperature-dependent cross-sections in NDI format were prepared for the six reactions 7Li(p,alpha), 7Li(p,n), 7Be(n,p), 6Li(d,alpha), 6Li(d,p) and 6Li(d,n).

Interpretation of the Theta+ as an isotensor pentaquark with weakly decaying partners

The Theta+(1540), recently observed at LEPS, DIANA and CLAS, is hypothesized to be an isotensor resonance. This implies the existence of a multiplet where the Theta++, Theta+ and Theta0 have isospin-violating strong decays, and the Theta+++ and Theta- have weak decays and so are long-lived. Production mechanisms for these states are discussed. The J^P assignment of the Theta is most likely 1/2^- or 3/2^-.

Pseudovector mesons, hybrids and glueballs

We consider glueball- (hybrid) meson mixing for the low-lying four pseudovector states. The h_1'(1380) decays dominantly to K*K with some presence in rho pi and omega eta. The newly observed h_1(1600) has a D- to S-wave width ratio to omega eta which makes its interpretation as a conventional meson unlikely. We predict the decay pattern of the isopartner conventional or hybrid meson b_1(1650). A notably narrow s sbar partner h_1'(1810) is predicted.

Tensor glueball-meson mixing phenomenology

The overpopulated isoscalar tensor states are sifted using Schwinger-type mass relations. Two solutions are found: one where the glueball is the fJ(2220), and one where the glueball is more distributed, with f2(1820) having the largest component. The f2(1565) and fJ(1710) cannot be accommodated as glueball-(hybrid) meson mixtures in the absense of significant coupling to decay channels. f2'(1525) -> pi pi is in agreement with experiment. The fJ(2220) decays neither flavour democratically nor is narrow.

Gluonic Excitations' Millennial Finale

We provide an overview of theoretical developments on hybrid mesons and glueballs in the last year at this turn of the millenium conference. Cracks in potential models of conventional mesons are developing. Hybrid meson adiabatic surfaces have been calculated and interpreted, experimental J^PC exotics have hybrid meson, four-quark state or non-resonant interpretations, and the strong decay mechanism of hybrids has been studied. All theoretical progress on hybrid mesons in the last year is mentioned. Overall features of glueballs are visited: decays and the successes of the large N_c limit. Two promising experimental areas are mentioned: charmonium hybrids at B-factories and s sbar hybrids at Jefferson Lab.

Scalar Glueball Mixing and Decay

We provide the first explanation of the counter-intuitive scalar glueball couplings to pseudoscalar mesons found in lattice QCD and predict hitherto uncalculated decay modes. Significant a_1 pi and (pi pi)_S (pi pi)_S couplings are found. We demonstrate the equivalence of linear and quadratic mass matrices for glueball-quarkonium mixing. The equivalence of formalisms which deal with a glueball-quarkonium basis and only a quarkonium basis is demonstrated. We show that the f_0(1500) is not the heaviest state arising from glueball-quarkonium mixing for a glueball mass consistent with lattice QCD. The masses and couplings of scalar mesons, as well as their valence content, are calculated.

Implications of a J^PC exotic

Recent experimental data from BNL on the isovector J^PC =1^-+ exotic at 1.6 GeV in ρπindicate the existence of a non-quarkonium state consistent with lattice gauge theory predictions. We discuss how further experiments can strengthen this conclusion. We show that the ρπ, η'πand ηπcouplings of this state qualitatively support the hypothesis that it is a hybrid meson, although other interpretations cannot be eliminated.

Photo-- and Electroproduction of $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ exotics

We estimate the kinematic dependence of the exclusive photo-- and electroproduction of $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ exotic mesons due to $π$ exchange. We show that the kinematic dependence is largely independent of the exotic meson form factor, which is explicitly derived for a $1^{-+}$ isovector hybrid meson in the flux-tube model of Isgur and Paton. The relevance to experiments currently planned at Jefferson Lab is indicated.

Gluonic Mesons in J/Psi Radiative Decay

The eta(1760) may be significantly produced in J/Psi radiative decay. We deduce from experimental data that its branching ratio to two gluons is bounded, 0.4 +- 0.3 < BR(eta(1760) -> gg) < 0.9 +- 0.3, consistent with gluonic admixture. Moreover, the expectation that there should be an isoscalar analogue of the gluonic (hybrid) meson candidate pi(1800) is argued to reinforce hybrid admixture in eta(1760). Two-gluon coupling of hybrids is estimated in a spectator model to be considerably larger than that of quarkonium. In addition, the two-photon coupling of eta(1760) is estimated to be 1.4 +- 0.7 keV.

Excited Charmonium Decays by Flux-Tube Breaking and the $ψ^{'}$ Anomaly at CDF

The hadronic decay of radially and orbitally excited charmonium above charm threshold by $^3 P_{0}$ pair creation and chromoelectric flux--tube breaking is discussed in an harmonic oscillator approximation. We find independent evidence from a study of widths for a 2S admixture in the predominantly 1D state $ψ(3770)$, and explore the possibility of metastable radially excited $2 \; ^{3}P_{0,1,2}$ states being a source of the anomalously large production of $ψ^{'}$ at the Tevatron. At least one of them is expected to be narrow as a consequence of the existence of nodes in the radial wave function.
