Weak solutions for mean field games with congestion

We study the short-time existence and uniqueness of solutions to a coupled system of partial differential equations arising in mean field game theory. It has the generic form $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{c} -\partial_t u - Δu + H(t,x,m,\nabla u) = f(t,x,m) \\ \partial_t m - Δm - \mathrm{div} \left(m\nabla_p H(t,x,m,\nabla u)\right) = 0 \end{array}\right. $$ plus initial-final and boundary conditions. The novelty of the problem is that the Hamiltonian $H(t,x,m,p)$ may take such forms as $m^{-α}|p|^r$ for some $α\geq 0$ and $r > 1$. Our main result is the existence of weak solutions for small times $T$ so long as $r$ is not too large, and uniqueness under additional constraints. The main ingredient in the proof is an a priori estimate on solutions to the Fokker-Planck equation. We also briefly consider existence and uniqueness of solutions to an optimal control problem related to mean field games.

Mean field games systems of first order

We consider a system of mean field games with local coupling in the deterministic limit. Under general structure conditions on the Hamiltonian and coupling, we prove existence and uniqueness of the weak solution, characterizing this solution as the minimizer of some optimal control of Hamilton-Jacobi and continuity equations. We also prove that this solution converges in the long time average to the solution of the associated ergodic problem.

Rotation Remainders

We study properties of an array of numbers, called "the triangle," in which each row is formed by rotating all the numbers in the previous row to the left by $m$ positions in cyclical fashion, then appending a number to the end of the row. We show that a number's position in the triangle is uniquely determined by the infinite sequence of column positions--called "rotation remainders"--which we track as the number repeatedly rotates back to the first $m$ columns. The rotation remainders can be viewed as the digits in a "base $m/(m+1)$" expansion in an "$m$-adic" topological ring of a number encoding a given position in the triangle. Properties of these expansions are used to prove interesting claims about the triangle, such as the aperiodicity of any sequence of rotation remainders.

Optimal control of first-order Hamilton-Jacobi equations with linearly bounded Hamiltonian

We consider the optimal control of solutions of first order Hamilton-Jacobi equations, where the Hamiltonian is convex with linear growth. This models the problem of steering the propagation of a front by constructing an obstacle. We prove existence of minimizers to this optimization problem as in a relaxed setting and characterize the minimizers as weak solutions to a mean field game type system of coupled partial differential equations. Furthermore, we prove existence and partial uniqueness of weak solutions to the PDE system. An interpretation in terms of mean field games is also discussed.
