First moments of the nucleon generalized parton distributions from lattice QCD

We report on our lattice calculations of the nucleon's generalized parton distributions (GPDs), concentrating on their first moments for the case of N_f=2. Due to recent progress on the numerical side we are able to present results for the generalized form factors at pion masses as low as 260 MeV. We perform a fit to one-loop covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with encouraging results.

Sivers and Boer-Mulders observables from lattice QCD

We present a first calculation of transverse momentum dependent nucleon observables in dynamical lattice QCD employing non-local operators with staple-shaped, "process-dependent" Wilson lines. The use of staple-shaped Wilson lines allows us to link lattice simulations to TMD effects determined from experiment, and in particular to access non-universal, naively time-reversal odd TMD observables. We present and discuss results for the generalized Sivers and Boer-Mulders transverse momentum shifts for the SIDIS and DY cases. The effect of staple-shaped Wilson lines on T-even observables is studied for the generalized tensor charge and a generalized transverse shift related to the worm gear function g_1T. We emphasize the dependence of these observables on the staple extent and the Collins-Soper evolution parameter. Our numerical calculations use an n_f = 2+1 mixed action scheme with domain wall valence fermions on an Asqtad sea and pion masses 369 MeV as well as 518 MeV.

Baryon Axial Charges and Momentum Fractions with N_f=2+1 Dynamical Fermions

We report on recent results of the QCDSF/UKQCD Collaboration on investigations of baryon structure using configurations generated with N_f=2+1 dynamical flavours of O(a) improved Wilson fermions. With the strange quark mass as an additional dynamical degree of freedom in our simulations we avoid the need for a partially quenched approximation when investigating the properties of particles containing a strange quark, e.g. the hyperons. In particular, we will focus on the nucleon and hyperon axial charges and quark momentum fractions.

Dirac and Pauli form factors from lattice QCD

We present a comprehensive analysis of the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon from a lattice simulation with two flavors of dynamical O(a)-improved Wilson fermions. A key feature of our calculation is that we make use of an extensive ensemble of lattice gauge field configurations with four different lattice spacings, multiple volumes, and pion masses down to m_π~ 180 MeV. We find that by employing Kelly-inspired parametrizations for the Q^2-dependence of the form factors, we are able to obtain stable fits over our complete ensemble. Dirac and Pauli radii and the anomalous magnetic moments of the nucleon are extracted and results at light quark masses provide evidence for chiral non-analytic behavior in these fundamental observables.

Hyperon Form Factors from N_f=2+1 QCD

We present results from the QCDSF/UKQCD collaboration for the electromagnetic and semi-leptonic form factors for the hyperons. The simulations are performed on our new ensembles generated with 2+1 flavours of dynamical O(a)-improved Wilson fermions. A unique feature of these configurations is that the quark masses are tuned so that the singlet quark mass is held fixed at its physical value. We use 5 such choices of the individual quark masses on 24^3x48 lattices with a lattice spacing of about 0.078 fm.

Nucleon form factors and structure functions

We give an update on our ongoing efforts to compute the nucleon's form factors and moments of structure functions using Nf=2 flavours of non-perturbatively improved Clover fermions. We focus on new results obtained on gauge configurations where the pseudo-scalar meson mass is in the range of 170-270 MeV. We will compare our results with various estimates obtained from chiral effective theories since we have some overlap with the quark mass region where results from such theories are believed to be applicable.

Spin structure of the nucleon: QCD evolution, lattice results and models

The question how the spin of the nucleon is distributed among its quark and gluon constituents is still a subject of intense investigations. Lattice QCD has progressed to provide information about spin fractions and orbital angular momentum contributions for up- and down-quarks in the proton, at a typical scale μ^2~4 GeV^2. On the other hand, chiral quark models have traditionally been used for orientation at low momentum scales. In the comparison of such model calculations with experiment or lattice QCD, fixing the model scale and the treatment of scale evolution are essential. In this paper, we present a refined model calculation and a QCD evolution of lattice results up to next-to-next-to-leading order. We compare this approach with the Myhrer-Thomas scenario for resolving the proton spin puzzle.

Hadron structure from lattice quantum chromodynamics

This is a review of hadron structure physics from lattice QCD. Throughout this report, we place emphasis on the contribution of lattice results to our understanding of a number of fundamental physics questions related to, e.g., the origin and distribution of the charge, magnetization, momentum and spin of hadrons. Following an introduction to some of the most important hadron structure observables, we summarize the methods and techniques employed for their calculation in lattice QCD. We briefly discuss the status of relevant chiral perturbation theory calculations needed for controlled extrapolations of the lattice results to the physical point. In the main part of this report, we give an overview of lattice calculations on hadron form factors, moments of (generalized) parton distributions, moments of hadron distribution amplitudes, and other important hadron structure observables. Whenever applicable, we compare with results from experiment and phenomenology, taking into account systematic uncertainties in the lattice computations. Finally, we discuss promising results based on new approaches, ideas and techniques, and close with remarks on future perspectives of the field.

Intrinsic quark transverse momentum in the nucleon from lattice QCD

A better understanding of transverse momentum (k_T-) dependent quark distributions in a hadron is needed to interpret several experimentally observed large angular asymmetries and to clarify the fundamental role of gauge links in non-abelian gauge theories. Based on manifestly non-local gauge invariant quark operators we introduce process-independent k_T-distributions and study their properties in lattice QCD. We find that the longitudinal and transverse momentum dependence approximately factorizes, in contrast to the behavior of generalized parton distributions. The resulting quark k_T-probability densities for the nucleon show characteristic dipole deformations due to correlations between intrinsic k_T and the quark or nucleon spin. Our lattice calculations are based on N_f=2+1 mixed action propagators of the LHP collaboration.

Lattice Investigations of Nucleon Structure at Light Quark Masses

Lattice simulations of hadronic structure are now reaching a level where they are able to not only complement, but also provide guidance to current and forthcoming experimental programmes at, e.g. Jefferson Lab, COMPASS/CERN and FAIR/GSI. By considering new simulations at low quark masses and on large volumes, we review the recent progress that has been made in this exciting area by the QCDSF/UKQCD collaboration. In particular, results obtained close to the physical point for several quantities, including electromagnetic form factors and moments of ordinary parton distribution functions, show some indication of approaching their phenomenological values.

Nucleon Generalized Parton Distributions from Full Lattice QCD

We present a comprehensive study of the lowest moments of nucleon generalized parton distributions in N_f=2+1 lattice QCD using domain wall valence quarks and improved staggered sea quarks. Our investigation includes helicity dependent and independent generalized parton distributions for pion masses as low as 350 MeV and volumes as large as (3.5 fm)^3, for a lattice spacing of 0.124 fm. We use perturbative renormalization at one-loop level with an improvement based on the non-perturbative renormalization factor for the axial vector current, and only connected diagrams are included in the isosinglet channel.

Generalized parton distributions from domain wall valence quarks and staggered sea quarks

Moments of the generalized parton distributions of the nucleon, calculated with a mixed action of domain wall valence quarks and asqtad staggered sea quarks, are presented for pion masses extending down to 359 MeV. Results for the moments of the unpolarized, helicity, and transversity distributions are given and compared to the available experimental measurements. Additionally, a selection of the generalized form factors are shown and the implications for the spin decomposition and transverse structure of the nucleon are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding systematic errors in the lattice calculation and exploring a variety of chiral extrapolations.

Hunting the QCD-Odderon in hard diffractive electroproduction of two pions

Charge asymmetries in diffractive electroproduction of two mesons are proportional to the interference of Pomeron and Odderon exchange amplitudes. We calculate in the framework of QCD and in the Born approximation a forward-backward charge asymmetry which turns out to be sizable in a kinematical domain accessible to HERA experiments. We predict a distinctive dependence of this asymmetry on the invariant mass of the two pions. Testing this prediction is a crucial step in the discovery of the QCD-Odderon.
