Electrowetting diminishes contact line friction in molecular wetting

We use large-scale molecular dynamics to study dynamics at the three-phase contact line in electrowetting of water and electrolytes on no-slip substrates. Under the applied electrostatic potential the line friction at the contact line is diminished. The effect is consistent for droplets of different sizes as well as for both pure water and electrolyte solution droplets. We analyze the electric field at the contact line to show how it assists ions and dipolar molecules to advance the contact line. Without an electric field, the interaction between a substrate and a liquid has a very short range, mostly affecting the bottom, immobilized layer of liquid molecules which leads to high friction since mobile molecules are not pulled towards the surface. In electrowetting, the electric field attracts charged and polar molecules over a longer range which diminishes the friction.

On the order map for hypersurface coamoebas

Given a hypersurface coamoeba of a Laurent polynomial f, it is an open problem to describe the structure of its set of connected complement components. In this paper we approach this problem by introducing the lopsided coamoeba. We show that the closed lopsided coamoeba comes naturally equipped with an order map, i.e. a map v from its set of connected complement components to a translated lattice inside the zonotope of a Gale dual of the point configuration supp(f). Under a natural assumption, the map v is a bijection. Finally we use this map to obtain new results concerning coamoebas of polynomials of small codimension.

Pair annihilation in laser pulses: optical vs. XFEL regimes

We discuss the theory and phenomenology of pair annihilation, within an ultra-short laser pulse, to a single photon. The signature of this process is the uni-directional emission of single photons with a fixed energy. We show that the cross section is significantly larger than for two-photon pair annihilation in vacuum, with XFEL parameters admitting a much clearer signal than optical beams.
