Propagation reversal for bistable differential equations on trees

We study traveling wave solutions to bistable differential equations on infinite kk-ary trees. These graphs generalize the notion of classical square infinite lattices and our results complement those for bistable lattice equations on Z\mathbb{Z}. Using comparison principles and explicit lower and upper solutions, we show that wave-solutions are pinned for small diffusion parameters. Upon increasing the diffusion, the wave starts to travel with non-zero speed, in a direction that depends on the detuning parameter. However, once the diffusion is sufficiently strong, the wave propagates in a single direction up the tree irrespective of the detuning parameter. In particular, our results imply that changes to the diffusion parameter can lead to a reversal of the propagation direction.

Evolutionary Games on Graphs and Discrete Dynamical Systems

Evolutionary games on graphs play an important role in the study of evolution of cooperation in applied biology. Using rigorous mathematical concepts from a dynamical systems and graph theoretical point of view, we formalize the notions of attractor, update rules and update orders. We prove results on attractors for different utility functions and update orders. For complete graphs we characterize attractors for synchronous and sequential update rules. In other cases (for kk-regular graphs or for different update orders) we provide sufficient conditions for attractivity of full cooperation and full defection. We construct examples to show that these conditions are not necessary. Finally, by formulating a list of open questions we emphasize the advantages of our rigorous approach.

Transport Equation on Semidiscrete Domains and Poisson-Bernoulli Processes

In this paper we consider a scalar transport equation with constant coefficients on domains with discrete space and continuous, discrete or general time. We show that on all these underlying domains solutions of the transport equation can conserve sign and integrals both in time and space. Detailed analysis reveals that, under some initial conditions, the solutions correspond to counting stochastic processes and related probability distributions. Consequently, the transport equation could generate various modifications of these processes and distributions and provide some insights into corresponding convergence questions. Possible applications are suggested and discussed.
