Towards a microscopic description of nucleus-nucleus collisions

We present the first results of a comprehensive microscopic approach to describe nucleus-nucleus elastic collisions by means of an optical potential derived at first order in multiple-scattering theory and computed by folding the projectile and target nuclear densities with the nucleon-nucleon $t$ matrix, which describes the interaction between each nucleon of the projectile and each nucleon of the target. Chiral interactions are consistently used in the calculation of the $t$ matrix and of the nonlocal nuclear densities, which are computed within the ab initio no-core shell model. Cross sections calculated for $α$ collisions on $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O at projectile energies in the range 100-300 MeV are presented and compared with available data. For momentum transfer $q$ up to about $1.0$ fm$^{-1}$ our results are in good agreement with the experimental data, whereas for higher momenta a reduction of the imaginary contributions is needed.

Ab initio prediction of the $^4{\rm He}(d,γ)\,^6\rm Li$ big bang radiative capture

The rate at which helium ($^4$He) and deuterium ($d$) fuse together to produce lithium-6 ($^6$Li) and a $γ$ ray, $^4$He$(d,γ)^6$Li, is a critical puzzle piece in resolving the roughly three orders of magnitude discrepancy between big bang predictions and astronomical observations for the primordial abundance of $^6$Li. The accurate determination of this radiative capture rate requires the quantitative and predictive description of the fusion probability across the big bang energy window ($30$ keV $\lesssim E\lesssim 400$ keV), where measurements are hindered by low counting rates. We present first-principles (or, ab initio) predictions of the $^4$He$(d,γ)^6$Li astrophysical S-factor using validated nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon interactions derived within the framework of chiral effective field theory. By employing the ab initio no-core shell model with continuum to describe $^4{\rm He}$-$d$ scattering dynamics and bound $^6\rm Li$ product on an equal footing, we accurately and consistently determine the contributions of the main electromagnetic transitions driving the radiative capture process. Our results reveal an enhancement of the capture probability below 100 keV owing to previously neglected magnetic dipole (M1) transitions and reduce by an average factor of 7 the uncertainty of the thermonuclear capture rate between $0.002$ and $2$ GK.

Elastic proton scattering off non-zero spin nuclei

In recent years, we constructed a microscopic optical potential (OP) for elastic nucleon-nucleus ($NA$) scattering using modern approaches based on chiral theories for the nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) interaction. The OP was derived at first order of the spectator expansion in Watson multiple scattering theory and its final expression was a folding integral between the $NN$ $t$ matrix and the nuclear density of the target. Two- and three-body forces are consistently included both in the target and in the projectile description. The purpose of this work is to apply our microscopic OP to nuclei characterized by a ground state of spin-parity quantum numbers $J^π\ne 0^+$. We extended our formalism to include the spin of the target nucleus. The full amplitudes of the $NN$ reaction matrix are retained in the calculations starting from two- and three-body chiral forces. We show a remarkable agreement with experimental data for the available observables and, simultaneously, provide reliable estimates for the theoretical uncertainties. This work paves the way toward a full microscopic approach to inelastic $NA$ scattering, showing that the derivation of optical potentials between states with $J^π\ne 0^+$ is completely under control.

Nuclear ab initio calculations of 6He $β$-decay for beyond the Standard Model studies

Precision measurements of $β$-decay observables offer the possibility to search for deviations from the Standard Model. A possible discovery of such deviations requires accompanying first-principles calculations. Here we compute the nuclear structure corrections for the $β$-decay of $^6$He which is of central interest in several experimental efforts. We employ the impulse approximation together with wave functions calculated using the ab initio no-core shell model with potentials based on chiral effective field theory. We use these state-of-the-art calculations to give a novel and comprehensive analysis of theoretical uncertainties. We find that nuclear corrections, which we compute within the sensitivity of future experiments, create significant deviation from the naive Gamow-Teller predictions, making their accurate assessment essential in searches for physics beyond the Standard Model.

Elastic Antiproton-Nucleus Scattering from Chiral Forces

Elastic scattering of antiprotons off $^4$He, $^{12}$C, and $^{16,18}$O is described for the first time with a totally microscopic approach based on the calculation of an optical potential (OP) describing the antiproton-target interaction. The OP is derived using the recent antiproton-nucleon ($\bar{p}N$) chiral interaction to calculate the $\bar{p}N$ $t$ matrix, while the target densities are computed with the ab initio no-core shell model using chiral interactions as well. Our results are in a good agreement with the existing experimental data and the results computed at different chiral orders of the $\bar{p}N$ interaction display the convergence pattern expected from the theory.

${^3{\rm He}}(α,γ){^7{\rm Be}}$ and ${^3{\rm H}}(α,γ){^7{\rm Li}}$ astrophysical $S$ factors from the no-core shell model with continuum

The ${^3{\rm He}}(α,γ){^7{\rm Be}}$ and ${^3{\rm H}}(α,γ){^7{\rm Li}}$ astrophysical $S$ factors are calculated within the no-core shell model with continuum using a renormalized chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction. The ${^3{\rm He}}(α,γ){^7{\rm Be}}$ astrophysical $S$ factors agree reasonably well with the experimental data while the ${^3{\rm H}}(α,γ){^7{\rm Li}}$ ones are overestimated. The seven-nucleon bound and resonance states and the $α+{^3{\rm He}}/{^3{\rm H}}$ elastic scattering are also studied and compared with experiment. The low-lying resonance properties are rather well reproduced by our approach. At low energies, the $s$-wave phase shift, which is non-resonant, is overestimated.

Can Ab Initio Theory Explain the Phenomenon of Parity Inversion in ${}^{11}$Be?

The weakly bound exotic ${}^{11}$Be nucleus, famous for its ground-state parity inversion and distinct n+ ${}^{10}$Be halo structure, is investigated from first principles using chiral two- and three-nucleon forces. An explicit treatment of continuum effects is found to be indispensable. We study the sensitivity of the ${}^{11}$Be spectrum to the details of the three-nucleon force and demonstrate that only certain chiral interactions are capable of reproducing the parity inversion. With such interactions, the extremely large E1 transition between the bound states is reproduced. We compare our photodisintegration calculations to conflicting experimental data and predict a distinct dip around the $3/2^-_1$ resonance energy. Finally, we predict low-lying $3/2^+$ and $9/2^+$ resonances that are not or not sufficiently measured in experiments.

Deuteron-induced nucleon transfer reactions within an ab initio framework: First application to p-shell nuclei

Background: Low-energy transfer reactions in which a proton is stripped from a deuteron projectile and dropped into a target play a crucial role in the formation of nuclei in both primordial and stellar nucleosynthesis, as well as in the study of exotic nuclei using radioactive beam facilities and inverse kinematics. Ab initio approaches have been successfully applied to describe the $^3$H$(d,n)^4$He and $^3$He$(d,p)^4$He fusion processes. Purpose: An ab initio treatment of transfer reactions would also be desirable for heavier targets. In this work, we extend the ab initio description of $(d,p)$ reactions to processes with light $p$-shell nuclei. As a first application, we study the elastic scattering of deuterium on $^7$Li and the ${}^{7}$Li($d$,$p$)${}^{8}$Li transfer reaction based on a two-body Hamiltonian. Methods: We use the no-core shell model to compute the wave functions of the nuclei involved in the reaction, and describe the dynamics between targets and projectiles with the help of microscopic-cluster states in the spirit of the resonating group method. Results: The shape of the excitation functions for deuteron impinging on ${}^{7}$Li are qualitatively reproduced up to the deuteron breakup energy. The interplay between $d$-$^7$Li and $p$-$^8$Li particle-decay channels determines some features of the ${}^{9}$Be spectrum above the $d$+${}^{7}$Li threshold. Our prediction for the parity of the 17.298 MeV resonance is at odds with the experimental assignment Conclusions: Deuteron stripping reactions with $p$-shell targets can now be computed ab initio, but calculations are very demanding. A quantitative description of the ${}^{7}$Li($d$,$p$)${}^{8}$Li reaction will require further work to include the effect of three-nucleon forces and additional decay channels, and improve the convergence rate of our calculations.

Microscopic Study of $α+N$ Bremsstrahlung from Effective and Realistic Multi-nucleon Interactions

Based on an effective nucleon-nucleon interaction, a microscopic cluster model of the nucleus-nucleus bremsstrahlung, including implicitly a part of the effects of meson-exchange currents via an extension of the Siegert theorem is applied to the $α+p$ and $α+n$ systems. The contributions of the $E1$ and $E2$ transitions to the bremsstrahlung cross sections are evaluated and their relative importance for the mirror systems $α+p$ and $α+n$ is compared. Another approach based on realistic two- and three-nucleon interactions and the No-Core Shell Model/Resonating-Group Method is also investigated. Some preliminary results for the $α+p$ bremsstrahlung are displayed.

$^4{\rm He}$+$n$+$n$ continuum within an ab initio framework

The low-lying continuum spectrum of the $^6{\rm He}$ nucleus is investigated for the first time within an ab initio framework that encompasses the $^4{\rm He}$+$n$+$n$ three-cluster dynamics characterizing its lowest decay channel. This is achieved through an extension of the no-core-shell model combined with the resonating-group method, in which energy-independent non-local interactions among three nuclear fragments can be calculated microscopically starting from realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions and consistent ab initio many-body wave functions of the clusters. The three-cluster Schrödinger equation is solved with three-body scattering boundary conditions by means of the hyperspherical-harmonic method on a Lagrange mesh. Using a soft similarity-renormalization-group evolved chiral nucleon-nucleon potential, we find the known $J^π= 2^+$ resonance as well as a result consistent with a new low-lying second $2^+$ resonance recently observed at GANIL at $2.6$ MeV above the $^6$He ground state. We also find resonances in the $2^-$, $1^+$ and $0^-$ channels, while no low-lying resonances are present in the $0^+$ and $1^-$ channels.

A Predictive Theory for Elastic Scattering and Recoil of Protons from $^4$He

Low-energy cross sections for elastic scattering and recoil of protons from $^4$He nuclei (also known as $α$ particles) are calculated directly by solving the Schrödinger equation for five nucleons interacting through accurate two- and three-nucleon forces derived within the framework of chiral effective field theory. Precise knowledge of these processes at various proton backscattering/recoil angles and energies is needed for the ion-beam analysis of numerous materials, from the surface layers of solids, to thin films, to fusion-reactor materials. Indeed, the same elastic scattering process, in two different kinematic configurations, can be used to probe concentrations and depth profiles of either hydrogen or helium. We compare our results to available experimental data and show that direct calculations with modern nuclear potentials can help to resolve remaining inconsistencies among different data sets and can be used to predict these cross sections when measurements are not available.

Ab Initio Description of p-Shell Hypernuclei

We present the first ab initio calculations for p-shell single-Lambda hypernuclei. For the solution of the many-baryon problem, we develop two variants of the no-core shell model with explicit $Λ$ and $Σ^+$, $Σ^0$, $Σ^-$ hyperons including $Λ$-$Σ$ conversion, optionally supplemented by a similarity renormalization group transformation to accelerate model-space convergence. In addition to state-of-the-art chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions, we use leading-order chiral hyperon-nucleon interactions and a recent meson-exchange hyperon-nucleon interaction. We validate the approach for s-shell hypernuclei and apply it to p-shell hypernuclei, in particular to $^7_Λ$Li, $^9_Λ$Be and $^{13}_Λ$C. We show that the chiral hyperon-nucleon interactions provide ground-state and excitation energies that agree with experiment within the cutoff dependence. At the same time we demonstrate that hypernuclear spectroscopy provides tight constraints on the hyperon-nucleon interactions and we discuss the impact of induced hyperon-nucleon-nucleon interactions.

Progress on Light-Ion Fusion Reactions with Three-Nucleon Forces

The description of structural and dynamical properties of nuclei starting from the fundamental interaction between nucleons has been a long-standing goal in nuclear physics. The ab initio No-Core Shell Model combined with the Resonating-Group Method (NCSM/RGM) is capable of addressing both structural and reaction properties of light-nuclei. While promising results have already been achieved starting from a two-body Hamiltonian, a truly realistic prediction of nuclear observables requires the treatment of the three-nucleon interaction. Using similarity-renormalization-group evolved two- and three-nucleon interactions, we will present recent applications to n-4He scattering process when accounting for the chiral two- plus three-nucleon interaction versus the chiral two-nucleon interaction. We compare our results to phase shifts obtained from R-matrix analysis of data up to 16 MeV neutron energy, below the d-3H threshold.

Unified description of $^6$Li structure and deuterium-$^4$He dynamics with chiral two- and three-nucleon forces

Prototype for the study of weakly bound projectiles colliding on stable targets, the scattering of deuterium ($d$) on $^4$He ($α$) is an important milestone in the search for a fundamental understanding of low-energy reactions. At the same time, it is also important for its role in the Big-bang nucleosynthesis of $^6$Li and applications in the characterization of deuterium impurities in materials. We present the first unified {\em ab initio} study of the $^6$Li ground state and $d$-$^4$He elastic scattering using two- and three-nucleon forces derived within the framework of chiral effective field theory. The six-nucleon bound-state and scattering observables are calculated by means of the no-core shell model with continuum. %and are compared to available experimental data. We analyze the influence of the dynamic polarization of the deuterium and of the chiral three-nucleon force, and examine the role of the continuum degrees of freedom in shaping the low-lying spectrum of $^6$Li. We find that the adopted Hamiltonian correctly predicts the binding energy of $^6$Li, yielding an asymptotic $D$- to $S$-state ratio of the $^6$Li wave function in $d+α$ configuration of $-0.027$ in agreement with the value determined from a phase shift analysis of $^6$Li+$^4$He elastic scattering, but overestimates the excitation energy of the first $3^+$ state by $350$ keV. The bulk of the computed differential cross section is in good agreement with data.

Ab initio many-body calculations of nucleon-4He scattering with three-nucleon forces

We extend the ab initio no-core shell model/resonating-group method to include three-nucleon (3N) interactions for the description of nucleon-nucleus collisions. We outline the formalism, give algebraic expressions for the 3N-force integration kernels, and discuss computational aspects of two alternative implementations. The extended theoretical framework is then applied to nucleon-4He scattering using similarity-renormalization-group (SRG) evolved nucleon-nucleon plus three-nucleon potentials derived from chiral effective field theory. We analyze the convergence properties of the calculated phase shifts and explore their dependence upon the SRG evolution parameter. We include up to six excited states of the 4He target and find significant effects from the inclusion of the chiral 3N force, e.g., it enhances the spin-orbit splitting between the 3/2- and 1/2- resonances and leads to an improved agreement with the phase shifts obtained from an accurate R-matrix analysis of the five-nucleon experimental data. We find remarkably good agreement with measured differential cross sections at various energies, while analyzing powers manifest larger deviations from experiment for certain energies and angles.

Extension of coupled-cluster theory with a non-iterative treatment of connected triply excited clusters to three-body Hamiltonians

We generalize the coupled-cluster (CC) approach with singles, doubles, and the non-iterative treatment of triples termed $Λ$CCSD(T) to Hamiltonians containing three-body interactions. The resulting method and the underlying CC approach with singles and doubles only (CCSD) are applied to the medium-mass closed-shell nuclei O16, O24, and Ca40. By comparing the results of CCSD and $Λ$CCSD(T) calculations with explicit treatment of three-nucleon interactions to those obtained using an approximate treatment in which they are included effectively via the zero-, one-, and two-body components of the Hamiltonian in normal-ordered form, we quantify the contributions of the residual three-body interactions neglected in the approximate treatment. We find these residual normal-ordered three-body contributions negligible for the $Λ$CCSD(T) method, although they can become significant in the lower-level CCSD approach, particularly when the nucleon-nucleon interactions are soft.

Isotopic chains around oxygen from evolved chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions

We extend the formalism of self-consistent Green's function theory to include three-body interactions and apply it to isotopic chains around oxygen for the first time. The third-order algebraic diagrammatic construction [ADC(3)] equations for two-body Hamiltonians can be exploited upon defining system-dependent one- and two-body interactions coming from the three-body force, and correspondingly dropping interaction reducible diagrams. This goes beyond the standard normal ordering truncations recently used in ab-inito studies. The Koltun sum rule for the total binding energy acquires a correction due to the added three-body interaction. This formalism is then applied to study chiral two-nucleon (2N) and three-nucleon forces (3NF) evolved to low momentum cutoffs. We find that these interactions reproduce the binding energies of nitrogen, oxygen and fluorine isotopes to great accuracy, providing clear indication of the predictive power of this approach. All three neutron driplines are correctly predicted when full 3NF are included. The formalism introduced also allows to calculate form factors for nucleon transfer on doubly magic systems.

Systematics of 2+ states in C isotopes from the ab initio no-core shell model

We study low-lying states of even carbon isotopes in the range A = 10 - 20 within the large- scale no-core shell model (NCSM). Using several accurate nucleon-nucleon (NN) as well as NN plus three-nucleon (NNN) interactions, we calculate excitation energies of the lowest 2+ state, the electromagnetic B(E2; 2+1 -> 0+1) transition rates, the 2+1 quadrupole moments as well as se- lected electromagnetic transitions among other states. Recent experimental campaigns to measure 2+-state lifetimes indicate an interesting evolution of nuclear structure that pose a challenge to reproduce theoretically from first principles. Our calculations do not include any effective charges or other fitting parameters. However, calculated results extrapolated to infinite model spaces are also presented. The model-dependence of those results is discussed. Overall, we find a good agree- ment with the experimentally observed trends, although our extrapolated B(E2; 2+1 -> 0+1) value for 16C is lower compared to the most recent measurements. Relative transition strengths from higher excited states are investigated and the influence of NNN forces is discussed. In particular for 16C we find a remarkable sensitivity of the transition rates from higher excited states to the details of the nuclear interactions.

Ab Initio Calculations of Medium-Mass Nuclei with Explicit Chiral 3N Interactions

We present the first ab initio coupled-cluster calculations of medium-mass nuclei with explicit chiral three-nucleon (3N) interactions. Using a spherical formulation of coupled cluster with singles and doubles excitations including explicit 3N contributions, we study ground states of 16,24-O, 40,48-Ca and 56-Ni. We employ chiral NN plus 3N interactions softened through a similarity renormalization group (SRG) transformation at the three-body level. We investigate the impact of all truncations and quantify the resulting uncertainties---this includes the contributions from triples excitations, the truncation of the set of three-body matrix elements, and the omission of SRG-induced four-body interactions. Furthermore, we assess the quality of a normal-ordering approximation of the 3N interaction beyond light nuclei. Our study points towards the predictive power of chiral Hamiltonians in the medium-mass regime.

Similarity-Transformed Chiral NN+3N Interactions for the Ab Initio Description of 12-C and 16-O

We present first ab initio no-core shell model (NCSM) calculations using similarity renormalization group (SRG) transformed chiral two-nucleon (NN) plus three-nucleon (3N) interactions for nuclei throughout the p-shell, particularly 12-C and 16-O. By introducing an adaptive importance truncation for the NCSM model space and an efficient JT-coupling scheme for the 3N matrix elements, we are able to surpass previous NCSM studies including 3N interactions regarding, both, particle number and model-space size. We present ground and excited states in 12-C and 16-O for model spaces up to N_max=12 including full 3N interactions, which is sufficient to obtain converged results for soft SRG-transformed interactions. We analyze the contributions of induced and initial 3N interactions and probe induced 4N terms through the sensitivity of the energies on the SRG flow parameter. Unlike for light p-shell nuclei, SRG-induced 4N contributions originating from the long-range two-pion terms of the chiral 3N interaction are sizable in 12-C and 16-O.

Scattering of light nuclei

The exact treatment of nuclei starting from the constituent nucleons and the fundamental interactions among them has been a long-standing goal in nuclear physics. Above all nuclear scattering and reactions, which require the solution of the many-body quantum-mechanical problem in the continuum, represent an extraordinary theoretical as well as computational challenge for {\em ab initio} approaches. We present a new {\em ab initio} many-body approach which derives from the combination of the {\em ab initio} no-core shell model with the resonating-group method [4]. By complementing a microscopic cluster technique with the use of realistic interactions, and a microscopic and consistent description of the nucleon clusters, this approach is capable of describing simultaneously both bound and scattering states in light nuclei. We will discuss applications to neutron and proton scattering on $s$- and light $p$-shell nuclei using realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials, and outline the progress toward the treatment of more complex reactions.
