Strategic Customer Behavior in an $M/M/1$ Feedback Queue

We investigate the behavior of equilibria in an $M/M/1$ feedback queue where price and time sensitive customers are homogeneous with respect to service valuation and cost per unit time of waiting. Upon arrival, customers can observe the number of customers in the system and then decide to join or to balk. Customers are served in order of arrival. After being served, each customer either successfully completes the service and departs the system with probability $q$, or the service fails and the customer immediately joins the end of the queue to wait to be served again until she successfully completes it. We analyse this decision problem as a noncooperative game among the customers. We show that there exists a unique symmetric Nash equilibrium threshold strategy. We then prove that the symmetric Nash equilibrium threshold strategy is evolutionarily stable. Moreover, if we relax the strategy restrictions by allowing customers to renege, in the new Nash equilibrium, customers have a greater incentive to join. However, this does not necessarily increase the equilibrium expected payoff, and for some parameter values, it decreases it.

Response of an Unruh-DeWitt detector near an extremal black hole

We consider the response of an Unruh-DeWitt detector near an extremal charged black hole, modeling the near-horizon region of this extremal spacetime by the Bertotti-Robinson spacetime. The advantage of employing the Bertotti-Robinson limit is that the two-point functions for a massless scalar field are obtainable in closed form for the field in a number of quantum states of interest. We consider the detector coupled to a massless field in both the Boulware vacuum state and arbitrary thermal states, including the Hartle-Hawking state, and analyse the detector's response for a broad range of trajectories. Particular attention is paid to the thermalization of the detector, the anti-Unruh and anti-Hawking effect.

Vacuum polarization on topological black holes with Robin boundary conditions

We compute the renormalized vacuum polarization for a massless, conformally coupled scalar field on asymptotically anti-de Sitter black hole backgrounds. Mixed (Robin) boundary conditions are applied on the spacetime boundary. We consider black holes with nonspherical event horizon topology as well as spherical event horizons. The quantum scalar field is in the Hartle-Hawking state, and we employ Euclidean methods to calculate the renormalized expectation values. Far from the black hole, we find that the vacuum polarization approaches a finite limit, which is the same for all boundary conditions except Dirichlet boundary conditions.

A Survey of Parameter and State Estimation in Queues

We present a broad literature survey of parameter and state estimation for queueing systems. Our approach is based on various inference activities, queueing models, observations schemes, and statistical methods. We categorize these into branches of research that we call estimation paradigms. These include: the classical sampling approach, inverse problems, inference for non-interacting systems, inference with discrete sampling, inference with queueing fundamentals, queue inference engine problems, Bayesian approaches, online prediction, implicit models, and control, design, and uncertainty quantification. For each of these estimation paradigms, we outline the principles and ideas, while surveying key references. We also present various simple numerical experiments. In addition to some key references mentioned here, a periodically-updated comprehensive list of references dealing with parameter and state estimation of queues will be kept in an accompanying annotated bibliography.

Semi-Classical Backreaction on Asymptotically Anti-de Sitter Black Holes

We consider a quantum scalar field on the classical background of an asymptotically anti-de Sitter black hole and the backreaction the field's stress-energy tensor induces on the black hole geometry. The backreaction is computed by solving the reduced-order semi-classical Einstein field equations sourced by simple analytical approximations for the renormalized expectation value of the scalar field stress-energy tensor. When the field is massless and conformally coupled, we adopt Page's approximation to the renormalised stress energy tensor while for massive fields, we adopt a modified version of the DeWitt-Schwinger approximation. The latter approximation must be modified so that it possesses the correct renormalization freedom required to ensure the semi-classical equations are consistent. Equipped with these approximations, the reduced-order field equations are easily integrated and the first-order (in $\hbar$) corrections to the metric are obtained. We also compute the corrections to the black hole event horizon, surface gravity and minimum temperature as well as corrections to the photon sphere and quadratic curvature invariants. We pay particular attention to the temperature profiles of the semi-classical black holes compared with their classical counterparts, pointing out some interesting qualitative features produced by the backreaction. These results ought to provide reasonable approximations to the first-order (one-loop) quantum backreaction on the geometry of asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes when the exact numerical stress-energy tensor sources the semi-classical equations.

Regular Quantum States on the Cauchy Horizon of a Charged Black Hole

We consider the quantum stress-energy tensor of a massless scalar field near the Cauchy horizon interior to the Reissner-Nordström black hole spacetime. We construct the quantum state by considering the two-point function on a negative definite metric obtained by a double analytic continuation from the Lorentzian manifold, complexifying both the $t$ and polar coordinates. We enforce periodicity in the Euclideanized $t$ coordinate with periodicity equal to the reciprocal of the temperature of the Cauchy horizon, a necessary condition for avoiding a conical singularity at the inner horizon. We show by explicit construction that our quantum state satisfies the Hadamard condition on the Cauchy horizon. The expectation value of the quantum stress-energy tensor on the Cauchy horizon is given in closed form.

A Mode-Sum Prescription for Vacuum Polarization in Odd Dimensions

We present a new mode-sum regularization prescription for computing the vacuum polarization of a scalar field in static spherically-symmetric black hole spacetimes in odd dimensions. This is the first general and systematic approach to regularized vacuum polarization in higher dimensions. Remarkably, the regularization parameters can be computed in closed form in arbitrary dimensions and for arbitrary metric function $f(r)$. In fact, we show that in spite of the increasing severity and number of the divergences to be regularized, the method presented is mostly agnostic to the number of dimensions. Finally, as an explicit example of our method, we show plots for vacuum polarization in the Schwarzschild-Tangherlini spacetime for odd $d=5,...,11$.

Counting distinct dimer hex tilings

The combinatorics of tilings of a hexagon of integer side-length $n$ by 120 degree - 60 degree diamonds of side-length 1 has a long history, both directly (as a problem of interest in thermodynamic models) and indirectly (through the equivalence to plane partitions). Formulae as products of factorials have been conjectured and, one by one, proven for the number of such tilings under each of the symmetries of the hexagon. However, when this note was written the entry for the number of distinct such tilings in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS) consisted of little more than a table for $0 \le n \le 4$ and a brief discussion of those values. The aim of this note is to pull together the relevant facts.

Self-forces on static bodies in arbitrary dimensions

We derive exact expressions for the scalar and electromagnetic self-forces and self-torques acting on arbitrary static extended bodies in arbitrary static spacetimes with any number of dimensions. Non-perturbatively, our results are identical in all dimensions. Meaningful point particle limits are quite different in different dimensions, however. These limits are defined and evaluated, resulting in simple "regularization algorithms" which can be used in concrete calculations. In these limits, self-interaction is shown to be progressively less important in higher numbers of dimensions; it generically competes in magnitude with increasingly high-order extended-body effects. Conversely, we show that self-interaction effects can be relatively large in $1+1$ and $2+1$ dimensions. Our motivations for this work are twofold: First, no previous derivation of the self-force has been provided in arbitrary dimensions, and heuristic arguments presented by different authors have resulted in conflicting conclusions. Second, the static self-force problem in arbitrary dimensions provides a valuable testbed with which to continue the development of general, non-perturbative methods in the theory of motion. Several new insights are obtained in this direction, including a significantly improved understanding of the renormalization process. We also show that there is considerable freedom to use different "effective fields" in the laws of motion---a freedom which can be exploited to optimally simplify specific problems. Different choices give rise to different inertias, gravitational forces, and electromagnetic or scalar self-forces, but there is a sense in which none of these quantities are individually accessible to experiment. Certain combinations are observable, however, and these remain invariant under all possible field redefinitions.

Static Self-Forces in a Five-Dimensional Black Hole Spacetime

We obtain the electric field and scalar field for a static point charge in closed form in the 5D Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black hole spacetime. We then compute the static self-force in each of these cases by assuming that the appropriate singular field is a 4D Hadamard Green's function on the constant time Riemannian slice. It is well known that the Hadamard Green's function involves an arbitrary regular biscalar $W_{0}(x,x')$, whose coincidence limit $w(x)$ appears in the expression for the self-force. We develop an axiomatic approach to reduce this arbitrary function to a single arbitrary dimensionless coefficient. We show that in the context of this approach to regularization, the self-force does not depend on any undetermined length-scale and need not depend on the internal structure of the charge.

The Second Order Terms of the Variance Curves for Some Queueing Output Processes

We consider queueing output processes of some elementary queueing models such as the M/M/1/K queue and the M/G/1 queue. An important performance measure for these counting processes is their variance curve, indicating the variance of the number of served customers over a time interval. Recent work has revealed some non-trivial properties dealing with the asymptotic rate at which the variance curve grows. In this paper we add to the results by finding explicit expressions for the second order approximation of the variance curve, namely the y-intercept of the linear asymptote. For M/M/1/K queues our results are based on the Drazin inverse of the generator. It turns out that by viewing output processes as MAPs (Markovian Arrival Processes) and considering the Drazin inverse, one can obtain explicit expressions for the y-intercept, together with some further insight regarding the BRAVO effect (Balancing Reduces Asymptotic Variance of Outputs). For M/G/1 queues our results are based on a classic transform of D.J. Daley. In this case we represent the y-intercept of the variance curve in terms of the first three moments of the service time distribution. A further performance measure that we are able to calculate for both models, is the asymptotic covariance between the queue length and the number of arrivals or departures. In addition we shed light on a classic conjecture of Daley, dealing with characterization of stationary M/M/1 queues within the class of stationary M/G/1 queues, based on the variance curve.

Quantum field theory on the Bertotti-Robinson space-time

We consider the problem of quantum field theory on the Bertotti-Robinson space-time, which arises naturally as the near horizon geometry of an extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole but can also arise in certain near-horizon limits of non-extremal Reissner Nordstrom space-time. The various vacuum states have been considered in the context of $AdS_{2}$ black holes by Spradlin and Strominger who showed that the Poincare vacuum, the Global vacuum and the Hartle-Hawking vacuum are all equivalent, while the Boulware vacuum and the Schwarzschild vacuum are equivalent. We verify this by explicitly computing the Green's functions in closed form for a massless scalar field corresponding to each of these vacua. Obtaining a closed form for the Green's function corresponding to the Boulware vacuum is non-trivial, we present it here for the first time by deriving a new summation formula for associated Legendre functions that allows us to perform the mode-sum. Having obtained the propagator for the Boulware vacuum, which is a zero-temperature Green's function, we can then consider the case of a scalar field at an arbitrary temperature by an infinite image imaginary-time sum, which yields the Hartle-Hawking propagator upon setting the temperature to the Hawking temperature. Finally, we compute the renormalized stress-energy tensor for a massless scalar field in the various quantum vacua.

Self-force on an arbitrarily coupled static scalar particle in a wormhole space-time

In this paper, we consider the problem of computing the self-force and self-energy for a static scalar charge in a wormhole space-time with throat profile $r(ρ)=\sqrt{ρ^{2}+a^{2}}$ for arbitrary coupling of the field to the curvature. This calculation has previously been considered numerically by Bezerra and Khusnutdinov, while analytic results have been obtained in the special cases of minimal ($ξ=0$) coupling and conformal coupling ($ξ=1/8$ in three dimensions). We present here a closed form expression for the static Green's function for arbitrary coupling and hence we obtain an analytic expression for the self-force. The self-force depends crucially on the coupling of the field to the curvature of the space-time and hence it is useful to determine the dependence explicitly. The numerical computation can identify some qualitative aspects of this dependence such as the change in the sign of the force as it passes through the conformally coupled value, as well as the fact that the self-force diverges for $ξ=1/2$. From the closed form expression, it is straight-forward to see that there is an infinite set of values of the coupling constant for which the self-force diverges, but we also see that there is an infinite set of values for which the self-force vanishes.

Static Kerr Green's Function in Closed Form and an Analytic Derivation of the Self-Force for a Static Scalar Charge in Kerr Space-Time

We derive a closed-form solution for the Green's function for the wave equation of a static (with respect to an undragged, static observer at infinity) scalar charge in the Kerr space-time. We employ our solution to obtain an analytic expression for the self-force on such a charge, comparing our results to those previously obtained using the mode-sum regularization prescription.

Renormalized Vacuum Polarization and Stress Tensor on the Horizon of a Schwarzschild Black Hole Threaded by a Cosmic String

We calculate the renormalized vacuum polarization and stress tensor for a massless, arbitrarily coupled scalar field in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum state on the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole threaded by an infinte straight cosmic string. This calculation relies on a generalized Heine identity for non-integer Legendre functions which we derive without using specific properties of the Legendre functions themselves.

Vacuum Polarization on the Schwarzschild Metric with a Cosmic String

We consider the problem of the renormalization of the vacuum polarization in a symmetry space-time with axial but not spherical symmetry, Schwarzschild space-time threaded by an infinite straight cosmic string. Unlike previous calculations, our framework to compute the renormalized vacuum polarization does not rely on special properties of Legendre functions, but rather has been developed in a way that we expect to be applicable to Kerr space-time.
