Solutions of the Ginzburg-Landau equations with vorticity concentrating near a nondegenerate geodesic

It is well-known that under suitable hypotheses, for a sequence of solutions of the (simplified) Ginzburg-Landau equations $-Δu_\varepsilon +\varepsilon^{-2}(|u_\varepsilon|^2-1)u_\varepsilon = 0$, the energy and vorticity concentrate as $\varepsilon\to 0$ around a codimension $2$ stationary varifold -- a (measure theoretic) minimal surface. Much less is known about the question of whether, given a codimension $2$ minimal surface, there exists a sequence of solutions for which the given minimal surface is the limiting concentration set. The corresponding question is very well-understood for minimal hypersurfaces and the scalar Allen-Cahn equation, and for the Ginzburg-Landau equations when the minimal surface is locally area-minimizing, but otherwise quite open. We consider this question on a $3$-dimensional closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$, and we prove that any embedded nondegenerate closed geodesic can be realized as the asymptotic energy/vorticity concentration set of a sequence of solutions of the Ginzburg-Landau equations.

A One-Dimensional Variational Problem for Cholesteric Liquid Crystals with Disparate Elastic Constants

We consider a one-dimensional variational problem arising in connection with a model for cholesteric liquid crystals. The principal feature of our study is the assumption that the twist deformation of the nematic director incurs much higher energy penalty than other modes of deformation. The appropriate ratio of the elastic constants then gives a small parameter $\varepsilon$ entering an Allen-Cahn-type energy functional augmented by a twist term. We consider the behavior of the energy as $\varepsilon$ tends to zero. We demonstrate existence of the local energy minimizers classified by their overall twist, find the $Γ$-limit of the relaxed energies and show that it consists of the twist and jump terms. Further, we extend our results to include the situation when the cholesteric pitch vanishes along with $\varepsilon$.

Reduced equations for an active model of the hydroelastic waves in the cochlea

Building upon our earlier passive models for the cochlea, here we enhance the model with an active mechanism. Starting with a one-chamber simplification leading to a system of a time-dependent PDE in two spatial variables for the pressure coupled to a PDE in one spatial variable for the oscillation of the basilar membrane, we rigorously establish the validity of a dimension reduction to a system to two ODE's. We then present numerical simulations demonstrating the ability of this reduced active system to distinguish and amplify multi-frequency input signals.

A Novel Landau-de Gennes Model with Quartic Elastic Terms

Within the framework of the generalized Landau-de Gennes theory, we identify a $Q$-tensor-based energy that reduces to the four-constant Oseen-Frank energy when it is considered over orientable uniaxial nematic states. Although the commonly considered version of the Landau-de Gennes theory has an elastic contribution that is at most cubic in components of the $Q$-tensor and their derivatives, the alternative offered here is quartic in these variables. One clear advantage of our approach over the cubic theory is that the associated minimization problem is well-posed for a significantly wider choice of elastic constants. In particular, quartic energy can be used to model nematic-to-isotropic phase transitions for highly disparate elastic constants. In addition to proving well-posedness of the proposed version of the Landau-de Gennes theory, we establish a rigorous connection between this theory and its Oseen-Frank counterpart via a $Γ$-convergence argument in the limit of vanishing nematic correlation length. We also prove strong convergence of the associated minimizers.

A Degenerate Isoperimetric Problem in the Plane

We establish sufficient conditions for existence of curves minimizing length as measured with respect to a degenerate metric on the plane while enclosing a specified amount of Euclidean area. Non-existence of minimizers can occur and examples are provided. This continues the investigation begun in [ABCDS] where the metric ds^2 near the singularities equals a quadratic polynomial times the standard metric. Here we allow the conformal factor to be any smooth non-negative potential vanishing at isolated points provided the Hessian at these points is positive definite. These isoperimetric curves, appropriately parametrized, arise as traveling wave solutions to a bi-stable Hamiltonian system.

A Degenerate Isoperimetric Problem and Traveling Waves to a Bi-stable Hamiltonian System

We analyze a non-standard isoperimetric problem in the plane associated with a metric having degenerate conformal factor at two points. Under certain assumptions on the conformal factor, we establish the existence of curves of least length under a constraint associated with enclosed Euclidean area. As a motivation for and application of this isoperimetric problem, we identify these isoperimetric curves, appropriately parametrized, as traveling wave solutions to a bi-stable Hamiltonian system of PDE's. We also determine the existence of a maximal propagation speed for these traveling waves through an explicit upper bound depending on the conformal factor.

Dimension reduction for the Landau-de Gennes model in planar nematic thin films

We use the method of $Γ$-convergence to study the behavior of the Landau-de Gennes model for a nematic liquid crystalline film in the limit of vanishing thickness. In this asymptotic regime, surface energy plays a greater role and we take particular care in understanding its influence on the structure of the minimizers of the derived two-dimensional energy. We assume general weak anchoring conditions on the top and the bottom surfaces of the film and the strong Dirichlet boundary conditions on the lateral boundary of the film. The constants in the weak anchoring conditions are chosen so as to enforce that a surface-energy-minimizing nematic $Q$-tensor has the normal to the film as one of its eigenvectors. We establish a general convergence result and then discuss the limiting problem in several parameter regimes.

Cascade of minimizers for a nonlocal isoperimetric problem in thin domains

For $Ω_\e=(0,\e)\times (0,1)$ a thin rectangle, we consider minimization of the two-dimensional nonlocal isoperimetric problem given by \[ \inf_u E^γ_{Ω_\e}(u)\] where \[ E^γ_{Ω_\e}(u):= P_{Ω_\e}(\{u(x)=1\})+γ\int_{Ω_\e}\abs{\nabla{v}}^2\,dx \] and the minimization is taken over competitors $u\in BV(Ω_\e;\{\pm 1\})$ satisfying a mass constraint $\fint_{Ω_\e}u=m$ for some $m\in (-1,1)$. Here $P_{Ω_\e}(\{u(x)=1\})$ denotes the perimeter of the set $\{u(x)=1\}$ in $Ω_\e$, $\fint$ denotes the integral average and $v$ denotes the solution to the Poisson problem \[ -Δv=u-m\;\mbox{in}\;Ω_\e,\quad\nabla v\cdot n_{\partialΩ_\e}=0\;\mbox{on}\;\partialΩ_\e,\quad\int_{Ω_\e}v=0.\] We show that a striped pattern is the minimizer for $\e\ll 1$ with the number of stripes growing like $γ^{1/3}$ as $γ\to\infty.$ We then present generalizations of this result to higher dimensions.

Kinematic and dynamic vortices in a thin film driven by an applied current and magnetic field

Using a Ginzburg-Landau model, we study the vortex behavior of a rectangular thin film superconductor subjected to an applied current fed into a portion of the sides and an applied magnetic field directed orthogonal to the film. Through a center manifold reduction we develop a rigorous bifurcation theory for the appearance of periodic solutions in certain parameter regimes near the normal state. The leading order dynamics yield in particular a motion law for kinematic vortices moving up and down the center line of the sample. We also present computations that reveal the co-existence and periodic evolution of kinematic and magnetic vortices.

Dynamics Of Ginzburg-Landau And Gross-Pitaevskii Vortices On Manifolds

We consider the dissipative heat flow and conservative Gross-Pitaevskii dynamics associated with the Ginzburg-Landau energy posed on a Riemannian 2-manifold M. We show the limiting vortices of the solutions to these two problems evolve according to the gradient flow and Hamiltonian point-vortex flow respectively, associated with the renormalized energy on M. For the heat flow, we then specialize to the case where M is a sphere and study the limiting system of ODE's and establish an annihilation result. Finally, for the Ginzburg-Landau heat flow on a sphere, we derive some weighted energy identities.
