Potential automorphy over CM fields

Let $F$ be a CM number field. We prove modularity lifting theorems for regular $n$-dimensional Galois representations over $F$ without any self-duality condition. We deduce that all elliptic curves $E$ over $F$ are potentially modular, and furthermore satisfy the Sato--Tate conjecture. As an application of a different sort, we also prove the Ramanujan Conjecture for weight zero cuspidal automorphic representations for $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbf{A}_F)$.

Prisms and Prismatic Cohomology

We introduce the notion of a prism, which may be regarded as a "deperfection" of the notion of a perfectoid ring. Using prisms, we attach a ringed site -- the prismatic site -- to a $p$-adic formal scheme. The resulting cohomology theory specializes to (and often refines) most known integral $p$-adic cohomology theories. As applications, we prove an improved version of the almost purity theorem allowing ramification along arbitrary closed subsets (without using adic spaces), give a co-ordinate free description of $q$-de Rham cohomology as conjectured by the second author, and settle a vanishing conjecture for the $p$-adic Tate twists $\mathbf{Z}_p(n)$ introduced in previous joint work with Morrow.

Canonical q-deformations in arithmetic geometry

In recent work with Bhatt and Morrow, we defined a new integral p-adic cohomology theory interpolating between etale and de Rham cohomology. An unexpected feature of this cohomology is that in coordinates, it can be computed by a q-deformation of the de Rham complex, which is thus canonical, at least in the derived category. In this short survey, we try to explain what we know about this phenomenon, and what can be conjectured to hold.

Topological realisations of absolute Galois groups

Let $F$ be a field of characteristic $0$ containing all roots of unity. We construct a functorial compact Hausdorff space $X_F$ whose profinite fundamental group agrees with the absolute Galois group of $F$, i.e. the category of finite covering spaces of $X_F$ is equivalent to the category of finite extensions of $F$. The construction is based on the ring of rational Witt vectors of $F$. In the case of the cyclotomic extension of $\mathbb{Q}$, the classical fundamental group of $X_F$ is a (proper) dense subgroup of the absolute Galois group of $F$. We also discuss a variant of this construction when the field is not required to contain all roots of unity, in which case there are natural Frobenius-type automorphisms which encode the descent along the cyclotomic extension.

Integral $p$-adic Hodge theory - announcement

Given a proper, smooth (formal) scheme over the ring of integers of $\mathbb C_p$, we prove that if the crystalline cohomology of its special fibre is torsion-free then the $p$-adic étale cohomology of its generic fibre is also torsion-free. In this announcement we sketch the proof, which relies on the construction of a new cohomology theory interpolating between crystalline and étale cohomology. Further details and results, including a comparison isomorphism, will be presented in the full forthcoming article.

On the generic part of the cohomology of compact unitary Shimura varieties

The goal of this paper is to show that the cohomology of compact unitary Shimura varieties is concentrated in the middle degree and torsion-free, after localizing at a maximal ideal of the Hecke algebra satisfying a suitable genericity assumption. Along the way, we establish various foundational results on the geometry of the Hodge-Tate period map. In particular, we compare the fibres of the Hodge-Tate period map with Igusa varieties.

On the p-adic cohomology of the Lubin-Tate tower

We prove a finiteness result for the p-adic cohomology of the Lubin-Tate tower. For any n>=1 and p-adic field F, this provides a canonical functor from admissible p-adic representations of GL_n(F) towards admissible p-adic representations of Gal_F x D^*, where Gal_F is the absolute Galois group of F, and D/F is the central division algebra of invariant 1/n. Moreover, we verify a local-global-compatibility statement for this correspondence, and compatibility with the patching construction of Caraiani-Emerton-Gee-Geraghty-Paskunas-Shin.

On torsion in the cohomology of locally symmetric varieties

The main result of this paper is the existence of Galois representations associated with the mod $p$ (or mod $p^m$) cohomology of the locally symmetric spaces for $\GL_n$ over a totally real or CM field, proving conjectures of Ash and others. Following an old suggestion of Clozel, recently realized by Harris-Lan-Taylor-Thorne for characteristic 0 cohomology classes, one realizes the cohomology of the locally symmetric spaces for $\GL_n$ as a boundary contribution of the cohomology of symplectic or unitary Shimura varieties, so that the key problem is to understand torsion in the cohomology of Shimura varieties. Thus, we prove new results on the $p$-adic geometry of Shimura varieties (of Hodge type). Namely, the Shimura varieties become perfectoid when passing to the inverse limit over all levels at $p$, and a new period map towards the flag variety exists on them, called the Hodge-Tate period map. It is roughly analogous to the embedding of the hermitian symmetric domain (which is roughly the inverse limit over all levels of the complex points of the Shimura variety) into its compact dual. The Hodge-Tate period map has several favorable properties, the most important being that it commutes with the Hecke operators away from $p$ (for the trivial action of these Hecke operators on the flag variety), and that automorphic vector bundles come via pullback from the flag variety.

The pro-étale topology for schemes

We give a new definition of the derived category of constructible $\ell$-adic sheaves on a scheme, which is as simple as the geometric intuition behind them. Moreover, we define a refined fundamental group of schemes, which is large enough to see all lisse $\ell$-adic sheaves, even on non-normal schemes. To accomplish these tasks, we define and study the pro-étale topology, which is a Grothendieck topology on schemes that is closely related to the étale topology, and yet better suited for infinite constructions typically encountered in $\ell$-adic cohomology. An essential foundational result is that this site is locally contractible in a well-defined sense.

Moduli of p-divisible groups

We prove several results about p-divisible groups and Rapoport-Zink spaces. Our main goal is to prove that Rapoport-Zink spaces at infinite level are naturally perfectoid spaces, and to give a description of these spaces purely in terms of p-adic Hodge theory. This allows us to formulate and prove duality isomorphisms between basic Rapoport-Zink spaces at infinite level in general. Moreover, we identify the image of the period morphism, reproving results of Faltings. For this, we give a general classification of p-divisible groups over the ring of integers of a complete algebraically closed field in the spirit of Riemann's classification of complex abelian varieties. Another key ingredient is a full faithfulness result for the Dieudonné module functor for p-divisible groups over semiperfect rings (meaning rings on which the Frobenius map is surjective).

On the cohomology of compact unitary group Shimura varieties at ramified split places

In this article, we prove results about the cohomology of compact unitary group Shimura varieties at split places. In nonendoscopic cases, we are able to give a full description of the cohomology, after restricting to integral Hecke operators at p on the automorphic side. We allow arbitrary ramification at p; even the PEL data may be ramified. This gives a description of the semisimple local Hasse-Weil zeta function in these cases. We also treat cases of nontrivial endoscopy. For this purpose, we give a general stabilization of the expression given in previous work, following the stabilization given by Kottwitz. This introduces endoscopic transfers of the functions $ϕ_{τ,h}$ which were introduced in previous work via deformation spaces of $p$-divisible groups. We state a general conjecture relating these endoscopic transfers with Langlands parameters. We verify this conjecture in all cases of EL type, and deduce new results about the endoscopic part of the cohomology of Shimura varieties. This allows us to simplify the construction of Galois representations attached to conjugate self-dual regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n$, as previously constructed by one of us.

The Local Langlands correspondence for $\GL_n$ over $p$-adic fields

We reprove the Local Langlands Correspondence for $\GL_n$ over $p$-adic fields as well as the existence of $\ell$-adic Galois representations attached to (most) regular algebraic conjugate self-dual cuspidal automorphic representations, for which we prove a local-global compatibility statement as in the book of Harris-Taylor. In contrast to the proofs of the Local Langlands Correspondence given by Henniart and Harris-Taylor our proof completely by-passes the numerical Local Langlands Correspondence of Henniart. Instead, we make use of a previous result describing the inertia-invariant nearby cycles in certain regular situations.
