Local thermal equilibrium for certain stochastic models of heat transport

This paper is about nonequilibrium steady states (NESS) of a class of stochastic models in which particles exchange energy with their "local environments" rather than directly with one another. The physical domain of the system can be a bounded region of $\mathbb R^d$ for any $d \ge 1$. We assume that the temperature at the boundary of the domain is prescribed and is nonconstant, so that the system is forced out of equilibrium. Our main result is local thermal equilibrium in the infinite volume limit. In the Hamiltonian context, this would mean that at any location $x$ in the domain, local marginal distributions of NESS tend to a probability with density $\frac{1}{Z} e^{-β(x) H}$, permitting one to define the local temperature at $x$ to be $β(x)^{-1}$. We prove also that in the infinite volume limit, the mean energy profile of NESS satisfies Laplace's equation for the prescribed boundary condition. Our method of proof is duality: by reversing the sample paths of particle movements, we convert the problem of studying local marginal energy distributions at $x$ to that of joint hitting distributions of certain random walks starting from $x$, and prove that the walks in question become increasingly independent as system size tends to infinity.

Non equilibrium density profiles in Lorentz tubes with thermostated boundaries

We consider a long Lorentz tube with absorbing boundaries. Particles are injected to the tube from the left end. We compute the equilibrium density profiles in two cases: the semi-infinite tube (in which case the density is constant) and a long finite tube (in which case the density is linear). In the latter case, we also show that convergence to equilibrium is well described by the heat equation. In order to prove these results, we obtain new results for the Lorentz particle which are of independent interest. First, we show that a particle conditioned not to hit the boundary for a long time converges to the Brownian meander. Second, we prove several local limit theorems for particles having a prescribed behavior in the past.

Tail asymptotics of free path lengths for the periodic Lorentz process. On Dettmann's geometric conjectures

In the simplest case, consider a $\mathbb{Z}^d$-periodic ($d \geq 3$) arrangement of balls of radii < 1/2, and select a random direction and point (outside the balls). According to Dettmann's first conjecture, the probability that the so determined free flight (until the first hitting of a ball) is larger than $t >>1$ is $\sim \frac{C}{t}$, where $C$ is explicitly given by the geometry of the model. In its simplest form, Dettmann's second conjecture is related to the previous case with tangent balls (of radii 1/2). The conjectures are established in a more general setup: for $\mathcal{L}$-periodic configuration of - possibly intersecting - convex bodies with $\mathcal{L}$ being a non-degenerate lattice. These questions are related to Pólya's visibility problem (1918), to theories of Bourgain-Golse-Wennberg (1998-) and of Marklof-Strömbergsson (2010-). The results also provide the asymptotic covariance of the periodic Lorentz process assuming it has a limit in the super-diffusive scaling, a fact if $d = 2$ and the horizon is infinite.

Lorentz Process with shrinking holes in a wall

We ascertain the diffusively scaled limit of a periodic Lorentz process in a strip with an almost reflecting wall at the origin. Here, almost reflecting means that the wall contains a small hole waning in time. The limiting process is a quasi-reflected Brownian motion, which is Markovian but not strong Markovian. Local time results for the periodic Lorentz process, having independent interest, are also found and used.

A central limit theorem for time-dependent dynamical systems

The work [8] established memory loss in the time-dependent (non-random) case of uniformly expanding maps of the interval. Here we find conditions under which we have convergence to the normal distribution of the appropriately scaled Birkhoff-like partial sums of appropriate test functions. A substantial part of the problem is to ensure that the variances of the partial sums tend to infinity (cf. the zero-cohomology condition in the autonomous case). In fact, the present paper is the first one where non-random, i. e. specific examples are also found, which are not small perturbations of a given map. Our approach uses martingale approximation technique in the form of [9].
