BRST, Ward identities, gauge dependence, and a functional renormalization group

Basic properties of gauge theories in the framework of Faddeev-Popov (FP) method, Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism, functional renormalization group (FRG) approach are considered. The FP and BV quantizations are characterized by the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) symmetry while the BRST symmetry is broken in the FRG approach. It is shown that the FP method, the BV formalism and the FRG approach can be provided with the Slavnov-Taylor identity, the Ward identity and the modified Slavnov-Taylor identity, respectively. It is proven that using the background field method the background gauge invariance of effective action within the FP and FRG quantization procedures can be achieved in nonlinear gauges. The gauge-dependence problem within the FP, BV and FRG quantizations is studied. Arguments allowing us to state the existence of principal problems of the FRG in the case of gauge theories are given.

Gauge dependence of effective average action

The gauge dependence of effective average action in the functional renormalization group is studied. The effective average action is considered as non-perturbative solution to the flow equation which is the basic equation of the method. It is proven that at any scale of IR cutoff the effective average action depends on gauges making impossible physical interpretation of all obtained results in this method.

Functional renormalization group approach and gauge dependence in gravity theories

We investigate the gauge symmetry and gauge fixing dependence properties of the effective average action for quantum gravity models of general form. Using the background field formalism and the standard BRST-based arguments, one can establish the special class of regulator functions that preserves the background field symmetry of the effective average action. Unfortunately, regardless the gauge symmetry is preserved at the quantum level, the non-invariance of the regulator action under the global BRST transformations leads to the gauge fixing dependence even under the use of the on-shell conditions.

Gauge dependence of alternative flow equation for the functional renormalization group

The gauge dependence problem of alternative flow equation for the functional renormalization group is studied. It is shown that the effective two-particle irreducible effective action depends on gauges at any value of IR parameter $k$. The situation with gauge dependence is similar to the standard formulation based on the effective one-particle irreducible effective action.

Multiplicative renormalizability of Yang-Mills theory with the background field method in the BV-formalism

Studying the gauge-invariant renormalizability of four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory using the background field method and the BV-formalism, we derive a classical master-equation homogeneous with respect to the antibracket by introducing antifield partners to the background fields and parameters. The constructed model can be renormalized by the standard method of introducing counterterms. This model does not have (exact) multiplicative renormalizability but it does have this property in the physical sector (quasimultiplicative renormalizability).

A systematic study of finite BRST-BFV transformations in generalized Hamiltonian formalism

We study systematically finite BRST-BFV transformations in the generalized Hamiltonian formalism. We present explicitly their Jacobians and the form of a solution to the compensation equation determining the functional field dependence of finite Fermionic parameters, necessary to generate arbitrary finite change of gauge-fixing functions in the path integral.

A systematic study of finite BRST-BV transformations within W-X formulation of the standard and the Sp(2)-extended field-antifield formalism

Finite BRST-BV transformations are studied systematically within the W-X formulation of the standard and the Sp(2)-extended field-antifield formalism. The finite BRST-BV transformations are introduced by formulating a new version of the Lie equations. The corresponding finite change of the gauge-fixing master action X and the corresponding Ward identity are derived.

Closed description of arbitrariness in resolving quantum master equation

In the most general case of the Delta exact operator valued generators constructed of an arbitrary Fermion operator, we present a closed solution for the transformed master action in terms of the original master action in the closed form of the corresponding path integral. We show in detail how that path integral reduces to the known result in the case of being the Delta exact generators constructed of an arbitrary Fermion function.

Conversion of second-class constraints and resolving the zero curvature conditions in the geometric quantization theory

In the approach to the geometric quantization, based on the conversion of second-class constraints, we resolve the respective non-linear zero curvature conditions for the extended symplectic potential. From the zero curvature conditions, we deduce new, linear, equations for the extended symplectic potential. Then we show that being the linear equations satisfied, their solution does certainly satisfy the non-linear zero curvature condition, as well. Finally, we give the functional resolution to the new linear equations, and then deduce the respective path integral representation. We do our consideration as to the general case of a phase superspace where both Boson and Fermion coordinates are present on equal footing.

General quantum-mechanical setting for field-antifield formalism as a hyper-gauge theory

A general quantum-mechanical setting is proposed for the field-antifield formalism as a unique hyper-gauge theory in the field-antifield space. We formulate a Schrödinger-type equation to describe the quantum evolution in a "current time" purely formal in its nature. The corresponding Hamiltonian is defined in the form of a supercommutator of the delta-operator with a hyper-gauge Fermion. The initial wave function is restricted to be annihilated with the delta-operator. The Schrödinger's equation is resolved in a closed form of the path integral, whose action contains the symmetric Weyl's symbol of the Hamiltonian. We take the path integral explicitly in the case of being a hyper-gauge Fermion an arbitrary function rather than an operator.

Legendre transformations and Clairaut-type equations

It is noted that the Legendre transformations in the standard formulation of quantum field theory have the form of functional Clairaut-type equations. It is shown that in presence of composite fields the Clairaut-type form holds after loop corrections are taken into account. A new solution to the functional Clairaut-type equation appearing in field theories with composite fields is found.

Quantum localization of Classical Mechanics

Quantum localization of classical mechanics within the BRST-BFV and BV (or field-antifield) quantization methods are studied. It is shown that a special choice of gauge fixing functions (or BRST-BFV charge) together with the unitary limit leads to Hamiltonian localization in the path integral of the BRST-BFV formalism. In turn, we find that a special choice of gauge fixing functions being proportional to extremals of an initial non-degenerate classical action together with a very special solution of the classical master equation result in Lagrangian localization in the partition function of the BV formalism.

Representation of a gauge field via intrinsic "BRST" operator

We show that there exists a representation of a matrix valued gauge field via intrinsic "BRST" operator assigned to matrix valued generators of a gauge algebra. In this way, we reproduce the standard formulation of the ordinary Yang - Mills theory. In the case of a generating quasigroup/groupoid, we give a natural counterpart to the Yang - Mills action. The latter counterpart does also apply as to the most general case of an involution for matrix-valued gauge generators.

Finite BRST-BFV transformations for dynamical systems with second-class constraints

We study finite field dependent BRST-BFV transformations for dynamical systems with first- and second-class constraints within the generalized Hamiltonian formalism. We find explicitly their Jacobians and the form of a solution to the compensation equation necessary for generating an arbitrary finite change of gauge-fixing functionals in the path integral.

Gauge dependence of vacuum expectation values of gauge invariant operators from soft breaking of BRST symmetry. Example of Gribov-Zwanziger action

We review the study of influence of the so-called soft BRST symmetry breaking within the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism introduced in our papers [JHEP 1110 (2011) 043, arXiv:1108.4820 [hep-th], MPLA 27 (2012) 1250067, arXiv:1201.4720 [hep-th]] on gauge dependence of the effective action and vacuum expectation values of gauge invariant operators. We derive the Ward identities for generating functionals of Green's functions for a given theory with soft BRST symmetry breaking term being added to the quantum action and investigate theirs gauge dependence. It is strongly argued that gauge theories with a soft breaking of BRST symmetry are inconsistent within the BV formalism because of the gauge-dependence of $S$-matrix. The application to the Gribov-Zwanziger action (enlarging SU(N) Yang-Mills gauge theory by means of not gauge-invariant horizon function) for the one-parameter family of $R_ξ$ gauges with use of the new form of the Hermitian augmented Faddeev-Popov operator (being by Faddeev-Popov operator for transverse components of Yang--Mills fields) is considered.

A systematic study of finite BRST-BFV transformations in $Sp(2)$-extended generalized Hamiltonian formalism

We study systematically finite BRST-BFV transformations in $Sp(2)$-extended generalized Hamiltonian formalism. We present explicitly their Jacobians and the form of a solution to the compensation equation determining the functional field dependence of finite Fermionic parameters, necessary to generate arbitrary finite change of gauge-fixing functions in the path integral.

A systematic study of finite field dependent BRST-BV transformations in $Sp(2)$ extended field-antifield formalism

In the framework of $Sp(2)$ extended Lagrangian field-antifield BV formalism we study systematically the role of finite field-dependent BRST-BV transformations. We have proved that the Jacobian of a finite BRST-BV transformation is capable of generating arbitrary finite change of the gauge-fixing function in the path integral.

preprint2013arXiv

Field-dependent BRST transformations in Yang-Mills theory

We find an explicit form for the Jacobian of arbitrary field-dependent BRST transformations in Yang-Mills theory. For the functional-integral representation of the (gauge-fixed) Yang-Mills vacuum functional, such transformations merely amount to a precise change in the gauge-fixing functional. This proves the independence of the vacuum functional under any field-dependent BRST transformation. We also give a formula for the transformation parameter functional which generates a prescribed change of gauge and evaluate it for connecting two arbitrary R_xi gauges.

Gribov horizon beyond the Landau gauge

Gribov and Zwanziger proposed a modification of Yang-Mills theory in order to cure the Gribov copy problem. We employ field-dependent BRST transformations to generalize the Gribov-Zwanziger model from the Landau gauge to general R_xi gauges. The Gribov horizon functional is presented in explicit form, in both the non-local and local variants. Finally, we show how to reach any given gauge from the Landau one.

Sp(2) Renormalization

The renormalization of general gauge theories on flat and curved space-time backgrounds is considered within the Sp(2)-covariant quantization method. We assume the existence of a gauge-invariant and diffeomorphism invariant regularization. Using the Sp(2)-covariant formalism one can show that the theory possesses gauge invariant and diffeomorphism invariant renormalizability to all orders in the loop expansion and the extended BRST symmetry after renormalization is preserved. The advantage of the Sp(2)-method compared to the standard Batalin-Vilkovisky approach is that, in reducible theories, the structure of ghosts and ghosts for ghosts and auxiliary fields is described in terms of irreducible representations of the Sp(2) group. This makes the presentation of solutions to the master equations in more simple and systematic way because they are Sp(2)- scalars.

On the renormalization of gauge theories in curved space-time

We consider the renormalization of general gauge theories on curved space-time background, with the main assumption being the existence of a gauge-invariant and diffeomorphism invariant regularization. Using the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism one can show that the theory possesses gauge invariant and diffeomorphism invariant renormalizability at quantum level, up to an arbitrary order of the loop expansion. Starting from this point we discuss the locality of the counterterms and the general prescription for constructing the power-counting renormalizable theories on curved background.
