Object classification on video data of meteors and meteor-like phenomena: algorithm and data

Every moment, countless meteoroids enter our atmosphere unseen. The detection and measurement of meteors offer the unique opportunity to gain insights into the composition of our solar systems' celestial bodies. Researchers, therefore, carry out a wide-area-sky-monitoring to secure 360-degree video material, saving every single entry of a meteor. Existing machine intelligence cannot accurately recognize events of meteors intersecting the earth's atmosphere due to a lack of high-quality training data publicly available. This work presents four reusable open source solutions for researchers trained on data we collected due to the lack of available labeled high-quality training data. We refer to the proposed dataset as the NightSkyUCP dataset, consisting of a balanced set of 10,000 meteor- and 10,000 non-meteor-events. Our solutions apply various machine learning techniques, namely classification, feature learning, anomaly detection, and extrapolation. For the classification task, a mean accuracy of 99.1\% is achieved. The code and data are made public at figshare with DOI: 10.6084/m9.figshare.16451625

Wide-angle photo- and electroproduction of pions to twist-3 accuracy

We investigate wide-angle photo- and electroproduction of pions within the handbag mechanism in which the $γ^{(*)} N\to πN'$ amplitudes factorize into hard partonic subprocess amplitudes, $γ^{(*)} q\to πq'$, and form factors representing $1/x$-moments of generalized parton distributions (GPDs). The subprocess is calculated to twist-3 accuracy taking into account the 2- and 3-body Fock components of the pion. Both components are required for achieving gauge invariance in QED and QCD. The twist-2 and twist-3 distribution amplitudes (DAs) of the pion as well as the form factors are taken from our study of $π^0$ photoproduction. Extensive results on photoproduction of charged pions are presented and compared to experiment. Predictions on electroproduction of pions as well as on spin effects are also given. As a byproduct of our analysis we also obtain the complete twist-3 subprocess amplitudes contributing to deeply-virtual electroproduction of pions.

Wide-angle photoproduction of the $η'$-meson and its gluon content

We investigate wide-angle photoproduction of the $η'$ meson within the handbag approach to twist-3 accuracy. It turns out that, due to the gluon content of the $η'$, this process is dominated by twist-2 in contrast with pion and $η$ photoproduction. Using the presently available information on the twist-2 and twist-3 distribution amplitudes and on the $η- η'$ mixing, we provide prediction for the $η'$ cross section and helicity correlations. It is argued that $η'$ photoproduction is well suited to improve our knowledge of the two-gluon distribution amplitude.

Unveiling the nature of red novae cool explosions using archive plate photometry

Based on archive photographic photometry and recent CCD photometric data for red novae V4332 Sgr and V838 Mon, we established their stellar composition, exploded components, and the nature of explosions. Low temperature in the outburst maximum is due to quasi-adiabatic expansion of a massive stellar envelope after the central energy surge preceded the outburst.

$ π^- p \rightarrow D^- Λ_{c}^{+} $ within the Generalized Parton Picture

We investigate the reaction $ π^- p \rightarrow D^- Λ_{c}^{+} $ within the generalized parton picture. The process is described by a handbag-type mechanism with the charm-quark mass acting as the hard scale. As in the case of preceding work on $\bar{p} p \rightarrow \barΛ^-_c Λ_{c}^{+} $ we argue that the process amplitude factorizes into one for the perturbatively calculable partonic subprocess $\bar{u} u\rightarrow \bar{c} c$ and hadronic matrix elements that can be parameterized in terms of generalized parton distributions. Modeling the generalized parton distributions by overlaps of (valence-quark) light-cone wave functions for the hadrons involved, we obtain numerical results for unpolarized differential and integrated cross sections as well as spin observables. Our approach works well above the production threshold ($s \gtrsim 20 $GeV$^2$) in the forward hemisphere and predicts unpolarized cross sections of the order of nb, a finding that could be of interest in view of plans to measure $ π^- p \rightarrow D^- Λ_{c}^{+} $ at J-PARC.

Nova Aquilae 1918 (V603 Aql) Faded by 0.44 mag/century from 1938-2013

We present the light curve of the old nova V603 Aql (Nova Aql 1918) from 1898-1918 and 1934-2013 using 22,721 archival magnitudes. All of our magnitudes are either in, or accurately transformed into, the Johnson $B$ and $V$ magnitude systems. This is vital because offsets in old sequences and the visual-to-$V$ transformation make for errors from 0.1-1.0 magnitude if not corrected. Our V603 Aql light curve is the first time that this has been done for any nova. Our goal was to see the evolution of the mass accretion rate on the century time scale, and to test the long-standing prediction of the Hibernation model that old novae should be fading significantly in the century after their eruption is long over. The 1918 nova eruption was completely finished by 1938 when the nova decline stopped, and when the star had faded to fainter than its pre-nova brightness of $B=11.43 \pm 0.03$ mag. We find that the nova light from 1938-2013 was significantly fading, with this being seen consistently in three independent data sets (the Sonneberg plates in $B$, the AAVSO $V$ light curve, and the non-AAVSO $V$ light curve). We find that V603 Aql is declining in brightness at an average rate of $0.44 \pm 0.04$ mag per century since 1938. This work provides remarkable confirmation of an important prediction of the Hibernation model.

The photon to pseudoscalar meson transition form factors

In this talk it is reported on an analysis of the form factors for the transitions from a photon to one of the pseudoscalar mesons pi0, eta, eta', etac within the modified perturbative approach in which quark transverse degrees of freedom are retained. The report is focused on the discussion of the surprising features the new BaBar data exhibit, namely the sharp rise of the pi-gamma form factor with the photon virtuality and the strong breaking of flavor symmetry in the sector of pseudoscalar mesons.

Long-Term Light Curve of Highly-Variable Protostellar Star GM Cep

We present data from the archival plates at Harvard College Observatory and Sonneberg Observatory showing the field of the solar type pre-main sequence star GM Cep. A total of 186 magnitudes of GM Cep have been measured on these archival plates, with 176 in blue sensitivity, 6 in visible, and 4 in red. We combine our data with data from the literature and from the American Association of Variable Star Observers to depict the long-term light curves of GM Cep in both B and V wavelengths. The light curves span from 1895 until now, with two densely sampled regions (1935 to 1945 in B band, and 2006 until now in V band). The long-term light curves do not show any fast rise behavior as predicted by an accretion mechanism. Both the light curves and the magnitude histograms confirm the conclusion that the light curves are dominated by dips (possibly from extinction) superposed on some quiescence state, instead of outbursts caused by accretion flares. Our result excludes the possibility of GM Cep being a FUor, EXor, or McNeil's Nebula type star. Several special cases of T Tauri stars were checked, but none of these light curves are compatible with that of GM Cep. The lack of periodicity in the light curve excludes the possibility of GM Cep being a KH 15D system.

Discovery of a Second Nova Eruption of V2487 Ophiuchi

A directed search for previously-undiscovered nova eruptions was conducted in the astronomical plate archives at Harvard College Observatory and Sonneberg Observatory. We found that an eruption of V2487 Oph (Nova Oph 1998) occurred on 1900 June 20. V2487 Oph was previously classified as a classical nova, which we identified as a probable recurrent nova based on its large expansion velocities and the presence of high excitation lines in the outburst spectrum. The event was recorded on Harvard plate AM 505, at a B magnitude of 10.27 +/- 0.11, which is near peak. The outburst can only be seen on one plate, but the image has a characteristic dumbbell shape (caused by a double exposure) that is identical to the other star images on the plate, and thus is not a plate defect. We conclude that this is in fact a previously-undiscovered nova outburst of V2487 Oph, confirming our prediction that it is a recurrent nova. We also examine the discovery efficiency for eruptions of the system and conclude that a randomly-timed outburst has, on average, a 30% chance of being discovered in the past century. Using this, we deduce a recurrence time for V2487 Oph of approximately 18 years, which implies that the next eruption is expected around 2016.

The Behavior of Novae Light Curves Before Eruption

In 1975, E. R. Robinson conducted the hallmark study of the behavior of classical nova light curves before eruption, and this work has now become part of the standard knowledge of novae. He made three points; that 5 out of 11 novae showed pre-eruption rises in the years before eruption, that one nova (V446 Her) showed drastic changes in the variability across eruptions, and that all but one of the novae (excepting BT Mon) have the same quiescent magnitudes before and after the outburst. This work has not been tested since it came out. We have now tested these results by going back to the original archival photographic plates and measuring large numbers of pre-eruption magnitudes for many novae using comparison stars on a modern magnitude scale. We find in particular that four out of five claimed pre-eruption rises are due to simple mistakes in the old literature, that V446 Her has the same amplitude of variations across its 1960 eruption, and that BT Mon has essentially unchanged brightness across its 1939 eruption. Out of 22 nova eruptions, we find two confirmed cases of significant pre-eruption rises (for V533 Her and V1500 Cyg), while T CrB has a deep pre-eruption dip. These events are a challenge to theorists. We find no significant cases of changes in variability across 27 nova eruptions beyond what is expected due to the usual fluctuations seen in novae away from eruptions. For 30 classical novae plus 19 eruptions from 6 recurrent novae, we find that the average change in magnitude from before the eruption to long after the eruption is 0.0 mag. However, we do find five novae (V723 Cas, V1500 Cyg, V1974 Cyg, V4633 Sgr, and RW UMi) that have significantly large changes, in that the post-eruption quiescent brightness level is over ten times brighter than the pre-eruption level.

The two-gluon components of the eta and eta' mesons to leading-twist accuracy

We critically reexamine the formalism for treating the leading-twist contributions from the two-gluon Fock components occurring in hard processes that involve eta and eta' mesons and establish a consistent set of conventions for the definition of the gluon distribution amplitudes, the anomalous dimensions as well as the projector of a two-gluon state onto an eta or eta' state. We calculate the eta, eta'--photon transition form factor to order alpha_s and show the cancellation of the collinear and UV singularities explicitly. An estimate of the lowest Gegenbauer coefficients of the gluon and quark distribution amplitudes is obtained from a fit to the eta, eta'--photon transition form factor data. In order to elucidate the role of the two-gluon Fock component further, we analyze electroproduction of eta, eta' mesons and the g*g* eta (eta') vertex.

Higher Fock states and power counting in exclusive charmonium decays

The role of higher Fock-state contributions to exclusive charmonium decays will be discussed. It will be argued that the J/Psi (Psi') decays into baryon-antibaryon pairs are dominated by the valence Fock-state contributions. P-wave charmonium decays, on the other hand, receive strong contributions from the c cbar g Fock states since the valence Fock-state contributions are suppressed in these reactions. Numerical results for the decay widths of J/Psi (Psi') into baryon-antibaryon and chi(J) into pairs of pseudoscalar mesons will be also presented and compared to data.

A perturbative approach to the eta_c-gamma transition form factor

The eta_c-gamma transition form factor is calculated within a perturbative approach. For the eta_c-meson, a wave function of the Bauer-Stech-Wirbel type is used where the two free parameters, namely the decay constant f(eta_c) and the transverse size of the wave function, are related to the Fock state probability and the width for the two-photon decay Gamma[eta_c -> gamma gamma]. The Q^2 dependence of the eta_c-gamma transition form factor is well determined.

Exclusive J/Psi and Psi'decays into baryon-antibaryon pairs

Within a perturbative approach we investigate decays of charmonium states into baryon-antibaryon pairs. Using a recently proposed wave function for the nucleon and suitable generalizations of it to the hyperons and decouplet baryons, we obtain the decay widths for the baryon-antibaryon channels in reasonable agreement with data. An important difference to previous work is the use of the c-quark mass in the perturbative calculation instead of the charmonium mass. As a consequence of this feature our approach possesses, the J/Psi and the Psi' decay widths do not scale with a high power of the ratio of their masses.

Flavor Symmtry Breaking andd Mixing Effects in the eta-gamma and eta'-gamma Transition Form Factors

We reanalyze the eta-gamma and eta'-gamma transition form factors within the modified hard scattering approach on the basis of new experimental data from CLEO and L3. Our approach perfectly describes the experimental data over a wide range of the virtuality of the probing photon, 1 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 15 GeV^2. The analysis provides hints that the conventional flavor octet-singlet scheme for the eta-eta' mixing is too simple. A more general mixing scheme on the other hand, involving two mixing angles, leads to a very good description of the transition form factors and also accounts for the two-photon decay widths of the eta and eta' mesons as well as for the ratio of the widths for the J/Psi --> eta' gamma and J/Psi --> eta gamma decays. We also investigate the questions of possible deviations of the eta and eta' distribution amplitudes from the asymptotic form and of eventual intrinsic charm in the eta and eta' mesons. We estimate the charm decay constant of the eta' meson to lie within the range -65 MeV < fc(eta') <15 MeV.
