Berry-Esseen bounds in the inhomogeneous Curie-Weiss model with external field

We study the inhomogeneous Curie-Weiss model with external field, where the inhomogeneity is introduced by adding a positive weight to every vertex and letting the interaction strength between two vertices be proportional to the product of their weights. In this model, the sum of the spins obeys a central limit theorem outside the critical line. We derive a Berry-Esseen rate of convergence for this limit theorem using Stein's method for exchangeable pairs. For this, we, amongst others, need to generalize this method to a multidimensional setting with unbounded random variables.

Precise Deviations Results for the Maxima of Some Determinantal Point Processes: the Upper Tail

We prove precise deviations results in the sense of Cramér and Petrov for the upper tail of the distribution of the maximal value for a special class of determinantal point processes that play an important role in random matrix theory. Here we cover all three regimes of moderate, large and superlarge deviations for which we determine the leading order description of the tail probabilities. As a corollary of our results we identify the region within the regime of moderate deviations for which the limiting Tracy-Widom law still predicts the correct leading order behavior. Our proofs use that the determinantal point process is given by the Christoffel-Darboux kernel for an associated family of orthogonal polynomials. The necessary asymptotic information on this kernel has mostly been obtained in [Kriecherbauer T., Schubert K., Schüler K., Venker M., Markov Process. Related Fields 21 (2015), 639-694]. In the superlarge regime these results of do not suffice and we put stronger assumptions on the point processes. The results of the present paper and the relevant parts of [Kriecherbauer T., Schubert K., Schüler K., Venker M., Markov Process. Related Fields 21 (2015), 639-694] have been proved in the dissertation [Schüler K., Ph.D. Thesis, Universität Bayreuth, 2015].

Malliavin-Stein method for Variance-Gamma approximation on Wiener space

We combine Malliavin calculus with Stein's method to derive bounds for the Variance-Gamma approximation of functionals of isonormal Gaussian processes, in particular of random variables living inside a fixed Wiener chaos induced by such a process. The bounds are presented in terms of Malliavin operators and norms of contractions. We show that a sequence of distributions of random variables in the second Wiener chaos converges to a Variance-Gamma distribution if and only if their moments of order two to six converge to that of a Variance-Gamma distributed random variable (six moment theorem). Moreover, simplified versions for Laplace or symmetrized Gamma distributions are presented. Also multivariate extensions and a universality result for homogeneous sums are considered.

Moderate deviations for stabilizing functionals in geometric probability

The purpose of the present paper is to establish explicit bounds on moderate deviation probabilities for a rather general class of geometric functionals enjoying the stabilization property, under Poisson input and the assumption of a certain control over the growth of the moments of the functional and its radius of stabilization. Our proof techniques rely on cumulant expansions and cluster measures and yield completely explicit bounds on deviation probabilities. In addition, we establish a new criterion for the limiting variance to be non-degenerate. Moreover, our main result provides a new central limit theorem, which, though stated under strong moment assumptions, does not require bounded support of the intensity of the Poisson input. We apply our results to three groups of examples: random packing models, geometric functionals based on Euclidean nearest neighbors and the sphere of influence graphs.

Moderate deviations for the determinant of Wigner matrices

We establish a moderate deviations principle (MDP) for the log-determinant $\log | \det (M_n) |$ of a Wigner matrix $M_n$ matching four moments with either the GUE or GOE ensemble. Further we establish Cramér--type moderate deviations and Berry-Esseen bounds for the log-determinant for the GUE and GOE ensembles as well as for non-symmetric and non-Hermitian Gaussian random matrices (Ginibre ensembles), respectively.

Moderate deviations for the eigenvalue counting function of Wigner matrices

We establish a moderate deviation principle (MDP) for the number of eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix in an interval. The proof relies on fine asymptotics of the variance of the eigenvalue counting function of GUE matrices due to Gustavsson. The extension to large families of Wigner matrices is based on the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem and applies localization results by Erdös, Yau and Yin. Moreover we investigate families of covariance matrices as well.

New Berry-Esseen bounds for non-linear functionals of Poisson random measures

This paper deals with the quantitative normal approximation of non-linear functionals of Poisson random measures, where the quality is measured by the Kolmogorov distance. Combining Stein's method with the Malliavin calculus of variations on the Poisson space, we derive a bound, which is strictly smaller than what is available in the literature. This is applied to sequences of multiple integrals and sequences of Poisson functionals having a finite chaotic expansion. This leads to new Berry-Esseen bounds in de Jong's theorem for degenerate U-statistics. Moreover, geometric functionals of intersection processes of Poisson $k$-flats, random graph statistics of the Boolean model and non-linear functionals of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck-Lévy processes are considered.

On rates of convergence in the Curie-Weiss-Potts model with external field

In the present paper we obtain rates of convergence for the limit theorems of the density vector in the Curie-Weiss-Potts model via Stein's Method of exchangeable pairs. Our results include Kolmogorov bounds for multivariate normal approximation in the whole domain $β\geq 0$ and $h\geq 0$, where $β$ is the inverse temperature and $h$ an exterior field. In this model, the critical line $β= β_c(h)$ is explicitly known and corresponds to a first order transition. We include rates of convergence for non-Gaussian approximations at the extremity of the critical line of the model.

Phase transitions for rates of convergence in the Blume-Emery-Griffiths model

We derive rates of convergence for limit theorems that reveal the intricate structure of the phase transitions in a mean-field version of the Blume-Emery-Griffith model. The theorems consist of scaling limits for the total spin. The model depends on the inverse temperature $β$ and the interaction strength $K$. The rates of convergence results are obtained as $(β,K)$ converges along appropriate sequences $(β_n,K_n)$ to points belonging to various subsets of the phase diagram which include a curve of second-order points and a tricritical point. We apply Stein's method for normal and non-normal approximation avoiding the use of transforms and supplying bounds, such as those of Berry-Esseen quality, on approximation error. We observe an additional phase transition phenomenon in the sense that depending on how fast $K_n$ and $β_n$ are converging to points in various subsets of the phase diagram, different rates of convergences to one and the same limiting distribution occur.

Edge fluctuations of eigenvalues of Wigner matrices

We establish a moderate deviation principle (MDP) for the number of eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix in an interval close to the edge of the spectrum. Moreover we prove a MDP for the $i$th largest eigenvalue close to the edge. The proof relies on fine asymptotics of the variance of the eigenvalue counting function of GUE matrices due to Gustavsson. The extension to large families of Wigner matrices is based on the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem. Possible extensions to other random matrix ensembles are commented.

Moderate deviations via cumulants

The purpose of the present paper is to establish moderate deviation principles for a rather general class of random variables fulfilling certain bounds of the cumulants. We apply a celebrated lemma of the theory of large deviations probabilities due to Rudzkis, Saulis and Statulevicius. The examples of random objects we treat include dependency graphs, subgraph-counting statistics in Erdős-Rényi random graphs and $U$-statistics. Moreover, we prove moderate deviation principles for certain statistics appearing in random matrix theory, namely characteristic polynomials of random unitary matrices as well as the number of particles in a growing box of random determinantal point processes like the number of eigenvalues in the GUE or the number of points in Airy, Bessel, and $\sin$ random point fields.

Moderate deviations in random graphs and Bernoulli random matrices

We prove a moderate deviation principle for subgraph count statistics of Erdos-Renyi random graphs. This is equivalent in showing a moderate deviation principle for the trace of a power of a Bernoulli random matrix. It is done via an estimation of the log-Laplace transform and the Gaertner-Ellis theorem. We obtain upper bounds on the upper tail probabilities of the number of occurrences of small subgraphs. The method of proof is used to show supplemental moderate deviation principles for a class of symmetric statistics, including non-degenerate U-statistics with independent or Markovian entries.
