Atomic Origin of Annealing Embrittlement in Metallic Glasses

An atomistic understanding of annealing embrittlement is a longstanding issue for metallic glasses, which is still lacking due to the insurmountable gap between the thermal history of atomic models and laboratory-made samples. Here, based on a thermal-cycling annealing method that can vary the effective quenching rate over ten orders of magnitude, we perform an atomistic study of the ductile-brittle transition in a ternary model metallic glass, which can be keyed to the annealing embrittlement in bulk metallic glasses. We reveal that thermal annealing can effectively obliterate thermally active-able "defects", which are abundant in the hyper-quenched and ductile glass but gives rise to strain-created shear events in the well-annealed and brittle glass. While the activation of the strain-created events eventually causes single shear banding, other local structural disruptions can be "healed" by the same type of events upon stress reversal, thereby hindering shear band broadening or multiplication, and resulting in annealing embrittlement.

A fully-nonlinear flow and quermassintegral inequalities in the sphere

This expository paper presents the current knowledge of particular fully nonlinear curvature flows with local forcing term, so-called locally constrained curvature flows. We focus on the spherical ambient space. The flows are designed to preserve a quermassintegral and to de-/increase the other quermassintegrals. The convergence of this flow to a round sphere would settle the full set of quermassintegral inequalities for convex domains of the sphere, but a full proof is still missing. Here we collect what is known and hope to attract wide attention to this interesting problem.

Atomic nonaffinity as a predictor of plasticity in amorphous solids

Structural heterogeneity of amorphous solids present difficult challenges that stymie the prediction of plastic events, which are intimately connected to their mechanical behavior. Based on a perturbation analysis of the potential energy landscape, we derive the atomic nonaffinity as an indicator with intrinsic orientation, which quantifies the contribution of an individual atom to the total nonaffine modulus of the system. We find that the atomic nonaffinity can efficiently characterize the locations of the shear transformation zones, with a predicative capacity comparable to the best indicators. More importantly, the atomic nonaffinity, combining the sign of third order derivative of energy with respect to coordinates, reveals an intrinsic softest shear orientation. By analyzing the angle between this orientation and the shear loading direction, it is possible to predict the protocol-dependent response of plastic events. Employing the new method, the distribution of orientations of shear transformation zones in a model two-dimensional amorphous solids can be measured. The resulting plastic events can be understood from a simple model of independent plastic events occurring at variously oriented shear transformation zones. These results shed light on the characterization and prediction of the mechanical response of amorphous solids.

Revealing Rejuvenated Disorder States towards Crystallization in a Supercooled Metallic Glass-Forming Liquid

We report a metadynamics simulation study of crystallization in a deep undercooled metallic glass-forming liquid by developing appropriate collective variables. Through a combined analysis of free energy surface (FES) and atomic-level behaviors, a picture of an abnormal-endothermic crystallization process is revealed: rejuvenated disorder states with less local fivefold-symmetry and fast dynamics form firstly by changing the local chemical order around Cu atoms, which then act as the precursor for the nucleation of well-ordered crystallites. This process reflects a complex energy landscape with well-separated glassy and crystal basins, giving rise to the direct evidence of intrinsic frustration against crystallization in deep undercooled metallic glass forming liquids. Moreover, the rejuvenated disorder states with distinct physical behaviors offer great opportunities to tailor the performances of metallic glass by controlling the thermal history of a metallic melt.

Soft mode parameter as an indicator for the activation energy spectra in metallic glass

The activation energy (E_A) spectra of potential energy landscape (PEL) provides a convenient perspective for interpreting complex phenomena in amorphous materials; however, the link between the E_A spectra and other physical properties in metallic glasses is still mysterious. By systematically probing the E_A spectra for numerous metallic glass samples with distinct local geometric ordering, which correspond to broad processing histories, it is found that the shear modulus of the samples are strongly correlated with the arithmetic mean of the E_A spectra rather than with the local geometrical ordering. Furthermore, we studied the correlation of the obtained E_A spectra and various well-established physical parameters. The outcome of our research clearly demonstrates that the soft mode parameter Ψ and the E_A spectrum are correlated; therefore, it could be a good indicator of metallic glass properties and sheds important light on the structure-property relationship in metallic glass through the medium of PEL.

Elastic avalanches reveal marginal behaviour in amorphous solids

Mechanical deformation of amorphous solids can be described as consisting of an elastic part in which the stress increases linearly with strain, up to a yield point at which the solid either fractures or starts deforming plastically. It is well established, however, that the apparent linearity of stress with strain is actually a proxy for a much more complex behavior, with a microscopic plasticity that is reflected in diverging nonlinear elastic coefficients. Very generally, the complex structure of the energy landscape is expected to induce a singular response to small perturbations. In the athermal quasistatic regime, this response manifests itself in the form of a scale free plastic activity. The distribution of the corresponding avalanches should reflect, according to theoretical mean field calculations (Franz and Spigler, Phys. Rev. E., 2017, 95, 022139), the geometry of phase space in the vicinity of a typical local minimum. In this work, we characterize this distribution for simple models of glass forming systems, and we find that its scaling is compatible with the mean field predictions for systems above the jamming transition. These systems exhibit marginal stability, and scaling relations that hold in the stationary state are examined and confirmed in the elastic regime. By studying the respective influence of system size and age, we suggest that marginal stability is systematic in the thermodynamic limit.

The correlation between fragility, density and atomic interaction in glass-forming liquids

The fragility, that controls the temperature-dependent viscous properties of liquids as the glass transition is approached, in various glass-forming liquids with different atomic interactions and densities is investigated by molecular dynamic simulations. We show the landscape of fragility in purely repulsive systems can be separated into three regions with qualitatively disparate dynamic behaviors, suggesting that the density plays an unexpected role for understanding the repulsive steepness dependence of fragility. Furthermore, the vastly dissimilar influences of attractive interaction on fragility could be estimated from the structural properties of related zero-temperature glasses

Gigahertz Dielectric Polarization of Single-atom Niobium Substituted in Graphitic layers

We have synthesized two Nb@C composites with an order of magnitude difference in the density of single-atom niobium substituted into graphitic layers. The concentration and sites of single-atom Nb are identified using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and density functional theory. Comparing the complex permittivity spectra show that the representative dielectric resonance at ~16 GHz originates from the intrinsic polarization of single-atom Nb sites, confirmed by theoretical simulations. The single-atom dielectric resonance represents the physical limit of the electromagnetic response of condensed matter, and thus might open up a new avenue for designing electromagnetic wave absorption materials. Single-atom resonance also has important implications in understanding the correlation between the macroscopic dielectric behaviors and the atomic-scale structural origin.

A mean curvature type flow in space forms

In this article, we introduce a new type of mean curvature flow for bounded star-shaped domains in space forms and prove its longtime existence, exponential convergence without any curvature assumption. Along this flow, the enclosed volume is a constant and the surface area evolves monotonically. Moreover, for a bounded convex domain in R n+1, the quermassintegrals evolve monotonically along the flow which allows us to prove a class of Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities of quermassintegrals.

Entropy and a convergence theorem for Gauss curvature flow in high dimension

In this paper we prove uniform regularity estimates for the normalized Gauss curvature flow in higher dimensions. The convergence of solutions in $C^\infty$-topology to a smooth strictly convex soliton as $t$ approaches to infinity is obtained as a consequence of these estimates together with an earlier result of Andrews. The estimates are established via the study of a new entropy functional for the flow.

Field emission from atomically thin edges of reduced graphene oxide

Point sources exhibit low threshold electron emission due to local field enhancement at the tip. The development and implementation of tip emitters have been hampered by the need to position them sufficiently apart to achieve field enhancement, limiting the number of emission sites and therefore the overall current. Here we report low threshold field (< 0.1V/um) emission of multiple electron beams from atomically thin edges of reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Field emission microscopy (FEM) measurements show evidence for interference from emission sites that are separated by a few nanometers, suggesting that the emitted electron beams may be coherent. Based on our high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and simulation results, field emission from the rGO edge is attributed to a stable and unique aggregation of oxygen groups in the form of cyclic edge ethers. Such closely spaced electron beams from rGO offer prospects for novel applications and understanding the physics of linear electron sources.

Convexity estimates for level sets of quasiconcave solutions to fully nonlinear elliptic equations

We establish a geometric lower bound for the principal curvature of the level surfaces of solutions to $F(D^2u, Du, u, x)=0$ in convex ring domains, under a refined structural condition introduced by Bianchini-Longinetti-Salani in \cite{BLS}. We also prove a constant rank theorem for the second fundamental form of the convex level surfaces of these solutions.

Partial Legendre transforms of non-linear equations

The partial Legendre transform of a non-linear elliptic differential equation is shown to be another non-linear elliptic differential equation. In particular, the partial Legendre transform of the Monge-Ampère equation is another equation of Monge-Ampère type. In 1+1 dimensions, this can be applied to obtain uniform estimates to all orders for the degenerate Monge-Ampère equation with boundary data satisfying a strict convexity condition.
