Progress on the Construction of the 100 MeV / 100 kW Electron Linac for the NSC KIPT Neutron Source

IHEP, China is constructing a 100 MeV / 100 kW electron Linac for NSC KIPT, Ukraine. This linac will be used as the driver of a neutron source based on a subcritical assembly. In 2012, the injector part of the accelerator was pre-installed as a testing facility in the experimental hall #2 of IHEP. The injector beam and key hardware testing results were met the design goal. Recently, the injector testing facility was disassembled and all of the components for the whole accelerator have been shipped to Ukraine from China by ocean shipping. The installation of the whole machine in KIPT will be started in June, 2013. The construction progress, the design and testing results of the injector beam and key hardware are presented.

Studies on an S-band Bunching System with Hybrid Buncher

Generally, a standard bunching system is composed by a SW pre-buncher, a TW buncher and a standard accelerating section. However, there is one way to simplify the whole system to some extent by using the hybrid buncher, which is a combined structure of the SW pre-buncher and the TW buncher. Here the beam dynamics studies on an S-band bunching system with the hybrid buncher is presented, simulation results shows that similar beam performance can be obtained at the linac exit by using this kind of bunching system rather than the standard one. In the meantime, the structure design of the hybrid buncher is also described. Furthermore, the standard accelerating section can also be integrated with the hybrid buncher, which can further simplify the usual bunching system and lower the construction cost.

Error and jitter effect studies on the SLED for BEPCII-linac

RF pulse compressor is a device to convert a long RF pulse to a short one with much higher peak RF magnitude. SLED can be regarded as the earliest RF pulse compressor used in large scale linear accelerators. It is widely studied around the world and applied in the BEPC and BEPCII linac for many years. During the routine operation, the error and jitter effects will deteriorate the SLED performance either on the output electromagnetic wave amplitude or phase. The error effects mainly include the frequency drift induced by cooling water temperature variation and the frequency/Q0/β unbalances between the two energy storage cavities caused by mechanical fabrication or microwave tuning. The jitter effects refer to the PSK switching phase and time jitters. In this paper, we re-derived the generalized formulae for the conventional SLED used in the BEPCII linac. At last, the error and jitter effects on the SLED performance are investigated.

RF-thermal-structural-RF coupled analysis on the travelling wave disk-loaded accelerating structure

Travelling wave (TW) disk-loaded accelerating structure is one of the key components in normal conducting (NC) linear accelerators, and has been studied for many years. In the design process, usually after the dimensions of each cell and the two couplers are finalized, the structure is fabricated and tuned, and then the whole structure characteristics can be measured by the vector network analyzer. Before the structure fabrication, the whole structure characteristics are less simulated limited by the available computer capability. In this paper, we described the method to do the RF-thermal-structural-RF coupled analysis on the TW disk-loaded structure with one single PC. In order to validate our method, we first analyzed and compared our RF simulation results on the 3m long BEPCII structure with the corresponding experimental results, which shows very good consistency. Finally, the RF-thermal-structure-RF coupled analysis results on the 1.35m long NSC KIPT linac accelerating structure are presented.
