Ultrahigh-Energy Gamma-ray Emission Associated with Black Hole-Jet Systems

Black holes (BH), one of the most intriguing objects in the universe, can manifest themselves through electromagnetic radiation initiated by the accretion flow. Some stellar-mass BHs drive relativistic jets when accreting matter from their companion stars, forming microquasars. Non-thermal emission from the radio to tera-electronvolt (TeV) gamma-ray band has been observed from microquasars, indicating the acceleration of relativistic particles. Here we report detection of four microquasars (SS 433, V4641 Sgr, GRS 1915+105, MAXI J1820+070) of spectrum extending to the ultrahigh-energy (UHE; photon energy $E>100$ TeV) band and one microquasar (Cygnus X-1) of spectrum approaching 100 TeV, using the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Notably, the total emission associated with SS 433 cannot be interpreted with a single leptonic component. In the UHE band, its emission is in spatial coincidence with a giant atomic cloud, which is consistent with a hadronic origin. An elongated source is discovered from V4641 Sgr with the spectrum continuing up to 800 TeV. The detection of UHE gamma rays demonstrates that accreting BHs and their environments can operate as extremely efficient accelerators of particles out of 1 peta-electronvolt (PeV), suggesting microquasars to be important contributors to Galactic cosmic rays especially around the `knee' region.

Application of the correlated B-spline basis functions to the leading relativistic and QED corrections of helium

B-spline functions have been widely used in computational atomic physics. Different from the traditional B-spline basis (a simple product of two B-splines), the recently developed correlated B-spline basis functions(C-BSBF), in which the interelectronic coordinate $r_{12}$ is included explicitly, have greatly improved the computational accuracy of polarizability [S. J. Yang \textit{et al}., Phys. Rev. A \textbf{95}, 062505 (2017)] and bethe logarithm [ S. J. Yang \textit{et al}., Phys. Rev. A \textbf{100}, 042509 (2019)] for singlet states of helium. Here, we report the extension of the C-BSBF to the leading relativistic and QED correction calculations for energy levels of the $1\,^1S$, $2\,^1S$, $2\,^3S$, and $3\,^3S$ states of helium. The relativistic kinetic term $p_{1}^{4}$, contact potential $δ^{3}(r_{1})$, $δ^{3}(r_{12})$ and Araki-Sucher correction $\langle 1/r_{12}^{3} \rangle$ are calculated by using the global operator method, in which $r_{12}^n$ and $r_{12}^n\ln r_{12}$ involved are calculated with the generalization of Laplace's expansions. The obtained values for the ground state are $δE_{rel}/α^{2}=-$1.951 754 7(2) and $δE_{QED}/α^{3}=$57.288 165(2), consistent with previous results, which opens the possibility of calculating higher-order relativistic and QED effects using the C-BSBF.

Precision calculation of hyperfine structure of $^{7,9}$Be$^{2+}$ ions

The hyperfine structures of the $2\,^3\!S_1$ and $2\,^3\!P_J$ states of the $^7$Be$^{2+}$ and $^9$Be$^{2+}$ ions are investigated within the framework of the nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics (NRQED). The uncertainties of present hyperfine splitting results of $^9$Be$^{2+}$ are in the order of several tens of ppm, where two orders of magnitude improvement over the previous theory and experiment values has been achieved. The contribution of nuclear electric quadrupole moment to hyperfine splitting of $^7$Be$^{2+}$ has been studied. A scheme for determining the properties of Be nuclei in terms of Zemach radius or the electric quadrupole moment based on precise spectra is proposed, and it opens a new window for the study of Be nuclei.

Ultrahigh-energy diffuse gamma-ray emission from cosmic-ray interactions with medium surrounding acceleration sources

The diffuse $γ$-ray spectrum at sub-PeV energy region has been measured for the first time by the Tibet-AS$γ$ experiment. It will shed new light on the understanding of origin and propagation of Galactic cosmic rays at very high energies. It has been pointed out that the traditional cosmic ray propagation model based on low energy measurements undershoot the new data, and modifications of the model with new ingredients or alternative propagation framework is required. In this work, we propose that the hadronic interactions between freshly accelerated cosmic rays and the medium surrounding the sources, which was neglected in the traditional model, can naturally account for the Tibet-AS$γ$ diffuse emission. We show that this scenario gives a consistent description of other secondary species such as the positron spectrum, the boron-to-carbon ratio, and the antiproton-to-proton ratio. As a result, the electron spectrum above 10 TeV will have a hardening due to this secondary component, which may be tested by future measurements.

Precision spectroscopy of the hydrogen molecular ions HD$^+$

Expectation values of the Breit operators and the $Q$ terms are calculated for HD$^+$ with the vibrational number $v=0-4$ and the total angular momentum $L=0-4$. Relativistic and radiative corrections to some ro-vibrational transition frequencies are determined. Numerical uncertainty in $R_{\infty}α^2$ order correction is reduced to sub kHz or smaller. Our work provides an independent verification of Korobov's calculations [Phys. Rev. A {\bf74}, 052506 (2006); {\bf77}, 022509 (2008)].
