Cosmic anisotropic doomsday in Bianchi type I universes

In order to investigate if the anisotropy of the spacetime may induce future singularities at a finite value of the cosmic time on the evolution of cosmological models, we study vacuum and non-vacuum Bianchi type I spacetimes exhibiting such future singularities. We show that in the case of Kasner vacuum cosmologies the spacetime may rip itself apart in a finite time, and only in the direction corresponding to the unique scale factor which diverges at this finite value of the cosmic time. The other two directional scale factors and the average scale factor do not diverge and tend to zero at this time, while the directional and average expansion rates also become infinite. Due to the absence of the matter content this anisotropic future singularity is induced by the shear scalar, which also blows up at this time. We call such a singularity "Vacuum Rip". For non-vacuum solutions we discuss fully anisotropic Bianchi type I spacetimes filled with a stiff fluid and ellipsoidal (axisymmetric) cosmological models filled with matter with isotropic and anisotropic barotropic pressure, and characterized by $σ/θ=const$, where $σ$ and $θ$ are the shear scalar and the expansion scalar respectively.

Emergent Cosmology, Inflation and Dark Energy

A new class of gravity-matter models defined in terms of two independent non-Riemannian volume forms (alternative generally covariant integration measure densities) on the space-time manifold are studied in some detail. These models involve an additional $R^2$ (square of the scalar curvature) term as well as scalar matter field potentials of appropriate form so that the pertinent action is invariant under global Weyl-scale symmetry. Scale invariance is spontaneously broken upon integration of the equations of motion for the auxiliary volume-form degrees of freedom. After performing transition to the physical Einstein frame we obtain: (i) An effective potential for the scalar field with two flat regions which allows for a unified description of both early universe inflation as well as of present dark energy epoch; (ii) For a definite parameter range the model possesses a non-singular "emergent universe" solution which describes an initial phase of evolution that precedes the inflationary phase; (iii) For a reasonable choice of the parameters the present model conforms to the Planck Collaboration data.

Extended QCD(2) from dimensional projection of QCD(4)

We study an extended QCD model in (1+1) dimensions obtained from QCD in 4D by compactifying two spatial dimensions and projecting onto the zero-mode subspace. We work out this model in the large $N_c$ limit and using light cone gauge but keeping the equal-time quantization. This system is found to induce a dynamical mass for transverse gluons -- adjoint scalars in QCD(2), and to undergo a chiral symmetry breaking with the full quark propagators yielding non-tachyonic, dynamical quark masses, even in the chiral limit. We study quark-antiquark bound states which can be classified in this model by their properties under Lorentz transformations inherited from 4D. The scalar and pseudoscalar sectors of the theory are examined and in the chiral limit a massless ground state for pseudoscalars is revealed with a wave function generalizing the so called 't Hooft pion solution.

Semiclassical Gauge Theories

We study the properties of a non-abelian gauge theory subjected to a gauge invariant constraint given by the classical equations of motion. The constraint is not imposed by hand, but appears naturally when we study a particular type of local gauge transformations. In this way, all standard techniques to treat gauge theories are available. We will show that this theory lives at one-loop. Also this model retains some quantum characteristic of the usual non-abelian gauge theories as asymptotic freedom.
