Painlevé I double scaling limit in the cubic random matrix model

We obtain the double scaling asymptotic behavior of the recurrence coefficients and the partition function at the critical point of the $N\times N$ Hermitian random matrix model with cubic potential. We prove that the recurrence coefficients admit an asymptotic expansion in powers of $N^{-2/5}$, and in the leading order the asymptotic behavior of the recurrence coefficients is given by a Boutroux tronquée solution to the Painlevé I equation. We also obtain the double scaling limit of the partition function, and we prove that the poles of the tronquée solution are limits of zeros of the partition function. The tools used include the Riemann--Hilbert approach and the Deift--Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method for the corresponding family of complex orthogonal polynomials and their recurrence coefficients, together with the Toda equation in the parameter space.

Two-Point Correlation Functions and Universality for the Zeros of Systems of SO(n+1)-invariant Gaussian Random Polynomials

We study the two-point correlation functions for the zeroes of systems of $SO(n+1)$-invariant Gaussian random polynomials on $\mathbb{RP}^n$ and systems of ${\rm isom}(\mathbb{R}^n)$-invariant Gaussian analytic functions. Our result reflects the same "repelling," "neutral," and "attracting" short-distance asymptotic behavior, depending on the dimension, as was discovered in the complex case by Bleher, Shiffman, and Zelditch. For systems of the ${\rm isom}(\mathbb{R}^n)$-invariant Gaussian analytic functions we also obtain a fast decay of correlations at long distances. We then prove that the correlation function for the ${\rm isom}(\mathbb{R}^n)$-invariant Gaussian analytic functions is "universal," describing the scaling limit of the correlation function for the restriction of systems of the $SO(k+1)$-invariant Gaussian random polynomials to any $n$-dimensional $C^2$ submanifold $M \subset \mathbb{RP}^k$. This provides a real counterpart to the universality results that were proved in the complex case by Bleher, Shiffman, and Zelditch. (Our techniques also apply to the complex case, proving a special case of the universality results of Bleher, Shiffman, and Zelditch.)

Counting Zeros of Harmonic Rational Functions and Its Application to Gravitational Lensing

General Relativity gives that finitely many point masses between an observer and a light source create many images of the light source. Positions of these images are solutions of $r(z)=\bar{z},$ where $r(z)$ is a rational function. We study the number of solutions to $p(z) = \bar{z}$ and $r(z) = \bar{z},$ where $p(z)$ and $r(z)$ are polynomials and rational functions, respectively. Upper and lower bounds were previously obtained by Khavinson-Świcatek, Khavinson-Neumann, and Petters. Between these bounds, we show that any number of simple zeros allowed by the Argument Principle occurs and nothing else occurs, off of a proper real algebraic set. If $r(z) = \bar{z}$ describes an $n$-point gravitational lens, we determine the possible numbers of generic images.

Nearest Neighbor Distances on a Circle: Multidimensional Case

We study the distances, called spacings, between pairs of neighboring energy levels for the quantum harmonic oscillator. Specifically, we consider all energy levels falling between E and E+1, and study how the spacings between these levels change for various choices of E, particularly when E goes to infinity. Primarily, we study the case in which the spring constant is a badly approximable vector. We first give the proof by Boshernitzan-Dyson that the number of distinct spacings has a uniform bound independent of E. Then, if the spring constant has components forming a basis of an algebraic number field, we show that, when normalized up to a unit, the spacings are from a finite set. Moreover, in the specific case that the field has one fundamental unit, the probability distribution of these spacings behaves quasiperiodically in log E. We conclude by studying the spacings in the case that the spring constant is not badly approximable, providing examples for which the number of distinct spacings is unbounded.

Orthogonal polynomials in the normal matrix model with a cubic potential

We consider the normal matrix model with a cubic potential. The model is ill-defined, and in order to reguralize it, Elbau and Felder introduced a model with a cut-off and corresponding system of orthogonal polynomials with respect to a varying exponential weight on the cut-off region on the complex plane. In the present paper we show how to define orthogonal polynomials on a specially chosen system of infinite contours on the complex plane, without any cut-off, which satisfy the same recurrence algebraic identity that is asymptotically valid for the orthogonal polynomials of Elbau and Felder. The main goal of this paper is to develop the Riemann-Hilbert (RH) approach to the orthogonal polynomials under consideration and to obtain their asymptotic behavior on the complex plane as the degree $n$ of the polynomial goes to infinity. As the first step in the RH approach, we introduce an auxiliary vector equilibrium problem for a pair of measures $(μ_1,μ_2)$ on the complex plane. We then formulate a $3\times 3$ matrix valued RH problem for the orthogonal polynomials in hand, and we apply the nonlinear steepest descent method of Deift-Zhou to the asymptotic analysis of the RH problem. The central steps in our study are a sequence of transformations of the RH problem, based on the equilibrium vector measure $(μ_1,μ_2)$, and the construction of a global parametrix. The main result of this paper is a derivation of the large $n$ asymptotics of the orthogonal polynomials on the whole complex plane. We prove that the distribution of zeros of the orthogonal polynomials converges to the measure $μ_1$, the first component of the equilibrium measure. We also obtain analytical results for the measure $μ_1$ relating it to the distribution of eigenvalues in the normal matrix model which is uniform in a domain bounded by a simple closed curve.

Large n limit of Gaussian random matrices with external source, Part III: Double scaling limit

We consider the double scaling limit in the random matrix ensemble with an external source $\frac{1}{Z_n} e^{-n \Tr({1/2}M^2 -AM)} dM$ defined on $n\times n$ Hermitian matrices, where $A$ is a diagonal matrix with two eigenvalues $\pm a$ of equal multiplicities. The value $a=1$ is critical since the eigenvalues of $M$ accumulate as $n \to \infty$ on two intervals for $a > 1$ and on one interval for $0 < a < 1$. These two cases were treated in Parts I and II, where we showed that the local eigenvalue correlations have the universal limiting behavior known from unitary random matrix ensembles. For the critical case $a=1$ new limiting behavior occurs which is described in terms of Pearcey integrals, as shown by Brézin and Hikami, and Tracy and Widom. We establish this result by applying the Deift/Zhou steepest descent method to a $3 \times 3$-matrix valued Riemann-Hilbert problem which involves the construction of a local parametrix out of Pearcey integrals. We resolve the main technical issue of matching the local Pearcey parametrix with a global outside parametrix by modifying an underlying Riemann surface.

Large $n$ limit of Gaussian random matrices with external source, part II

We continue the study of the Hermitian random matrix ensemble with external source $\frac{1}{Z_n} e^{-n \Tr({1/2}M^2 -AM)} dM$ where $A$ has two distinct eigenvalues $\pm a$ of equal multiplicity. This model exhibits a phase transition for the value $a=1$, since the eigenvalues of $M$ accumulate on two intervals for $a > 1$, and on one interval for $0 < a < 1$. The case $a > 1$ was treated in part I, where it was proved that local eigenvalue correlations have the universal limiting behavior which is known for unitarily invariant random matrices, that is, limiting eigenvalue correlations are expressed in terms of the sine kernel in the bulk of the spectrum, and in terms of the Airy kernel at the edge. In this paper we establish the same results for the case $0 < a < 1$. As in part I we apply the Deift/Zhou steepest descent analysis to a $3 \times 3$-matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem. Due to the different structure of an underlying Riemann surface, the analysis includes an additional step involving a global opening of lenses, which is a new phenomenon in the steepest descent analysis of Riemann-Hilbert problems.
