Tunnelling in Quantum Cosmology: WKB vs SWKB

The WKB approximation is a standard tool for studying tunnelling problems in quantum cosmology. We compare this method to the Supersymmetric WKB (SWKB) applied to a closed FRW minisuperspace model. We consider the transition from a dust towards a dark energy-dominated epoch can be explained by a generalized Chaplygin gas. Using analytic approximations for the superpotential (power-series and a Picard approximation), we derive closed-form SWKB tunnelling expressions and compute transmission probabilities as functions of the Chaplygin parameters $A$, $B$ and $α$. Numerical root-finding locates classical turning points and numerical integration allows comparison with standard WKB results. We find that SWKB and WKB agree when the WKB validity condition holds, while the SWKB yields systematically larger (and plausibly more accurate) tunnelling probabilities for parameter values where the WKB assumptions break down. The results support the SWKB as a useful complementary approach for barrier-transmission studies in quantum cosmology.

A model of polymer gravitational waves: theory and some possible observational consequences

We propose a polymer quantization scheme to derive the effective propagation of gravitational waves on a classical Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetime. These waves, which may originate from a high energy source, are a consequence of the dynamics of the gravitational field in a linearized low-energy regime. A novel method of deriving the effective Hamiltonian of the system is applied to overcome the challenge of polymer quantizing a time-dependent Hamiltonian. Using such a Hamiltonian, we derive the effective equations of motion and show that (i) the form of the waves is modified, (ii) the speed of the waves depends on their frequencies, and (iii) quantum effects become more apparent as waves traverse longer distances.

Role of Gauss-Bonnet corrections in a DGP brane gravitational collapse

An Oppenheimer-Snyder (OS)-type collapse is considered for a Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) brane, whereas a Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term is provided for the bulk. We study the combined effect of the DGP induced gravity plus the GB curvature, regarding any modification of the general relativistic OS dynamics. Our paper has a twofold objective. On the one hand, we investigate the nature of singularities that may arise at the collapse end state. It is shown that all dynamical scenarios for the contracting brane would end in one of the following cases, depending on conditions imposed: either a central shell-focusing singularity or what we designate as a "sudden collapse singularity." On the other hand, we also study the deviations of the exterior spacetime from the standard Schwarzschild geometry, which emerges in our modified OS scenario. Our purpose is to investigate whether a black hole always forms regarding this brane world model. We find situations where a naked singularity emerges instead.

DBI Galileon inflation in the light of Planck 2015

In this work we consider a DBI Galileon (DBIG) inflationary model and constrain its parameter space with the Planck 2015 and BICEP2/Keck array and Planck (BKP) joint analysis data by means of a potential independent analysis. We focus our attention on inflationary solutions characterized by a constant or varying sound speed as well as warp factor. We impose bounds on stringy aspects of the model, such as the warp factor $\left(f\right)$ and the induced gravity parameter $\left(\tilde{m}\right)$. We study the parameter space of the model and find that the tensor-to-scalar ratio can be as low as $r\simeq6\times10^{-4}$ and inflation happens to be at GUT scale. In addition, we obtain the tilt of the tensor power spectrum and test the standard inflationary consistency relation $\left(r=-8n_{t}\right)$ against the latest bounds from the combined results of BKP+Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Waves Observatory (LIGO), and find that DBIG inflation predicts a red spectral index for the tensor power spectrum.

Exact Cosmological Solutions in Modified Brans-Dicke Theory

In this paper, we obtain exact cosmological vacuum solutions for an extended FLRW homogenous and isotropic Brans-Dicke (BD) universe in five dimensions for all values of the curvature index. Then, by employing the equations associated to a modified Brans-Dicke theory (MBDT) [1], we construct the physics on a four-dimensional hypersurface. We show that the induced matter obeys the equation of state of a fluid of a barotropic type. We discuss the properties of such an induced matter for some values of the equation of state parameter and analyze in detail their corresponding solutions. To illustrate the cosmological behaviors of the solutions, we contrast our solutions with those present the standard Brans-Dicke theory. We retrieve that, in MBDT scenario, it is impossible to find a physically acceptable solution associated to the negative curvature for both the dust-dominated and radiation-dominated universes. However, for a spatially flat and closed universes, we argue that our obtained solutions are more general than those associated to the standard BD theory and, moreover, they contain a few classes of solutions which have no analog in the BD cosmology. For those particular cases, we further compare the results with those extracted in the context of the induced matter theory (IMT) and general relativity (GR). Furthermore, we discuss in detail the time behaviors of the cosmological quantities and compare them with recent observational data. We find a favorable range for the deceleration parameter associated to a matter-dominated spatially flat universe (for the late times) which is compatible with recent corresponding observational results.

Non-Gaussianity in multiple three-form field inflation

In this work, we present a method for implementing the $δN$ formalism to study the primordial non-Gaussianity produced in multiple three-form field inflation. Using a dual description relating three-form fields to noncanonical scalar fields, and employing existing results, we produce expressions for the bispectrum of the curvature perturbation in terms of three-form quantities. We study the bispectrum generated in a two three-form field inflationary scenario for a particular potential that for suitable values of the parameters was found in earlier work to give values of the spectral index and ratio of tensor to scalar perturbations compatible with current bounds. We calculate the reduced bispectrum for this model, finding an amplitude in equilateral and orthogonal configurations of ${\cal O}(1)$ and in the squeezed limit of ${\cal O}(10^{-3})$. We confirm, therefore, that this three-form inflationary scenario is compatible with present observational constraints.

Non-slow-roll dynamics in $α-$attractors

In this paper we consider the $α-$attractor model and study inflation under a non-slow-roll dynamics. More precisely, we follow the approach recently proposed by Gong and Sasaki \cite{Gong:2015ypa} by means of assuming $N=N\left(ϕ\right)$. Within this framework we obtain a family of functions describing the local shape of the potential during inflation. We study a specific model and find an inflationary scenario predicting an attractor at $n_{s}\approx0.967$ and $r\approx5.5\times10^{-4}$. We further show that considering a non-slow-roll dynamics, the $α-$attractor model can be broaden to a wider class of models that remain compatible with value of $r<0.1$. We further explore the model parameter space with respect to large and small field inflation and conclude that the inflaton dynamics is connected to the $ α- $ parameter, which is also related to the Kähler manifold curvature in the supergravity (SUGRA) embedding of this model. We also comment on the stabilization of the inflaton's trajectory.

Improved dynamics and gravitational collapse of tachyon field coupled with a barotropic fluid

We consider a spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of a tachyon field with an inverse square potential, which is coupled with a barotropic fluid. By employing an holonomy correction imported from loop quantum cosmology, we analyse the dynamics of the collapse within a semiclassical description. Using a dynamical system approach, we find that the stable fixed points given by the standard general relativistic setting turn into saddle points in the present context. This provides a new dynamics in contrast to the black hole and naked singularities solutions appearing in the classical model. Our results suggest that classical singularities can be avoided by quantum gravity effects and are replaced by a bounce. By a thorough numerical studies we show that, depending on the barotropic parameter $γ$, there exists a class of solutions corresponding to either a fluid or a tachyon dominated regimes. Furthermore, for the case $γ\sim 1$, we find an interesting tracking behaviour between the tachyon and the fluid leading to a dust-like collapse. In addition, we show that, there exists a threshold scale which determines when an outward energy flux emerges, as a non-singular black hole is forming, at the corresponding collapse final stages.

Inflation in a two 3-form fields scenario

A setting constituted by $\mathbb{N}$ 3-form fields, without any direct interaction between them, minimally coupled to gravity, is introduced in this paper as a framework to study the early evolution of the universe. We focus particularly on the two 3-forms case. An inflationary scenario is found, emerging from the coupling to gravity. More concretely, the fields coupled in this manner exhibit a complex interaction, mediated by the time derivative of the Hubble parameter. Our investigation is supported by means of a suitable choice of potentials, employing numerical methods and analytical approximations. In more detail, the oscillations on the small field limit become correlated, and one field is intertwined with the other. In this type of solution, a varying sound speed is present, together with the generation of isocurvature perturbations. The mentioned features allow to consider an interesting model, to test against observation. It is subsequently shown how our results are consistent with current CMB data (viz.Planck and BICEP2).

Modified Brans-Dicke Theory in Arbitrary Dimensions

Within an algebraic framework, used to construct the induced-matter-theory (IMT) setting, in $(D+1)$-dimensional Brans-Dicke (BD) scenario, we obtain a modified BD theory (MBDT) in $D$ dimensions. Being more specific, from the $(D+1)$-dimensional field equations, a $D$--dimensional BD theory, bearing new features, is extracted by means of a suitable dimensional reduction onto a hypersurface orthogonal to the extra dimension. In particular, the BD scalar field in such $D$-dimensional theory has a self-interacting potential, which can be suitably interpreted as produced by the extra dimension. Subsequently, as an application to cosmology, we consider an extended spatially flat FLRW geometry in a $(D+1)$-dimensional space-time. After obtaining the power-law solutions in the bulk, we proceed to construct the corresponding physics, by means of the induced MBDT procedure, on the $D$-dimensional hypersurface. We then contrast the resulted solutions (for different phases of the universe) with those usually extracted from the conventional GR and BD theories in view of current ranges for cosmological parameters. We show that the induced perfect fluid background and the induced scalar potential can be employed, within some limits, for describing different epochs of the universe. Finally, we comment on the observational viability of such a model.

Noncommutative minisuperspace, gravity-driven acceleration and kinetic inflation

In this paper, we introduce a noncommutative version of the Brans-Dicke (BD) theory and obtain the Hamiltonian equations of motion for a spatially flat Friedmann--Lema\^ıtre--Robertson--Walker universe filled with a perfect fluid. We focus on the case where the scalar potential as well as the ordinary matter sector are absent. Then, we investigate gravity-driven acceleration and kinetic inflation in this noncommutative BD cosmology. In contrast to the commutative case, in which the scale factor and BD scalar field are in a power-law form, in the noncommutative case the power-law scalar factor is multiplied by a dynamical exponential warp factor. This warp factor depends on the noncommutative parameter as well as the momentum conjugate associated to the BD scalar field. We show that the BD scalar field and the scale factor effectively depend on the noncommutative parameter. For very small values of this parameter, we obtain an appropriate inflationary solution, which can overcome problems within BD standard cosmology in a more efficient manner. Furthermore, a graceful exit from an early acceleration epoch towards a decelerating radiation epoch is provided. For late times, due to the presence of the noncommutative parameter, we obtain a zero acceleration epoch, which can be interpreted as the coarse-grained explanation.

Gravitational collapse with tachyon field and barotropic fluid

A particular class of space-time, with a tachyon field, ϕ, and a barotropic fluid constituting the matter content, is considered herein as a model for gravitational collapse. For simplicity, the tachyon potential is assumed to be of inverse square form i.e., V(ϕ) \sim ϕ^{-2}. Our purpose, by making use of the specific kinematical features of the tachyon, which are rather different from a standard scalar field, is to establish the several types of asymptotic behavior that our matter content induces. Employing a dynamical system analysis, complemented by a thorough numerical study, we find classical solutions corresponding to a naked singularity or a black hole formation. In particular, there is a subset where the fluid and tachyon participate in an interesting tracking behaviour, depending sensitively on the initial conditions for the energy densities of the tachyon field and barotropic fluid. Two other classes of solutions are present, corresponding respectively, to either a tachyon or a barotropic fluid regime. Which of these emerges as dominant, will depend on the choice of the barotropic parameter, γ. Furthermore, these collapsing scenarios both have as final state the formation of a black hole.

Appeasing the Phantom Menace?

An induced gravity brane-world model is considered herein. A Gauss-Bonnet term is provided for the bulk, whereas phantom matter is present on the brane. It is shown that a combination of infra-red and ultra-violet modifications to general relativity replaces a big rip singularity: A sudden singularity emerges instead. Using current observational data, we also determine a range of values for the cosmic time corresponding to the sudden singularity occurrence.

Gauge field back-reaction in Born Infeld cosmologies

In this paper, we investigate the back-reaction of $U(1)$ gauge fields into a class of inflationary settings. To be more precise, we employ a Bianchi-I geometry (taken as an anisotropic perturbation of a flat FRW model) within two types of Born-Infeld theories. Firstly we consider pure Born-Infeld electromagnetism. For either a constant or a $b(ϕ)$ coupling, inflationary trajectories are modified but anisotropies increase; In particular, for the former coupling we find that a quadratic inflaton potential, within a constant ratio for the scalar and gauge energy densities, does not induce sufficient inflation, while in the latter the back-reaction in the cosmology determines (from the tensor-scalar ratio) a narrow range where inflation can occur. A Dirac-Born-Infeld framework is afterwards analysed in both non-relativistic and relativistic regimes. In the former, for different cases of the coupling (richer with respect to mere BI setups) between scalar and gauge sectors, we find that inflationary trajectories are modified, with anisotropy increasing or decreasing. In particular, a tachyonic solution is studied, allowing for a non standard ratio between scalar and gauge matter densities, enhancing sufficient inflation, but with the anisotropy increasing. For the relativistic limit, inflationary trajectories are also modified and anisotropies increase faster than in the non-relativistic limit. Finally we discuss how magnetic seed fields could evolve in these settings.

Quantisation of Parameters and the String Landscape Problem

We broaden the domain of application of Brustein and de Alwis recent paper [1], where they introduce a (dynamical) selection principle on the landscape of string solutions using FRW quantum cosmology. More precisely, we (i) explain how their analysis is based in choosing a restrictive range of parameters, thereby affecting the validity of the predictions extracted and (ii) subsequently provide a wider and cohesive description, regarding the probability distribution induced by quantum cosmological transition amplitudes. In addition, employing DeWitt's argument [2] for an initial condition on the wave function of the Universe, we found that the string and gravitational parameters become related through interesting expressions involving an integer, suggesting a quantisation relation for some of the involved parameters.

Chaos-order transition in Bianchi I non-Abelian Born-Infeld cosmology

We investigate the Bianchi I cosmology with the homogeneous SU(2) Yang-Mills field governed by the non-Abelian Born-Infeld action. Similar system with the standard Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) action is known to exhibit chaotic behavior induced by the Yang-Mills field. When the action is replaced by the Born-Infeld-type non-Abelian action (NBI), the chaos-order transition is observed in the high energy region. This is interpreted as a smothering effect due to (non-perturbative in $alpha'$) string corrections to the classical EYM action. We give a numerical evidence for the chaos-order transition, and present an analytical proof of regularity of color oscillations in the limit of strong Born-Infeld non-linearity. We also perform some general analysis of the Bianchi I NBI cosmology and derive an exact solution in the case when only the U(1) component of the Yang-Mills field is excited. Our new exact solution generalizes the Rosen solution to the Bianchi I Einstein-Maxwell cosmology to the U(1) Einstein-Born-Infeld theory.
