MICC: A tool for computing short distances in the curve complex

The complex of curves C(Sg)\mathcal{C}(S_g) of a closed orientable surface of genus g≥2g \geq 2 is the simplicial complex having its vertices, C0(Sg)\mathcal{C}^0(S_g), are isotopy classes of essential curves in SgS_g. Two vertices co-bound an edge of the 11-skeleton, C1(Sg)\mathcal{C}^1(S_g), if there are disjoint representatives in SgS_g. A metric is obtained on C0(Sg)\mathcal{C}^0(S_g) by assigning unit length to each edge of C1(Sg)\mathcal{C}^1(S_g). Thus, the distance between two vertices, d(v,w)d(v,w), corresponds to the length of a geodesic---a shortest edge-path between vv and ww in C1(Sg)\mathcal{C}^1 (S_g). Recently, Birman, Margalit and the second author introduced the concept of {\em initially efficient geodesics} in C1(Sg)\mathcal{C}^1(S_g) and used them to give a new algorithm for computing the distance between vertices. In this note we introduce the software package MICC ({\em Metric in the Curve Complex}), a partial implementation of the initially efficient geodesic algorithm. We discuss the mathematics underlying MICC and give applications. In particular, we give examples of distance four vertex pairs, for g=2g=2 and 3. Previously, there was only one known example, in genus 22, due to John Hempel.

Many-body interaction in fast soliton collisions

We study nn-pulse interaction in fast collisions of NN solitons of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation in the presence of generic weak nonlinear loss. We develop a reduced model that yields the contribution of nn-pulse interaction to the amplitude shift for collisions in the presence of weak (2m+1)(2m+1)-order loss, for any nn and mm. We first employ the reduced model and numerical solution of the perturbed NLS equation to analyze soliton collisions in the presence of septic loss (m=3)(m=3). Our calculations show that three-pulse interaction gives the dominant contribution to the collision-induced amplitude shift already in a full-overlap four-soliton collision, and that the amplitude shift strongly depends on the initial soliton positions. We then extend these results for a generic weak nonlinear loss of the form G(∣ψ∣2)ψG(|ψ|^{2})ψ, where ψψ is the physical field and GG is a Taylor polynomial of degree mcm_{c}. Considering mc=3m_{c}=3, as an example, we show that three-pulse interaction gives the dominant contribution to the amplitude shift in a six-soliton collision, despite the presence of low-order loss. Our study quantitatively demonstrates that nn-pulse interaction with high nn values plays a key role in fast collisions of NLS solitons in the presence of generic nonlinear loss. Moreover, the scalings of nn-pulse interaction effects with nn and mm and the strong dependence on initial soliton positions lead to complex collision dynamics, which is very different from the one observed in fast NLS soliton collisions in the presence of cubic loss.
