Arithmetic properties of 33-cycles of quadratic maps over Q\mathbb{Q}

It is shown that c=−29/16c=-29/16 is the unique rational number of smallest denominator, and the unique rational number of smallest numerator, for which the map fc(x)=x2+cf_c(x) = x^2+c has a rational periodic point of period 33. Several arithmetic conditions on the set of all such rational numbers cc and the rational orbits of fc(x)f_c(x) are proved. A graph on the numerators of the rational 33-periodic points of maps fcf_c is considered which reflects connections between solutions of norm equations from the cubic field of discriminant −23-23.

On the Hasse invariants of the Tate normal forms E5E_5 and E7E_7

A formula is proved for the number of linear factors over Fl\mathbb{F}_l of the Hasse invariant of the Tate normal form E5(b)E_5(b) for a point of order 55, as a polynomial in the parameter bb, in terms of the class number of the imaginary quadratic field K=Q(−l)K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-l}), proving a conjecture of the author from 2005. A similar theorem is proved for quadratic factors with constant term −1-1, and a theorem is stated for the number of quartic factors of a specific form in terms of the class number of Q(−5l)\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-5l}). These results are shown to imply a recent conjecture of Nakaya on the number of linear factors over Fl\mathbb{F}_l of the supersingular polynomial ssl(5∗)(X)ss_l^{(5*)}(X) corresponding to the Fricke group Γ0∗(5)Γ_0^*(5). The degrees and forms of the irreducible factors of the Hasse invariant of the Tate normal form E7E_7 for a point of order 77 are determined, which is used to show that the polynomial ssl(N∗)(X)ss_l^{(N*)}(X) for the group Γ0∗(N)Γ_0^*(N) has roots in Fl2\mathbb{F}_{l^2}, for any prime l≠Nl \neq N, when N∈{2,3,5,7}N \in \{2,3,5,7\}.

Solutions of diophantine equations as periodic points of pp-adic algebraic functions, III

All the periodic points of a certain algebraic function related to the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction r(τ)r(τ) are determined. They turn out to be 0,−1±520, \frac{-1 \pm \sqrt{5}}{2}, and the conjugates over Q\mathbb{Q} of the values r(wd/5)r(w_d/5), where wdw_d is one of a specific set of algebraic integers, divisible by the square of a prime divisor of 5, in the field Kd=Q(−d)K_d=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d}), as −d-d ranges over all negative quadratic discriminants for which (−d5)=+1\left(\frac{-d}{5}\right) = +1. This yields new insights on class numbers of orders in the fields KdK_d. Conjecture 1 of Part I is proved for the prime p=5p=5, showing that the ring class fields over fields of type KdK_d whose conductors are relatively prime to 55 coincide with the fields generated over Q\mathbb{Q} by the periodic points (excluding -1) of a fixed 55-adic algebraic function.

Solutions of diophantine equations as periodic points of pp-adic algebraic functions, I

Solutions of the quartic Fermat equation in ring class fields of odd conductor over quadratic fields K=Q(−d)K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d}) with −d≡1-d \equiv 1 (mod 88) are shown to be periodic points of a fixed algebraic function T(z)T(z) defined on the punctured disk 0<∣z∣2≤120< |z|_2 \le \frac{1}{2} of the maximal unramified, algebraic extension K2\textsf{K}_2 of the 22-adic field Q2\mathbb{Q}_2. All ring class fields of odd conductor over imaginary quadratic fields in which the prime p=2p=2 splits are shown to be generated by complex periodic points of the algebraic function TT, and conversely, all but two of the periodic points of TT generate ring class fields over suitable imaginary quadratic fields. This gives a dynamical proof of a class number relation originally proved by Deuring. It is conjectured that a similar situation holds for an arbitrary prime pp in place of p=2p=2, where the case p=3p=3 has been previously proved by the author, and the case p=5p=5 will be handled in Part II.

Solutions of the cubic Fermat equation in ring class fields of imaginary quadratic fields (as periodic points of a 3-adic algebraic function)

Explicit solutions of the cubic Fermat equation are constructed in ring class fields ΩfΩ_f, with conductor ff prime to 33, of any imaginary quadratic field KK whose discriminant satisfies dK≡1d_K \equiv 1 (mod 33), in terms of the Dedekind ηη-function. As KK and ff vary, the set of coordinates of all solutions is shown to be the exact set of periodic points of a single algebraic function and its inverse defined on natural subsets of the maximal unramified, algebraic extension K3\textsf{K}_3 of the 33-adic field Q3\mathbb{Q}_3. This is used to give a dynamical proof of a class number relation of Deuring. These solutions are then used to give an unconditional proof of part of Aigner's conjecture: the cubic Fermat equation has a nontrivial solution in K=Q(−d)K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d}) if dK≡1d_K \equiv 1 (mod 33) and the class number h(K)h(K) is not divisible by 33. If 3∣h(K)3 \mid h(K), congruence conditions for the trace of specific elements of ΩfΩ_f are exhibited which imply the existence of a point of infinite order in Fer3(K)Fer_3(K).

Synthetic foundations of cevian geometry II: The center of the cevian conic

This paper continues the investigation of Part I, by studying the conic CP\mathcal{C}_P on the five points ABCPQABCPQ, where ABCABC is a given ordinary triangle and QQ is the isotomcomplement of PP, defined as the complement of the isotomic conjugate P′P' of PP with respect to triangle ABCABC. We show that CP\mathcal{C}_P also lies on the points P′P' and Q′Q', where Q′Q' is the isotomcomplement of P′P'. The conic CP\mathcal{C}_P lies on six other points which are the images of the vertices of ABCABC under the affine mapping λ=TP′∘TP−1λ=T_{P'} \circ T_P^{-1} and its inverse, where TPT_P and TP′T_{P'} are the unique affine maps taking ABCABC to the cevian triangles of PP and P′P', respectively. In the paper we characterize the center ZZ of CP\mathcal{C}_P as the unique fixed point of λλ in the extended plane, when CP\mathcal{C}_P is a parabola or an ellipse, and the unique ordinary fixed point of λλ, when CP\mathcal{C}_P is a hyperbola. We also show that Z=GV⋅TP(GV)Z=GV \cdot T_P(GV), where GG is the centroid of ABCABC and V=PQ⋅P′Q′V=PQ \cdot P'Q'. When PP is the Gergonne point of ABCABC, this gives a new characterization of the Feuerbach point ZZ. All of our arguments are purely synthetic.

The quartic Fermat equation in Hilbert class fields of imaginary quadratic fields

It is shown that the quartic Fermat equation x4+y4=1x^4 +y^4=1 has nontrivial integral solutions in the Hilbert class field ΣΣ of any quadratic field K=Q(−d)K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d}) whose discriminant satisfies −d≡1-d \equiv 1 (mod 8). A corollary is that the quartic Fermat equation has no nontrivial solution in K=Q(−p)K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p}), for pp (>7)( > 7) a prime congruent to 77 (mod 8), but does have a nontrivial solution in the odd degree extension ΣΣ of KK. These solutions arise from explicit formulas for the points of order 4 on elliptic curves in Tate normal form. The solutions are studied in detail and the results are applied to prove several properties of the Weber singular moduli introduced by Yui and Zagier.
