Tree level integrability in 2d quantum field theories and affine Toda models

We investigate the perturbative integrability of massive (1+1)-dimensional bosonic quantum field theories, focusing on the conditions for them to have a purely elastic S-matrix, with no particle production and diagonal scattering, at tree level. For theories satisfying what we call `simply-laced scattering conditions', by which we mean that poles in inelastic $2$ to $2$ processes cancel in pairs, and poles in allowed processes are only due to one on-shell propagating particle at a time, the requirement that all inelastic amplitudes must vanish is shown to imply the so-called area rule, connecting the $3$-point couplings $C^{(3)}_{abc}$ to the masses $m_a$, $m_b$, $m_c$ of the coupled particles in a universal way. We prove that the constraints we find are universally satisfied by all affine Toda theories, connecting pole cancellations in amplitudes to properties of the underlying root systems, and develop a number of tools that we expect will be relevant for the study of loop amplitudes.

Geometric aspects of the ODE/IM correspondence

This review describes a link between Lax operators, embedded surfaces and Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations for integrable quantum field theories. This surprising connection between classical and quantum models is undoubtedly one of the most striking discoveries that emerged from the off-critical generalisation of the ODE/IM correspondence, which initially involved only conformal invariant quantum field theories. We will mainly focus of the KdV and sinh-Gordon models. However, various aspects of other interesting systems, such as affine Toda field theories and non-linear sigma models, will be mentioned. We also discuss the implications of these ideas in the AdS/CFT context, involving minimal surfaces and Wilson loops. This work is a follow-up of the ODE/IM review published more than ten years ago by JPA, before the discovery of its off-critical generalisation and the corresponding geometrical interpretation. (Partially based on lectures given at the Young Researchers Integrability School 2017, in Dublin.)

Staccato radiation from the decay of large amplitude oscillons

We study the decay of large amplitude, almost periodic breather-like states in a deformed sine-Gordon model in one spatial dimension. We discover that these objects decay in a staggered fashion via a series of transitions, during which higher harmonics are released as short, staccato bursts of radiation. Further, we argue that this phenomenon is not restricted to one particular model, and that similar mechanisms of radiative decay of long-lived oscillating states can be observed for a wide class of physical systems, including the $ϕ^6$ model.

Breaking integrability at the boundary: the sine-Gordon model with Robin boundary conditions

We explore boundary scattering in the sine-Gordon model with a non-integrable family of Robin boundary conditions. The soliton content of the field after collision is analysed using a numerical implementation of the direct scattering problem associated with the inverse scattering method. We find that an antikink may be reflected into various combinations of an antikink, a kink, and one or more breathers, depending on the values of the initial antikink velocity and a parameter associated with the boundary condition. In addition we observe regions with an intricate resonance structure arising from the creation of an intermediate breather whose recollision with the boundary is highly dependent on the breather phase.

Form factor relocalisation and interpolating renormalisation group flows from the staircase model

We investigate the staircase model, introduced by Aliosha Zamolodchikov through an analytic continuation of the sinh-Gordon S-matrix to describe interpolating flows between minimal models of conformal field theory in two dimensions. Applying the form factor expansion and the c-theorem, we show that the resulting c-function has the same physical content as that found by Zamolodchikov from the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz. This turns out to be a consequence of a nontrivial underlying mechanism, which leads to an interesting localisation pattern for the spectral integrals giving the multi-particle contributions. We demonstrate several aspects of this form factor relocalisation, which suggests a novel approach to the construction of form factors and spectral sums in integrable renormalisation group flows with non-diagonal scattering.

Quasi-exact solvability, resonances and trivial monodromy in ordinary differential equations

A correspondence between the sextic anharmonic oscillator and a pair of third-order ordinary differential equations is used to investigate the phenomenon of quasi-exact solvability for eigenvalue problems involving differential operators with order greater than two. In particular, links with Bender-Dunne polynomials and resonances between independent solutions are observed for certain second-order cases, and extended to the higher-order problems.

The Bethe Ansatz and the Tzitzéica-Bullough-Dodd equation

The theory of classically integrable nonlinear wave equations, and the Bethe Ansatz systems describing massive quantum field theories defined on an infinite cylinder, are related by an important mathematical correspondence that still lacks a satisfactory physical interpretation. In this paper we shall describe this link for the case of the classical and quantum versions of the (Tzitzéica-)Bullough-Dodd model.

Kink-antikink collisions in the phi^6 model

We study kink-antikink collisions in the one-dimensional non-integrable scalar phi^6 model. Although the single-kink solutions for this model do not possess an internal vibrational mode, our simulations reveal a resonant scattering structure, thereby providing a counterexample to the standard belief that existence of such a mode is a necessary condition for multi-bounce resonances in general kink-antikink collisions. We investigate the two-bounce windows in detail, and present evidence that this structure is caused by existence of bound states in the spectrum of small oscillations about a combined kink-antikink configuration.

Exact g-function flow between conformal field theories

Exact equations are proposed to describe g-function flows in integrable boundary quantum field theories which interpolate between different conformal field theories in their ultraviolet and infrared limits, extending previous work where purely massive flows were treated. The approach is illustrated with flows between the tricritical and critical Ising models, but the method is not restricted to these cases and should be of use in unravelling general patterns of integrable boundary flows between pairs of conformal field theories.

From PT-symmetric quantum mechanics to conformal field theory

One of the simplest examples of a PT-symmetric quantum system is the scaling Yang-Lee model, a quantum field theory with cubic interaction and purely imaginary coupling. We give a historical review of some facts about this model in d <= 2 dimensions, from its original definition in connection with phase transitions in the Ising model and its relevance to polymer physics, to the role it has played in studies of integrable quantum field theory and of PT-symmetric quantum mechanics. We also discuss some more general results on PT-symmetric quantum mechanics and the ODE/IM correspondence, and mention applications to magnetic systems and cold atom physics.

Mass scales and crossover phenomena in the Homogeneous Sine-Gordon Models

The finite-size behaviours of the homogeneous sine-Gordon models are analysed in detail, using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. Crossovers are observed which allow scales associated with both stable and unstable quantum particles to be picked up. By introducing the concept of shielding, we show that these match precisely with the mass scales found classically, supporting the idea that the full set of unstable particle states persists even far from the semiclassical regime. General rules for the effective TBA systems governing individual crossovers are given, and we also comment on the Lagrangian treatment of the theories, novel issues which arise in the form-factor approach for theories with unstable particles, and the role of heterotic cosets in the staircase flows exhibited by the HSG models.

Integrable aspects of the scaling q-state Potts models I: bound states and bootstrap closure

We discuss the q-state Potts models for q<=4, in the scaling regimes close to their critical or tricritical points. Starting from the kink S-matrix elements proposed by Chim and Zamolodchikov, the bootstrap is closed for the scaling regions of all critical points, and for the tricritical points when 4>q>=2. We also note a curious appearance of the extended last line of Freudenthal's magic square in connection with the Potts models.

Integrable aspects of the scaling q-state Potts models II: finite-size effects

We continue our discussion of the q-state Potts models for q <= 4, in the scaling regimes close to their critical and tricritical points. In a previous paper, the spectrum and full S-matrix of the models on an infinite line were elucidated; here, we consider finite-size behaviour. TBA equations are proposed for all cases related to phi(21) and phi(12) perturbations of unitary minimal models. These are subjected to a variety of checks in the ultraviolet and infrared limits, and compared with results from a recently-proposed nonlinear integral equation. A nonlinear integral equation is also used to study the flows from tricritical to critical models, over the full range of q. Our results should also be of relevance to the study of the off-critical dilute A models in regimes 1 and 2.

Excited states by analytic continuation of TBA equations

We suggest an approach to the problem of finding integral equations for the excited states of an integrable model, starting from the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations for its ground state. The idea relies on analytic continuation through complex values of the coupling constant, and an analysis of the monodromies that the equations and their solutions undergo. For the scaling Lee-Yang model, we find equations in this way for the one- and two- particle states in the spin-zero sector, and suggest various generalisations. Numerical results show excellent agreement with the truncated conformal space approach, and we also treat some of the ultraviolet and infrared asymptotics analytically.

Partition Functions, Intertwiners and the Coxeter Element

The partition functions of Pasquier models on the cylinder, and the associated intertwiners, are considered. It is shown that earlier results due to Saleur and Bauer can be rephrased in a geometrical way, reminiscent of formulae found in certain purely elastic scattering theories. This establishes the positivity of these intertwiners in a general way and elucidates connections between these objects and the finite subgroups of SU(2). It also offers the hope that analogous geometrical structures might lie behind the so-far mysterious results found by Di Francesco and Zuber in their search for generalisations of these models.

Staircase Models from Affine Toda Field Theory

We propose a class of purely elastic scattering theories generalising the staircase model of Al. B. Zamolodchikov, based on the affine Toda field theories for simply-laced Lie algebras g=A,D,E at suitable complex values of their coupling constants. Considering their Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations, we give analytic arguments in support of a conjectured renormalisation group flow visiting the neighbourhood of each W_g minimal model in turn.

Root Systems and Purely Elastic S-Matrices II

Starting from a recently-proposed general formula, various properties of the ADE series of purely elastic S-matrices are rederived in a universal way. In particular, the relationship between the pole structure and the bootstrap equations is shown to follow from properties of root systems. The discussion leads to a formula for the signs of the three-point couplings in the simply-laced affine Toda theories, and a simple proof of a result due to Klassen and Melzer of relevance to Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz calculations.
