Non-Faradaic electric currents in the Nernst-Planck equations and 'action at a distance' diffusiophoresis in crossed salt gradients

In the Nernst-Planck equations in two or more dimensions, a non-Faradaic electric current can arise as a consequence of connecting patches with different liquid junction potentials. Whereas this current vanishes for binary electrolytes or one-dimensional problems, it is in general non-vanishing for example in crossed salt gradients. For a suspended colloidal particle, electrophoresis in the corresponding electrostatic potential gradient is generally vectorially misaligned with chemiphoresis in the concentration gradients, and diffusiophoresis (via electrophoresis) can occur in regions where there are no local concentration gradients ('action at a distance'). These phenomena may provide new opportunities to manipulate and sort particles, in microfluidic devices for example.

Beading instability and spreading kinetics in grooves with convex curved sides

The coarsening kinetics for the beading instability for liquid contained in a groove with convex curved sides (for example between a pair of parallel touching cylinders) is considered as an open channel flow problem. In contrast to a V-shaped wedge or U-shaped microchannel, it is argued that droplet coarsening takes place by viscous hydrodynamic transport through a stable column of liquid that coexists with the droplets in the groove at a slightly positive Laplace pressure. With some simplifying assumptions, this leads to a t^(1/7) growth law for the characteristic droplet size as a function of time, and a t^(-3/7) law for the decrease in the droplet line density. Some remarks are also made on the spreading kinetics of an isolated drop deposited in such a groove.

Gibbs, Boltzmann, and negative temperatures

In a recent paper, Dunkel and Hilbert [Nature Physics 10, 67-72 (2014)] use an entropy definition due to Gibbs to provide a 'consistent thermostatistics' which forbids negative absolute temperatures. Here we argue that the Gibbs entropy fails to satisfy a basic requirement of thermodynamics, namely that when two bodies are in thermal equilibrium, they should be at the same temperature. The entropy definition due to Boltzmann does meet this test, and moreover in the thermodynamic limit can be shown to satisfy Dunkel and Hilbert's consistency criterion. Thus, far from being forbidden, negative temperatures are inevitable, in systems with bounded energy spectra.

Biodiversity on island chains: neutral model simulations

A neutral ecology model is simulated on an island chain, in which neighbouring islands can exchange individuals but only the first island is able to receive immigrants from a metacommunity. It is found by several measures that biodiversity decreases along the chain, being highest for the first island. Subtle changes in taxon abundance distributions can be detected when islands in the chain are compared to diversity-matched single islands. The results potentially apply to human microbial diversity, but highlight the difficulty of using static single-site taxon abundance distributions to discriminate between dispersal limitation mechanisms.
