Physical Representations for Scattering Amplitudes and the Wavefunction of the Universe

The way we organise perturbation theory is of fundamental importance both for computing the observables of relevance and for extracting fundamental physics out of them. If on one hand the different ways in which the perturbative observables can be written make manifest different features (e.g. symmetries as well as principles such as unitarity, causality and locality), on the other hand precisely demanding that some concrete features are manifest lead to different ways of organising perturbation theory. In the context of flat-space scattering amplitudes, a number of them are already known and exploited, while much less is known for cosmological observables. In the present work, we show how to systematically write down both the wavefunction of the universe and the flat-space scattering amplitudes, in such a way that they manifestly show physical poles only. We make use of the invariant definition of such observables in terms of {\it cosmological polytopes} and their {\it scattering facet}. In particular, we show that such representations correspond to triangulations of such objects through hyperplanes identified by the intersection of their facets outside of them. All possible triangulations of this type generate the different representations. This allows us to provide a general proof for the conjectured all-loop causal representation of scattering amplitudes. Importantly, all such representations can be viewed as making explicit a subset of compatible singularities, and our construction provides a way to extend Steinmann relations to higher codimension singularities for both the flat-space scattering amplitudes and the cosmological wavefunction.

Wavefunctionals/S-matrix techniques in de Sitter

Flat-space physics is highly constrained by basic principles such as Lorentz invariance, locality, unitarity and causality. This is neatly seen in the structure of scattering amplitudes. For processes occurring in an expanding background we do not have the same level of understanding, not even in the case of de Sitter space. In this talk I provide a brief account of some of the recent efforts which aim to fill this gap. I will discuss some novel results in the understanding of the analytic structure of the Bunch-Davies wavefunction(al) of the universe in the perturbative regime, some fundamental constraints that it ought to satisfy as well as some general insights coming from an underlying combinatorial structure.

Positive Geometries and Differential Forms with Non-Logarithmic Singularities I

Positive geometries encode the physics of scattering amplitudes in flat space-time and the wavefunction of the universe in cosmology for a large class of models. Their unique canonical forms, providing such quantum mechanical observables, are characterised by having only logarithmic singularities along all the boundaries of the positive geometry. However, physical observables have logarithmic singularities just for a subset of theories. Thus, it becomes crucial to understand whether a similar paradigm can underlie their structure in more general cases. In this paper we start a systematic investigation of a geometric-combinatorial characterisation of differential forms with non-logarithmic singularities, focusing on projective polytopes and related meromorphic forms with multiple poles. We introduce the notions of covariant forms and covariant pairings. Covariant forms have poles only along the boundaries of the given polytope; moreover, their leading Laurent coefficients along any of the boundaries are still covariant forms on the specific boundary. Whereas meromorphic forms in covariant pairing with a polytope are associated to a specific (signed) triangulation, in which poles on spurious boundaries do not cancel completely, but their order is lowered. These meromorphic forms can be fully characterised if the polytope they are associated to is viewed as the restriction of a higher dimensional one onto a hyperplane. The canonical form of the latter can be mapped into a covariant form or a form in covariant pairing via a covariant restriction. We show how the geometry of the higher dimensional polytope determines the structure of these differential forms. Finally, we discuss how these notions are related to Jeffrey-Kirwan residues and cosmological polytopes.

Steinmann Relations and the Wavefunction of the Universe

The physical principles of causality and unitarity put strong constraints on the analytic structure of the flat-space S-matrix. In particular, these principles give rise to the Steinmann relations, which require that the double discontinuities of scattering amplitudes in partially-overlapping momentum channels vanish. Conversely, at cosmological scales, the imprint of causality and unitarity is in general less well understood---the wavefunction of the universe lives on the future space-like boundary, and has all time evolution integrated out. In the present work, we show how the flat-space Steinmann relations emerge from the structure of the wavefunction of the universe, and derive similar relations that apply to the wavefunction itself. This is done within the context of scalar toy models whose perturbative wavefunction has a first-principles definition in terms of cosmological polytopes. In particular, we use the fact that the scattering amplitude is encoded in the scattering facet of cosmological polytopes, and that cuts of the amplitude are encoded in the codimension-one boundaries of this facet. As we show, the flat-space Steinmann relations are thus implied by the non-existence of codimension-two boundaries at the intersection of the boundaries associated with pairs of partially-overlapping channels. Applying the same argument to the full cosmological polytope, we also derive Steinmann-type constraints that apply to the full wavefunction of the universe. These arguments show how the combinatorial properties of cosmological polytopes lead to the emergence of flat-space causality in the S-matrix, and provide new insights into the analytic structure of the wavefunction of the universe.

On-shell diagrammatics and the perturbative structure of planar gauge theories

We discuss the on-shell diagrammatic representation of theories less special than maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills. In particular, we focus on planar $\mathcal{N}\,\le\,2$ gauge theories, including pure Yang-Mills. For such a class of theories, the on-shell diagrammatics is endowed with a decoration which carries the information on the helicity of the coherent states. In the first part of the paper we extensively discuss the properties of this decorated diagrammatics. Particular relevance have the helicity flows that the decoration induces on the diagrams, which allows to identify the different classes of singularities and, consequentely, the singularity structure of the on-shell processes. The second part of the paper establishes a link between the decorated on-shell diagrammatics and the scattering amplitudes for the theories under examination. We prove that an all-loop recursion relation at integrand level holds also for $\mathcal{N}\,=\,1,\,2$, while for $\mathcal{N}\,=\,0$ we are able to set up a preliminary analysis at one loop. In both supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric case, the treatment of the forward limit is subtle. We provide a fully on-shell analysis of it which is crucial for the proof of the all-loop recursion relation and for the analysis of pure Yang-Mills.

On the Regularization of On-Shell Diagrams

In this letter we discuss a regularization scheme for the integration of generic on-shell forms. The basic idea is to extend the three-particle amplitudes to the space of unphysical helicities keeping the dimension of the related coupling constant fixed, and construct on-shell forms out of them. We briefly discuss the analytic structure of the extended on-shell diagrams, both at tree level and one loop. Furthermore, we propose an integration contour which, applied to the relevant on-shell forms, allows to extract the four-particle amplitudes in Lorentz signature at one loop. With this contour at hand, we explicitly apply our procedure to this case obtaining the IR divergences as poles in the deformation parameter space, as well as the correct functional form for the finite term. This procedure provides a natural regularization for generic on-shell diagrams.

New structures in scattering amplitudes: a review

We review some recent developments in the understanding of field theories in the perturbative regime. In particular, we discuss the notions of analyticity, unitarity and locality, and therefore the singularity structure of scattering amplitudes in general interacting theories. We describe their tree-level structure and their on-shell representations, as well as the links between the tree-level structure itself and the structure of the loop amplitudes. Finally, we describe the on-shell diagrammatics recently proposed both on general grounds and in the remarkable example of planar supersymmetric theories. This review is partially based on lectures given at: Dipartimento di Fisica and INFN, Università di Bologna; Departamento de Fısica de Partıculas, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela; and as part of the program Strings@ar Lectures on Advanced Topics of High Energy Physics held at the IAFE

Exploration of the Tree-Level S-Matrix of Massless Particles

In recent years, the BCFW construction provided a very powerful tool for computing scattering amplitudes as well as it shed light on the perturbation theory structure. In this talk, we discuss the long-standing issue of the boundary term arising when the amplitudes do not vanish as some momenta are taken to infinity along some complex direction. In particular, we provide a new set of on-shell recursion relations valid for such theories and discuss its consequences on our understanding on the perturbation theory structure of the S-Matrix.

Fermionic impurities in Chern-Simons-matter theories

We study the addition of quantum fermionic impurities to the N=6 supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter theories in 2+1 spacetime dimensions. The impurities are introduced by means of Wilson loops in the antisymmetric representation of the gauge group. In a holographic setup, the system is represented by considering D6-branes probing the AdS_4 x CP^3 background of type IIA supergravity. We study the thermodynamic properties of the system and show how a Kondo lattice model with holographic dimers can be constructed. By computing the Kaluza-Klein fluctuation modes of the probe brane we determine the complete spectrum of dimensions of the impurity operators. A very rich structure is found, depending both on the Kaluza-Klein quantum numbers and on the filling fraction of the impurities.

Holographic Kondo Model in Various Dimensions

We study the addition of localised impurities to U(N) Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in (p+1)-dimensions by using the gauge/gravity correspondence. From the gravity side, the impurities are introduced by considering probe D(8-p)-branes extendingalong the time and radial directions and wrapping an (7-p)-dimensional submanifold of the internal (8-p)-sphere, so that the degrees of freedom are point-like from the gauge theory perspective. We analyse both the configuration in which the branes generate straight flux tubes -corresponding to actual single impurities - and the one in which connected flux tubes are created- corresponding to dimers. We discuss the thermodynamics of both the configurations and the related phase transition. In particular, the specific heat of the straight flux-tube configuration is negative for p<3, while it is never the case for the connected one. We study the stability of the system by looking at the impurity fluctuations. Finally, we characterise the theory by computing one- and two-point correlators of the gauge theory operators dual to the impurity fluctuations. Because of the underlying generalised conformal structure, such correlators can be expressed in terms of an effective coupling constant (which runs because of its dimensionality) and a generalised conformal dimension.

Exploring the S-Matrix of Massless Particles

We use the recently proposed generalised on-shell representation for scattering amplitudes and a consistency test to explore the space of tree-level consistent couplings in four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. The extension of the constructible notion implied by the generalised on-shell representation, i.e. the possibility to reconstruct at tree level all the scattering amplitudes from the three-particle ones, together with the imposition of the consistency conditions at four-particle level, allow to rediscover all the known theories and their algebra structure, if any. Interestingly, this analysis seems to leave room for high-spin couplings, provided that at least the requirement of locality is weakened. We do not claim to have found tree-level consistent high-spin theories, but rather that our methods show signatures of them and very likely, with a suitable modification, they can be a good framework to perform a systematic search.

On the Tree-Level Structure of Scattering Amplitudes of Massless Particles

We provide a new set of on-shell recursion relations for tree-level scattering amplitudes, which are valid for any non-trivial theory of massless particles. In particular, we reconstruct the scattering amplitudes from (a subset of) their poles and zeroes. The latter determine the boundary term arising in the BCFW-representation when the amplitudes do not vanish as some momenta are taken to infinity along some complex direction. Specifically, such a boundary term can be expressed as a sum of products of two on-shell amplitudes with fewer external states and a factor dependent on the location of the relevant zeroes and poles. This allows us to recast the amplitudes to have the standard BCFW-structure, weighted by a simple factor dependent on a subset of zeroes and poles of the amplitudes. We further comment on the physical interpretation of the zeroes as a particular kinematic limit in the complexified momentum space. The main implication of the existence of such recursion relations is that the tree-level approximation of any consistent theory of massless particles can be fully determined just by the knowledge of the corresponding three-particle amplitudes.

Transport properties of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at finite coupling

Gauge theory-string theory duality describes strongly coupled N=4 supersymmetric SU(n) Yang-Mills theory at finite temperature in terms of near extremal black 3-brane geometry in type IIB string theory. We use this correspondence to compute the leading correction in inverse 't Hooft coupling to the shear diffusion constant, bulk viscosity and the speed of sound in the large-n N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory plasma. The transport coefficients are extracted from the dispersion relation for the shear and the sound wave lowest quasinormal modes in the leading order alpha'-corrected black D3 brane geometry. We find the shear viscosity extracted from the shear diffusion constant to agree with result of [hep-th/0406264]; also, the leading correction to bulk viscosity and the speed of sound vanishes. Our computation provides a highly nontrivial consistency check on the hydrodynamic description of the alpha'-corrected nonextremal black branes in string theory.
