Spatially inhomogeneous and irrotational geometries admitting Intrinsic Conformal Symmetries

"Diagonal" spatially inhomogeneous (SI) models are introduced under the assumption of the existence of (proper) intrinsic symmetries and can be seen, in some sense, complementary to the Szekeres models. The structure of this class of spacetimes can be regarded as a generalization of the (twist-free) Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS) geometries without any global isometry containing, however, these models as special cases. We consider geometries where a six-dimensional algebra $\mathcal{IC}$ of Intrinsic Conformal Vector Fields (ICVFs) exists acting on a $2-$dimensional (pseudo)-Riemannian manifold. Its members $\mathbf{X}_{α}$, constituted of 3 Intrinsic Killing Vector Fields (IKVFs) and 3 \emph{proper} and \emph{gradient} ICVFs, as well as the specific form of the gravitational field are given explicitly. An interesting consequence, in contrast with the Szekeres models, is the immediate existence of \emph{conserved quantities along null geodesics}. We check computationally that the magnetic part $H_{ab}$ of the Weyl tensor vanishes whereas the shear $σ_{ab}$ and the electric part $E_{ab}$ share a common eigenframe irrespective of the fluid interpretation of the models. A side result is the fact that the spacetimes are foliated by a set of \emph{conformally flat } $3-$dimensional \emph{timelike} slices when the anisotropy of the \emph{flux-free} fluid is described only in terms of the 3 \emph{principal inhomogeneous "pressures"} $p_α$ or equivalently when the Ricci tensor shares the same basis of eigenvectors with $σ_{ab}$ and $E_{ab}$. The conformal flatness also indicates that a \emph{10-dimensional algebra} of ICVFs $\mathbfΞ$ acting on the $3-$dimensional timelike slices is highly possible to exist enriching in that way the set of conserved quantities admitted by the SI models found in the present paper.

Effective cosmological equations of induced f(R) gravity

We expand the study of generalized brane cosmologies by allowing for an $f(\tilde{\cal R})$ gravity term on the brane, with $\tilde{\cal R}$ the curvature scalar derived from the induced metric. We also include arbitrary matter components on the brane and in the five-dimensional bulk. At low energies, the effect of the bulk on the brane evolution can be described through a mirage component, termed generalized dark radiation, in the effective four-dimensional field equations. Using the covariant formalism, we derive the exact form of these equations. We also derive an effective conservation equation involving the brane matter and the generalized dark radiation. At low energies the coupled brane-bulk system has a purely four-dimensional description. The applications of the formalism include generalizations of the Starobinsky model and the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati cosmology.

Note on Matter Collineations in Kantowski-Sachs, Bianchi Types I and III Spacetimes

We show that the classification of Kantowski-Sachs, Bianchi Types I and III spacetimes admitting Matter Collineations (MCs) presented in a recent paper by Camci et al. [Camci, U., and Sharif, M. {Matter Collineations in Kantowski-Sachs, Bianchi Types I and III Spacetimes}, 2003 Gen. Relativ. Grav. vol. 35, 97-109] is incomplete. Furthermore for these spacetimes and when the Einstein tensor is non-degenerate, we give the complete Lie Algebra of MCs and the algebraic constraints on the spatial components of the Einstein tensor.

Self-similar Bianchi type VIII and IX models

It is shown that in transitively self-similar spatially homogeneous tilted perfect fluid models the symmetry vector is not normal to the surfaces of spatial homogeneity. A direct consequence of this result is that there are no self-similar Bianchi VIII and IX tilted perfect fluid models. Furthermore the most general Bianchi VIII and IX spacetime which admit a four dimensional group of homotheties is given.

The computation of the Conformal Killing Vectors of an 1+(n-1) decomposable metric

A generalisation of a known theorem concerning the computation of the conformal algebra in 1+(n-1) decomposable spaces is presented. It is shown that the general form of Conformal Vector Fields (CVF) is the sum of a gradient CVF and a Killing or Homothetic (n-1)-vector. A simple criterion is established which enables one to check if a 1+(n-1) decomposable spacetime admits proper CVF. As an example, the complete conformal algebra of a Gödel-type spacetime is computed.

Symmetries of Bianchi I space-times

All diagonal proper Bianchi I space-times are determined which admit certain important symmetries. It is shown that for Homotheties, Conformal motions and Kinematic Self-Similarities the resulting space-times are defined explicitly in terms of a set of parameters whereas Affine Collineations, Ricci Collineations and Curvature Collineations, if they are admitted, they determine the metric modulo certain algebraic conditions. In all cases the symmetry vectors are explicitly computed. The physical and the geometrical consequences of the results are discussed and a new anisitropic fluid, physically valid solution which admits a proper conformal Killing vector, is given.
