$k$-Minkowski-deformation of $U(1)$ gauge theory

We construct a non-commutative kappa-Minkowski deformation of U(1) gauge theory, following a general approach, recently proposed in JHEP 2008 (2020) 041. We obtain an exact (all orders in the non-commutativity parameter) expression for both the deformed gauge transformations and the deformed field strength, which is covariant under these transformations. The corresponding Yang-Mills Lagrangian is gauge covariant and reproduces the Maxwell Lagrangian in the commutative limit. Gauge invariance of the action functional requires a non-trivial integration measure which, in the commutative limit, does not reduce to the trivial one. We discuss the physical meaning of such a nontrivial commutative limit, relating it to a nontrivial space-time curvature of the undeformed theory. Moreover, we propose a rescaled kappa-Minkowski non-commutative structure, which exhibits a standard flat commutative limit.

Noncommutative $R^d$ via closed star product

We consider linear star products on $R^d$ of Lie algebra type. First we derive the closed formula for the polydifferential representation of the corresponding Lie algebra generators. Using this representation we define the Weyl star product on the dual of the Lie algebra. Then we construct a gauge operator relating the Weyl star product with the one which is closed with respect to some trace functional, $Tr( f\star g)= Tr( f\cdot g)$. We introduce the derivative operator on the algebra of the closed star product and show that the corresponding Leibnitz rule holds true up to a total derivative. As a particular example we study the space $R^3_θ$ with $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ type noncommutativity and show that in this case the closed star product is the one obtained from the Duflo quantization map. As a result a Laplacian can be defined such that its commutative limit reproduces the ordinary commutative one. The deformed Leibnitz rule is applied to scalar field theory to derive conservation laws and the corresponding noncommutative currents.

Spin connection and boundary states in a topological insulator

We study the surface resistivity of a three-dimensional topological insulator when the boundaries exhibit a non trivial curvature. We obtain an analytical solution for a spherical topological insulator, and we show that a non trivial quantum spin connection emerges from the three dimensional band structure. We analyze the effect of the spin connection on the scattering by a bump on a flat surface. Quantum effects induced by the geometry lead to resonances when the electron wavelength is comparable to the size of the bump.

The Fuzzy Disc

We introduce a finite dimensional matrix model approximation to the algebra of functions on a disc based on noncommutative geometry. The algebra is a subalgebra of the one characterizing the noncommutative plane with a * product and depends on two parameters N and theta. It is composed of functions which decay exponentially outside a disc. In the limit in which the size of the matrices goes to infinity and the noncommutativity parameter goes to zero the disc becomes sharper. We introduce a Laplacian defined on the whole algebra and calculate its eigenvalues. We also calculate the two--points correlation function for a free massless theory (Green's function). In both cases the agreement with the exact result on the disc is very good already for relatively small matrices. This opens up the possibility for the study of field theories on the disc with nonperturbative methods. The model contains edge states, a fact studied in a similar matrix model independently introduced by Balachandran, Gupta and Kurkcuoglu.

$SU_q(2)$ Lattice Gauge Theory

We reformulate the Hamiltonian approach to lattice gauge theories such that, at the classical level, the gauge group does not act canonically, but instead as a Poisson-Lie group. At the quantum level, it then gets promoted to a quantum group gauge symmetry. The theory depends on two parameters - the deformation parameter $λ$ and the lattice spacing $a$. We show that the system of Kogut and Susskind is recovered when $λ\rightarrow 0$, while QCD is recovered in the continuum limit (for any $λ$). We thus have the possibility of having a two parameter regularization of QCD.

Correlation Functions of a Conformal Field Theory in Three Dimensions

We derive explicit forms of the two--point correlation functions of the $O(N)$ non-linear sigma model at the critical point, in the large $N$ limit, on various three dimensional manifolds of constant curvature. The two--point correlation function, $G(x, y)$, is the only $n$-point correlation function which survives in this limit. We analyze the short distance and long distance behaviour of $G(x, y)$. It is shown that $G(x, y)$ decays exponentially with the Riemannian distance on the spaces $R^2 \times S^1,~S^1 \times S^1 \times R, ~S^2 \times R,~H^2 \times R$. The decay on $R^3$ is of course a power law. We show that the scale for the correlation length is given by the geometry of the space and therefore the long distance behaviour of the critical correlation function is not necessarily a power law even though the manifold is of infinite extent in all directions; this is the case of the hyperbolic space where the radius of curvature plays the role of a scale parameter. We also verify that the scalar field in this theory is a primary field with weight $δ=-{1 \over 2}$; we illustrate this using the example of the manifold $S^2 \times R$ whose metric is conformally equivalent to that of $R^3-\{0\}$ up to a reparametrization.

Alternative Canonical Formalism for the Wess-Zumino-Witten Model

We study a canonical quantization of the Wess--Zumino--Witten (WZW) model which depends on two integer parameters rather than one. The usual theory can be obtained as a contraction, in which our two parameters go to infinity keeping the difference fixed. The quantum theory is equivalent to a generalized Thirring model, with left and right handed fermions transforming under different representations of the symmetry group. We also point out that the classical WZW model with a compact target space has a canonical formalism in which the current algebra is an affine Lie algebra of non--compact type. Also, there are some non--unitary quantizations of the WZW model in which there is invariance only under half the conformal algebra (one copy of the Virasoro algebra).
