Mimicking states with limited resources: passing quantum quiz via global control

Precise control of quantum systems with a moderate number of degrees of freedom, being of interest for application in quantum technologies, becomes experimentally feasible. Various types of quantum scenarios and protocols are being widely discussed in scientific literature. We propose, analyze, and optimize a protocol which allows fast simulation of properties of unknown quantum states relying on minimum relevant information. Our protocol, having common features with quantum identification and shortcuts to adiabaticity, permits avoiding orthogonality catastrophe, where transitions between physically very similar systems are characterized by zero or a very low fidelity.

Self-protected adiabatic quantum computation

Recent experiments show the existence of collective decoherence in quantum systems. We study the possibility of quantum computation in decoherence free subspace which is robust against such kind of decoherence processes. This passive protection protocol can be especially advantageous for continuous quantum computation such as quantum annealers. As an example we propose to use decoherence protected adiabatic quantum computation for the Grover search problem. Our proposal contains only two-body interactions, making it feasible in near-term quantum devices.

Dynamical invariants in non-Markovian quantum state diffusion equation

We find dynamical invariants for open quantum systems described by the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation. In stark contrast to closed systems where the dynamical invariant can be identical to the system density operator, these dynamical invariants no longer share the equation of motion for the density operator. Moreover, the invariants obtained with from bi-orthonormal basis can be used to render an exact solution to the QSD equation and the corresponding non-Markovian dynamics without using master equations or numerical simulations. Significantly we show that we can apply these dynamic invariants to reverse-engineering a Hamiltonian that is capable of driving the system to the target state, providing a novel way to design control strategy for open quantum systems.

Expedited Holonomic Quantum Computation in Decoherence-Free Subspace

Holonomic quantum computation (HQC) may not show its full potential in quantum speedup due to the prerequisite of a long coherent runtime imposed by the adiabatic condition. Here we show that the conventional HQC can be dramatically accelerated by using external control fields, of which the effectiveness is exclusively determined by the integral of the control fields in the time domain. Remarkably this control scheme can be realized with net zero energy cost and it is fault-tolerant against fluctuation and noise, significantly relaxing the experimental constraints. We demonstrate how to realize the scheme via decoherence-free subspaces. In this way we unify quantum robustness merits of this fault-tolerant control scheme, the conventional HQC and decoherence-free subspace, and propose an {\em expedited} holonomic quantum computation protocol.

Spatial compression of a particle state in a parabolic potential by spin measurements

We propose a scheme for engineering compressed spatial states in a two-dimensional parabolic potential with a spin-orbit coupling by selective spin measurements. This sequence of measurements results in a coordinate-dependent density matrix with probability maxima achieved at a set of lines or at a two dimensional lattice. The resultant probability density depends on the spin-orbit coupling and the potential parameters and allows one to obtain a broad class of localized pure states on demand. The proposed scheme can be realized in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates.

Two-component Dirac equation

We provide an alternative approach to relativistic dynamics based on the Feshbach projection technique. Instead of directly studying the Dirac equation, we derive a two-component equation for the upper spinor. This approach allows one to investigate the underlying physics in a different perspective. For particles with small mass such as the neutrino, the leading order equation has a Hermitian effective Hamiltonian, implying there is no leakage between the upper and lower spinors. In the weak relativistic regime, the leading order corresponds to a non-Hermitian correction to the Pauli equation, which takes into account the non-zero possibility of finding the lower-spinor state and offers a more precise description.

Ground state cooling of quantum systems via a one-shot measurement

We prove that there exists a family of quantum systems that can be cooled to their ground states by a one-shot projective measurement on the ancillas coupled to these systems. Consequently, this proof gives rise to the conditions for achieving the one-shot measurement ground-state cooling (OSMGSC). We also propose a general procedure for finding unitary propagators and corresponding Hamiltonians to realize such cooling by means of inverse engineering technique.

Lagrangian approach in spin-oscillations problem

Lagrangian of electronic liquid in magneto-inhomogeneous micro-conductor has been constructed. A corresponding Euler-Lagrange equation has been solved. It was shown that the described system has eigenmodes of spin polarization and total electric current oscillations. The suggested approach permits to study the spin dynamics in an open-circuit which contains capacitance and/or inductivity.

Quantum simulator for many-body electron-electron Coulomb interaction with ion traps

We propose an analog quantum simulator that uses ion traps to realize the many-body electron-electron Coulomb interaction of an electron gas. This proposal maps a system that is difficult to solve and control to an experimentally-feasible setup that can be realized with current technologies. Using a dilatation transform, we show that ion traps can efficiently simulate electronic Coulomb interactions. No complexity overhead is added if only the energy spectrum is desired, and only a simple unitary transform is needed on the initial state otherwise. The runtime of the simulation is found to be much shorter than the timescale of the corresponding electronic system, minimizing susceptibility of the proposed quantum simulator to external noise and decoherence. This proposal works in any number of dimensions, and could be used to simulate different topological phases of electrons in graphene-like structures, by using ions trapped in honeycomb lattices.

The distinctions between the electrical conductivities under non-contact and contact current excitation in spin-split two-dimensional conductors

It is shown that the normal electron-electron scattering is a source of electrical resistance on non-contact current excitation in two-dimensional spin-split electron systems. In contrast to the contact current injection, non-contact current excitation causes spatially inhomogeneous polarization in a two-dimensional conductor leading to new resistivity mechanisms.

Non-Linear Spin Dynamics Of The Electron Liquid In Nanosystems

We investigate the dynamics of spin-nonequilibrium electron systems in the hydrodynamic flow regime, when the normal scattering processes, which conserve the total quasi-momentum of the system of electrons and quasi-particles that interact with them, dominate over other scattering processes. We obtain a set of spin-hydrodynamic equations for the case of an arbitrary electron spectrum that varies slowly with the coordinates. Solving the one-dimensional non-linear problem we found the exact solutions both for the electrical potential in the open-ends circuit and for the spin-electrical oscillation in an inhomogeneous conducting ring. As we demonstrate, the oscillation characteristics are different in the cases of a magnetic ring and a non-magnetic ring to which the spin polarization was injected. We found also that a voltage between the ends of the open circuit may reveal the presence of an inhomogeneous spin polarization of the electron density.

Strong spintronic magnetoelectric effect in layered magnetic metamaterial

It is shown that external magnetic field or magnetization induces electric polarization of microscopic isolated magnetic/non-magnetic hybrid structures due to the spin-dependent electron redistribution and mutual capacity. The magnetoelectric effect can be very strong, for instance the change of electric polarization reaches $100$ $μC/m^{2}$ at a constant magnetic field of only $1.5$ Tesla in the case of $100$ $÷$ $10$ nanometer structures which tightly fill the space, composing a metamaterial. The effect does not require using exotic compounds. Based on the obtained results we suggest a number of recommendations for future experimental design.

Dynamics of Spin-Polarized Electron Liquid and Spin Pendulum

We investigate the dynamics of spin-nonequilibrium electron systems for the case when normal electron collisions prevail over the other scattering processes and the "hydrodynamic flow" regime is realized. The hydrodynamic equations for the electron liquid have been obtained and analyzed. We demonstrate that oscillations of the spin polarization are possible in a conducting ring with inhomogeneous magnetic properties. These low-decay oscillations are accompanied by the oscillations of the drift current in the ring. We demonstrate also that the spin polarization of the electron density may be revealed via the voltage between the ends of the open circuit with an inhomogeneous spin polarization. The effect may be observed both in the hydrodynamic and diffusive regimes.

The electrical resistance of spatially varied magnetic interface. The role of normal scattering

We investigate the diffusive electron transport in conductors with spatially inhomogeneous magnetic properties taking into account both impurity and normal scattering. It is found that the additional interface resistance that arises due to the magnetic inhomogeneity depends essentially on their spatial characteristics. The resistance is proportional to the spin flip time in the case when the magnetic properties of the conducting system vary smoothly enough along the sample. It can be used to direct experimental investigation of spin flip processes. In the opposite case, when magnetic characteristics are varied sharply, the additional resistance depends essentially on the difference of magnetic properties of the sides far from the interface region. The resistance increases as the frequency of the electron-electron scattering increases. We consider also two types of smooth interfaces: (i) between fully spin-polarized magnetics and usual magnetic (or non-magnetic) conductors, and (ii) between two fully oppositely polarized magnetic conductors. It is shown that the interface resistance is very sensitive to appearing of the fully spin-polarized state under the applied external field.
