Vibrationally Excited C4_4H

Rotational spectra in four new excited vibrational levels of the linear carbon chain radical C4_4H radical were observed in the millimeter band between 69 and 364 GHz in a low pressure glow discharge, and two of these were observed in a supersonic molecular beam between 19 and 38 GHz. All have rotational constants within 0.4% of the 2Σ+^2Σ^+ ground vibrational state of C4_4H and were assigned to new bending vibrational levels, two each with 2Σ^2Σ and 2Π^2Π vibrational symmetry. The new levels are tentatively assigned to the 1ν61ν_6 and 1ν51ν_5 bending vibrational modes (both with 2Π^2Π symmetry), and the 1ν6+1ν71ν_6 + 1ν_7 and 1ν5+1ν61ν_5 + 1ν_6 combination levels (2Σ^2Σ symmetry) on the basis of the derived spectroscopic constants, relative intensities in our discharge source, and published laser spectroscopic and quantum calculations. Prior spectroscopic constants in the 1ν71ν_7 and 2ν72ν_7 levels were refined. Also presented are interferometric maps of the ground state and the 1ν71ν_7 level obtained with the SMA near 257 GHz which show that C4_4H is present near the central star in IRC+10216. We found no evidence with the SMA for the new vibrationally excited levels of C4_4H at a peak flux density averaged over a 3′′3^{\prime\prime} synthesized beam of ≥0.15\ge 0.15 Jy/beam in the 294-296 and 304-306 GHz range, but it is anticipated that rotational lines in the new levels might be observed in IRC+10216 when ALMA attains its full design capability.

A Molecular Spiral Arm in the Far Outer Galaxy

We have identified a spiral arm lying beyond the Outer Arm in the first Galactic quadrant ~15 kpc from the Galactic center. After tracing the arm in existing 21 cm surveys, we searched for molecular gas using the CfA 1.2 meter telescope and detected CO at 10 of 220 positions. The detections are distributed along the arm from l = 13 deg, v = -21 km/s to l = 55 deg, v = -84 km/s and coincide with most of the main H I concentrations. One of the detections was fully mapped to reveal a large molecular cloud with a radius of 47 pc and a molecular mass of ~50,000 Mo. At a mean distance of 21 kpc, the molecular gas in this arm is the most distant yet detected in the Milky Way. The new arm appears to be the continuation of the Scutum-Centaurus Arm in the outer Galaxy, as a symmetric counterpart of the nearby Perseus Arm.

A New Spiral Arm of the Galaxy: The Far 3-Kpc Arm

We report the detection in CO of the far-side counterpart of the well-known expanding 3-Kpc Arm in the central region of the Galaxy. In a CO longitude-velocity map at b = 0 deg the Far 3-Kpc Arm can be followed over at least 20 deg of Galactic longitude as a faint lane at positive velocities running parallel to the Near Arm. The Far Arm crosses l = 0 deg at +56 km/s, quite symmetric with the -53 km/s expansion velocity of the Near Arm. In addition to their symmetry in longitude and velocity, we find that the two arms have linewidths (~21 km/s), linear scale heights (~103 pc FWHM), and H2 masses per unit length (~4.3 x 10^6 Mo/kpc) that agree to 26% or better. Guided by the CO, we have also identified the Far Arm in high-resolution 21 cm data and find, subject to the poorly known CO-to-H2 ratio in these objects, that both arms are predominately molecular by a factor of 3-4. The detection of these symmetric expanding arms provides strong support for the existence of a bar at the center of our Galaxy and should allow better determination of the bar's physical properties.

Rotational Spectroscopy of PAHs: Acenaphthene, Acenaphthylene and Fluorene

Pure rotational spectra of three polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons - acenaphthene, acenaphthylene and fluorene - have been obtained by Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy of a molecular beam and subsequently by millimeter wave absorption spectroscopy for acenaphthene and fluorene. The data presented here will be useful for deep radio astronomical searches for PAHs employing large radio telecopes.

First Astronomical Detection of the Cumulene Carbon Chain Molecule H_2C_6 in TMC1

The cumulene carbenes are important components of hydrocarbon chemistry in low mass star forming cores. Here we report the first astronomical detection of the long chain cumulene carbene H_2C_6 in the interstellar cloud TMC1, from observations of two of its rotational transitions: JK,K′=71,7→61,6J_{K,K'} = 7_{1,7} \rightarrow 6_{1,6} at 18.8 GHz and 81,8→71,78_{1,8} \rightarrow 7_{1,7} at 21.5 GHz, using NASA's Deep Space Network 70 m antenna at Goldstone, California. In addition we also observed the shorter cumulene carbene, H_2C_4 at the same position. The fractional abundance of H_2C_6 relative to H_2 is about 4.7×10−114.7 \times 10^{-11} and H_2C_4 is about 1.1×10−91.1 \times 10^{-9}. The abundance of H_2C_6 is in fairly good agreement with gas phase chemical models for young molecular cloud cores, but the abundance of H_2C_4 is significantly larger than predicted.
