Physics at a 100 TeV pp collider: Standard Model processes

This report summarises the properties of Standard Model processes at the 100 TeV pp collider. We document the production rates and typical distributions for a number of benchmark Standard Model processes, and discuss new dynamical phenomena arising at the highest energies available at this collider. We discuss the intrinsic physics interest in the measurement of these Standard Model processes, as well as their role as backgrounds for New Physics searches.

Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 3. Higgs Properties

This Report summarizes the results of the activities in 2012 and the first half of 2013 of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the state of the art of Higgs Physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. This report follows the first working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002) and the second working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002). After the discovery of a Higgs boson at the LHC in mid-2012 this report focuses on refined prediction of Standard Model (SM) Higgs phenomenology around the experimentally observed value of 125-126 GeV, refined predictions for heavy SM-like Higgs bosons as well as predictions in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and first steps to go beyond these models. The other main focus is on the extraction of the characteristics and properties of the newly discovered particle such as couplings to SM particles, spin and CP-quantum numbers etc.

Associated production of charged Higgs bosons and top quarks with POWHEG

The associated production of charged Higgs bosons and top quarks at hadron colliders is an important discovery channel to establish the existence of a non-minimal Higgs sector. Here, we present details of a next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation of this process using the Catani-Seymour dipole formalism and describe its implementation in POWHEG, which allows to match NLO calculations to parton showers. Numerical predictions are presented using the PYTHIA parton shower and are compared to those obtained previously at fixed order, to a leading order calculation matched to the PYTHIA parton shower, and to a different NLO calculation matched to the HERWIG parton shower with MC@NLO. We also present numerical predictions and theoretical uncertainties for various Two Higgs Doublet Models at the Tevatron and LHC.

Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions

This Report summarises the results of the second year's activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the state of the art of Higgs Physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002) focuses on predictions (central values and errors) for total Higgs production cross sections and Higgs branching ratios in the Standard Model and its minimal supersymmetric extension, covering also related issues such as Monte Carlo generators, parton distribution functions, and pseudo-observables. This second Report represents the next natural step towards realistic predictions upon providing results on cross sections with benchmark cuts, differential distributions, details of specific decay channels, and further recent developments.

Implementation of electroweak corrections in the POWHEG BOX: single W production

We present a fully consistent implementation of electroweak and strong radiative corrections to single W hadroproduction in the POWHEG BOX framework, treating soft and collinear photon emissions on the same ground as coloured parton emissions. This framework can be easily extended to more complex electroweak processes. We describe how next-to-leading order (NLO) electroweak corrections are combined with the NLO QCD calculation, and show how they are interfaced to QCD and QED shower Monte Carlo. The resulting tool fills a gap in the literature and allows to study comprehensively the interplay of QCD and electroweak effects to W production using a single computational framework. Numerical comparisons with the predictions of the electroweak generator HORACE, as well as with existing results on the combination of electroweak and QCD corrections to W production, are shown for the LHC energies, to validate the reliability and accuracy of the approach

Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables

This Report summarizes the results of the first 10 months' activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Sections Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the status-of-art on Higgs Physics at the LHC integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The Report is more than a mere collection of the proceedings of the general meetings. The subgroups have been working in different directions. An attempt has been made to present the first Report from these subgroups in a complete and homogeneous form. The subgroups' contributions correspondingly comprise the main parts of the Report. A significant amount of work has been performed in providing higher-order corrections to the Higgs-boson cross sections and pinning down the theoretical uncertainty of the Standard Model predictions. This Report comprises explicit numerical results on total cross sections, leaving the issues of event selection cuts and differential distributions to future publications. The subjects for further study are identified.

Recent developments in POWHEG

I review recent developments in POWHEG, a method for interfacing parton-shower generators with NLO QCD computations. I illustrate recent progress in understanding several features of the method, and in clarifying similarity and differences with respect to MC@NLO. Furthermore, I briefly describe a recently introduced framework, the POWHEG BOX, that allows the automatic POWHEG implementation of any given NLO calculation, and has been recently applied to Z+jet production and to Higgs production via vector-boson fusion.

QCD analysis of first b cross section data at 1.96 TeV

The first data on bottom quark production in p-pbar collisions at 1.96 TeV have recently been obtained by the CDF collaboration. These data probe the region of pt~0, providing a new invaluable input on the issue of the compatibility between next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD and data. We reconsider the evaluation of the b cross section, in view of recent theoretical developments, and of the latest inputs on structure function fits. We show that the new CDF measurements are in good agreement with NLO QCD. If CDF preliminary data are confirmed, a long-standing discrepancy between NLO QCD predictions and hadron-collider data can be settled.

Sudakov resummation of multiparton QCD cross sections

We present the general expressions for the resummation, up to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, of Sudakov-type logarithms in processes with an arbirtrary number of hard-scattering partons. These results document the formulae used by the authors in several previous phenomenological studies. The resummation formulae presented here, which are valid for phase-space factorizable observables, determine the resummation correction in a process-independent fashion. All process dependence is encoded in the colour and flavour structure of the leading order and virtual one-loop amplitudes, and in Sudakov weights associated to the cross section kinematics. We explicitly illustrate the application to the case of Drell--Yan and prompt-photon production.

The p_T Spectrum in Heavy-Flavour Photoproduction

We consider the transverse-momentum distribution of heavy flavours in photon-hadron collisions. We present a formalism in which large transverse-momentum logarithms are resummed to the next-to-leading level, and mass effects are included exactly up to order alpha_em alpha_s^2, so as to retain predictivity at both small and large transverse momenta. Phenomenological applications relevant to charm photoproduction at HERA are given.

Sudakov Resummation Effects in Prompt-Photon Hadroproduction

We compute the effects of soft-gluon resummation, at the next-to-leading-logarithmic level, in the fixed-target hadroproduction cross section for prompt photons. We find in general that the corrections to the fixed next-to-leading-order results are large for large renormalization scales, and small for small scales. This leads to a significant reduction of the scale dependence of the results for most experimental configurations of interest. We compare our results to the recent measurements by the E706 and UA6 collaborations.

Sudakov Resummation for Prompt-Photon Production in Hadron Collisions

We present the explicit expressions for the resummation of large-x Sudakov effects in the transverse-energy distribution of prompt-photons produced in hadronic collisions, to next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy. Fragmentation processes do not contribute to the Sudakov resummation at NLL level. In Mellin space, the resummed radiative factor factorizes in the product of independent radiators for the two initial and the one final coloured partons appearing in the Born process, times a simple factor describing the soft-gluon interferences between initial and final states. The formulae are given in terms of Mellin moments, and can be used for phenomenological applications using standard techniques for the inverse-Mellin transforms. The calculations presented in this work, when added to the existing works on DY and DIS production, complete the theoretical ground-work necessary to carry out global fits of parton densities with a uniform NLL accuracy in the large-x region.

The p_T Spectrum in Heavy-Flavour Hadroproduction

We consider the transverse-momentum distribution of heavy flavours in hadronic collisions. We present a formalism in which large transverse-momentum logarithms are resummed at the next-to-leading level, and mass effects are included exactly up to order α_strong^3, so as to retain predictivity at both small and large transverse momenta. As an example, we apply our formalism to b production at the Tevatron.

Next-to-Leading-Order Corrections to Momentum Correlations in $Z^0 \to b\bar{b}$

We recently completed a calculation of the process $e^+e^- \to Q\bar{Q}+X$, where Q is a heavy quark, at order $O(α_s^2)$. As a first application of this calculation we compute the momentum correlations of $b\bar{b}$ pairs at next-to-leading-order. This quantity is interesting since it may affect the determination of $R_b$ as measured in $Z^0$ decays. We find that the next-to-leading corrections are of moderate size, thus confirming the conclusions that can be drawn from the leading-order calculation.

On the Fragmentation Function for Heavy Quarks in e+e- collisions

We use a recent O(alpha_s^2) calculation of the differential cross section for the production of heavy quarks in e+e- annihilation to compute a few moments of the heavy quark single-inclusive production cross section. We verify that, contrary to some recent claims, the leading and next-to-leading logarithmic terms in this cross section are correctly given by the standard NLO fragmentation function formalism for heavy quark production.

A Study of Ultraviolet Renormalon Ambiguities in the Determination of $\as$ from $τ$ Decay

The divergent large-order behaviour of the perturbative series relevant for the determination of $\as$ from $τ$ decay is controlled by the leading ultraviolet (UV) renormalon. Even in the absence of the first infrared (IR) renormalon, an ambiguity of order $Λ^2/m_τ^2$ is introduced. We make a quantitative study of the practical implications of this ambiguity. We discuss the magnitude of UV renormalon corrections obtained in the large-$N_f$ limit, which, although unrealistic, is nevertheless interesting to some extent. We then study a number of improved approximants for the perturbative series, based on a change of variable in the Borel representation, such as to displace the leading UV renormalon singularity at a larger distance from the origin than the first IR renormalon. The spread of the resulting values of $\as(m^2_τ)$ obtained by different approximants, at different renormalization scales, is exhibited as a measure of the underlying ambiguities. Finally, on the basis of mathematical models, we discuss the prospects of an actual improvement, given the signs and magnitudes of the computed coefficients, the size of $\as(m^2_τ)$ and what is known of the asymptotic properties of the series. Our conclusion is that a realistic estimate of the theoretical error cannot go below $δ\as(m^2_τ) \sim \pm 0.060$, or $δ\as(m^2_{\sss Z}) \sim \pm 0.006$.

Top Quark Distributions in Hadronic Collisions

We present kinematical distributions for top quark pairs produced at the Tevatron \ppbar\ Collider, as predicted within Next-to-Leading-Order QCD. We consider single and double-inclusive distributions, and compare our results to those obtained with the shower Monte Carlo HERWIG. We discuss the implications of our findings for experimental issues such as the measurement of the top quark mass.

Improving the Weizsäcker-Williams Approximation in Electron-Proton Collisions

We critically examine the validity of the Weizsäcker-Williams approximation in electron-hadron collisions. We show that in its commonly used form it can lead to large errors, and we show how to improve it in order to get accurate results. In particular, we present an improved form that is valid beyond the leading logarithmic approximation in the case when a small-angle cut is applied to the scattered electron. Furthermore we include comparisons of the approximate expressions with the exact electroproduction calculation in the case of heavy-quark production.
