Spin-wave spectra in periodically surface-modulated ferromagnetic thin films

This article presents theoretical results for the dynamic response of periodically surface-modulated ferromagnetic thin films. For such system, the role of the periodic dipolar field induced by the modulation is addressed by using the plane-wave method. By controlling the geometry of the modulated volumes within the film, the frequency modes and spatial profiles of spin waves can be manipulated. The angular dependence of the frequency band-gaps unveils the influence of both dynamic and static magnetic charges, which reside in the edges of the etching periodic zones, and it is stablished that band-gap widths created by static magnetic charges are broader than the one created by dynamic magnetic charges. To corroborate the validity of the model, the theoretical results are compared with ferromagnetic resonance simulations, where a very good agreement is achieved between both methods. The theoretical model allows for a detailed understanding of the physics underlying these kind of systems, thereby providing an outlook to potential applications associated with magnonic crystals-based devices.

Effect of perpendicular uniaxial anisotropy on the annihilation fields of magnetic vortices

The magnetic vortex structure, that is present in several nanoscopic systems, is stable and can be manipulated through the application of a magnetic field or a spin polarized current. The size and shape of the core are strongly affected by the anisotropy, however its role on the core behavior has not yet been clarified. In the present work we investigate the influence of a perpendicular anisotropy on the annihilation and shape of magnetic vortex cores in permalloy disks. We have used both micromagnetic simulations with the OOMMF code, and an analytical model that assumes that the shape of the core does not change during the hysteresis cycle, known as the rigid core model, to calculate the annihilation fields. In both cases we found that the annihilation fields decrease with increasing perpendicular anisotropy for almost all the structures investigated. The simulations show that for increasing anisotropy or dot thickness, or both, the vortex core profile changes its shape, becoming elongated. For every dot thickness, this change does not depend on the dot radius, but on the relative distance of the core from the center of the dot.

Magnetic behavior of nanoparticles in patterned thin films

The magnetic behavior of truncated conical nanoparticles in patterned thin films is investigated as a function of their size and shape. Using a scaling technique, phase diagrams giving the relative stability of characteristic internal magnetic structures of the particles are obtained. The role of the uniaxial anisotropy in determining the magnetic properties of such systems is discussed, and a simple method for stablishing its strength is proposed.

Magnetostatic fields in tubular nanostructures

The non-uniform magnetostatic field produced by the equilibrium and non equilibrium magnetic states of magnetic nanotubes has been investigated theoretically. We consider magnetic fields produced by actual equilibrium states and transverse and vortex domain walls confined within the nanostructure. Our calculations allow us to understand the importance of the magnetostatic field in nanomagnetism, which is frequently considered as a uniform field. Moreover, our results can be used as a basis for future research of others properties, such as the investigation of spin waves when domain walls are present, or the motion of a magnetic particle near a magnetic field.

Properties of magnetic nanodots with perpendicular anisotropy

Nanodots with magnetic vortices have many potential applications, such as magnetic memories (VRAMs) and spin transfer nano-oscillators (STNOs). Adding a perpendicular anisotropy term to the magnetic energy of the nanodot it becomes possible to tune the vortex core properties. This can be obtained, e.g., in Co nanodots by varying the thickness of the Co layer in a Co/Pt stack. Here we discuss the spin configuration of circular and elliptical nanodots for different perpendicular anisotropies; we show for nanodisks that micromagnetic simulations and analytical results agree. Increasing the perpendicular anisotropy, the vortex core radii increase, the phase diagrams are modified and new configurations appear; the knowledge of these phase diagrams is relevant for the choice of optimum nanodot dimensions for applications. MFM measurements on Co/Pt multilayers confirm the trend of the vortex core diameters with varying Co layer thicknesses.

Scaling relations for magnetic nanoparticles

A detailed investigation of the scaling relations recently proposed by [J. d'Albuquerque e Castro, D. Altbir, J. C. Retamal, and P. Vargas, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 237202 (2002)] to study the magnetic properties of nanoparticles is presented. Analytical expressions for the total energy of three characteristic internal configurations of the particles are obtained, in terms of which the behavior of the magnetic phase diagram for those particles upon scaling of the exchange interaction is discussed. The exponent $η$ in scaling relations is shown to be dependent on the geometry of the vortex core, and results for specific cases are presented.

Magnetic phase diagrams of barcode-type nanostructures

The magnetic configurations of barcode-type magnetic nanostructures consisting of alternate ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic layers arranged within a multilayer nanotube structure are investigated as a function of their geometry. Based on a continuum approach we have obtained analytical expressions for the energy which lead us to obtain phase diagrams giving the relative stability of characteristic internal magnetic configurations of the barcode-type nanostructures.

A detailed analysis of dipolar interactions and analytical approximations in arrays of magnetic nanowires

The investigation of the role of interactions in magnetic wire arrays is complex and often subject to strong simplifications. In this paper we obtained analytical expressions for the magnetostatic interactions between wires and investigate the range of validity of dipole-dipole, first order and second order approximations. We also analyze the extension of the interwire magnetostatic interactions in a sample and found that the number of wires required to reach energy convergence in the array strongly depends on the relative magnetic orientation between the wires.
