On-demand generation of dark-bright soliton trains in Bose-Einstein condensates

The controlled creation of dark-bright (DB) soliton trains in multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) is a topic of ongoing interest. In this work we generalize earlier findings on the creation of dark soliton trains in single-component BECs [A. Romero-Ros et al., Phys. Rev. A 103, 023329 (2021)] to two-component BECs. By choosing suitable filled box-type initial configurations (FBTCs) and solving the direct scattering problem for the defocusing vector nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonzero boundary conditions we obtain analytical expressions for the DB soliton solutions produced by a general FBTC. It is found that the size of the initial box and the amount of filling directly affects the number, size, and velocity of the solitons, while the initial phase determines the parity (even or odd) of the solutions. Our analytical results are compared to direct numerical integration of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations, both in the absence and in the presence of a harmonic trap, and an excellent agreement between the two is demonstrated.

Superfluid flow past an obstacle in annular Bose--Einstein condensates

We investigate the flow of a one-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger model with periodic boundary conditions past an obstacle, motivated by recent experiments with Bose--Einstein condensates in ring traps. Above certain rotation velocities, localized solutions with a nontrivial phase profile appear. In striking difference from the infinite domain, in this case there are many critical velocities. At each critical velocity, the steady flow solutions disappear in a saddle-center bifurcation. These interconnected branches of the bifurcation diagram lead to additions of circulation quanta to the phase of the associated solution. This, in turn, relates to the manifestation of persistent current in numerous recent experimental and theoretical works, the connections to which we touch upon. The complex dynamics of the identified waveforms and the instability of unstable solution branches are demonstrated.

Nonlinear Low-to-High Frequency Energy Cascades in Diatomic Granular Crystals

We study wave propagation in strongly nonlinear 1D diatomic granular crystals under an impact load. Depending on the mass ratio of the `light' to `heavy' beads, this system exhibits rich wave dynamics from highly localized traveling waves to highly dispersive waves featuring strong attenuation. We experimentally demonstrate the nonlinear resonant and anti-resonant interactions of particles and verify that the nonlinear resonance results in strong wave attenuation, leading to highly efficient nonlinear energy cascading without relying on material damping. In this process, mechanical energy is transferred from low to high frequencies, while propagating waves emerge in both ordered and chaotic waveforms via a distinctive spatial cascading. This energy transfer mechanism from lower to higher frequencies and wavenumbers is of particular significance towards the design of novel nonlinear acoustic metamaterials with inherently passive energy redistribution properties.
