We respond to a critique 2512.23460[hep-ph] of our paper 2505.05634[hep-ph]
The failure to find evidence for elementary particles that could serve as the constituents of dark matter brings to mind suggestions that dark matter might consist of massive compact objects (MACHOs). In particular, it has recently been argued that MACHOs with masses > 15 solar masses may have been prolifically produced at the onset of the big bang. Although a variety of astrophysical signatures for primordial MACHOs with masses in this range have been discussed in the literature, we favor a strategy that uses the potential for gravitational microlensing of stars outside our galaxy to directly detect the presence of MACHOs in the halo of our galaxy. We point out that the effect of the motion of the Earth on the shape of the microlensing brightening curves provides a promising approach to confirming over the course of next several years that dark matter consists of MACHOs.
In this note, it is discussed why attempts to renormalize conventional quantum gravity may be based on a false presumption, because, according to Verlinde's entropic view of gravity, the gravitational force between two elementary particles vanishes.
The PMNS neutrino mixing matrix U_{PMNS} is in general a product of two unitary matrices U_{lep} and U_ν arising from the diagonalization of the charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices, U_{PMNS} = U^{\dagger}_{lep} U_ν. Assuming that U_ν is a bimaximal mixing matrix, we investigate the possible forms of U_{lep}. We identify three possible generic structures of U_{lep}, which are compatible with the existing data on neutrino mixing. One corresponds to a hierarchical ``CKM-like'' matrix. In this case relatively large values of the solar neutrino mixing angle θ_{sol}, and of |U_{e3}|^2, are typically predicted, \tan^2θ_{sol} \gtap 0.42, |U_{e3}|^2 \gtap 0.02, while the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle θ_{atm} can deviate noticeably from π/4, \sin^2 2θ_{atm} \gtap 0.95. The second corresponds to one of the mixing angles in U_{lep} being equal to π/2, and predicts practically maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing \sin^2 2θ_{atm} \simeq 1. Large atmospheric neutrino mixing, \sin^2 2θ_{atm} \gtap 0.95, is naturally predicted by the third possible generic structure of U_{lep}, which corresponds to all three mixing angles in U_{lep} being large. We focus especially on the case of CP-nonconservation, analyzing it in detail. We show how the CP-violating phases, arising from the diagonalization of the neutrino and charged lepton mass matrices, contribute to the measured neutrino mixing observables.
The possibility that non-supersymmetric conformal field theories softly broken below 100 TeV may provide an alternative to conventional grand unification is explored. We consider a low energy theory presumed to be of this type arising from the Type IIB superstring compactified on a $AdS_5 \times S_5/Γ$ space whose gauge group and the particle content are severely restricted by the compactification process. We present an example of a resulting $SU(4)_c\times SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ with three generations, which leads to coupling unification and a prediction for $sin^2θ_W\simeq .227$ and other phenomenology generally consistent with observations.
We examine certain extensions of the standard model in which $CP$ violation is spontaneous and the strong $CP$ problem is resolved. In these models, the $3 \times 3$ quark mixing matrix is neither real nor unitary. However, to a precision of 0.1%, it is real and orthogonal. There are no readily observable $CP$-violating effects besides those in the neutral kaon system.
By extending the standard gauge group to $SU(3)_c \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y \times U(1)_X$ with $X$ charges carried only by the third family we accommodate the LEP measurement of $R_b$ and predict a potentially measurable discrepancy in $A_{FB}^{b}$ in $e^+e^-$ scattering and that $D^0 \bar D^0$ mixing may be near its experimental limit. The uniqueness of our model is that the Z' couplings are generation-dependent and hence explicitly violate the GIM mechanism, but can nevertheless be naturally consistent with FCNC constraints. Direct detection of this Z' is possible but challenging.
