Excitation temperature of C2 and broadening of the 6196A diffuse interstellar band

This paper presents a finding of the correlation between the width of a strong diffuse interstellar band at 6196A and the excitation temperature of C2 based on high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio spectra. The excitation temperature was determined from absorption lines of the Phillips A-X and Mulliken D-X systems. The width and shape of the narrow 6196A DIB profile apparently depend on the C2 temperature, being broader for higher values.

Electron density and carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands

We have used the ionisation equilibrium equation to derive the electron density in interstellar clouds in the direction to 13 stars. A linear relation was found, that allows the determination of the electron density from the Mg I and Mg II column densities in diffuse clouds. The comparison of normalised equivalent width of 12 DIBs with the electron density shows that the DIBs equivalent width do not change with electron density varying in the range ne=0.01-2.5 cm^-3. Therefore the DIBs carriers (1) can be observed only in one ionisation stage, or (2) the DIBs are arising in cloud regions (eg. cores or cloud coronas) for which we can not determine the electron density.

Physical conditions in CaFe interstellar clouds

Interstellar clouds that exhibit strong Ca I and Fe I lines were called CaFe clouds. The ionisation equilibrium equations were used to model the column densities of Ca II, Ca I, K I, Na I, Fe I and Ti II in CaFe clouds. The chemical composition of CaFe clouds is that of the Solar System and no depletion of elements onto dust grains is seen. The CaFe clouds have high electron densities n=1 cm^-3 that leads to high column densities of neutral Ca and Fe.

Composition of the Interstellar Medium

We present an analysis of the Fe II, Ge II, Mg I, Mg II, S I, S II, Si II and Zn II interstellar lines for 63 stars. The column density of Mg II, S II, Si II and Zn II is well correlated with the distance. However, the column density -- distance relation should be used with care for the estimation of the distance to OB stars. For stars with large $f(H_2)$ this relation can lead to a large overestimation of the distance. Hydrogen -- normalised column densities of Mg II, Si II and Ge II (our largest samples of data) drop with the interstellar reddening E(B-V) as expected for elements that are incorporated into dust grains. The Ge II abundance (GeII/H) is lower in dense molecular clouds. The abundances of all analysed elements are generally lower than their Solar System values.
