Universal dynamics of a turbulent superfluid Bose gas

We study the emergence of universal scaling in the time-evolving momentum distribution of a harmonically trapped three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate, parametrically driven to a turbulent state. We demonstrate that the out-of-equilibrium dynamics post excitation is described by a single function due to nearby non-thermal fixed points. The observed behavior connects the dynamics of a quantum turbulent state to several far-from-equilibrium phenomena. We present a controllable protocol to explore universality in such systems, obtaining scaling exponents that can serve as reference for future theoretical investigations. Our experimental results thus offer a promising route to investigate the complex dynamics of the quantum turbulent regime under a novel perspective.

Exploring emergent heterogeneous phases in strongly repulsive Fermi gases

Recent experiments have revitalized the interest in a Fermi gas of ultracold atoms with strong repulsive interactions. In spite of its seeming simplicity, this system exhibits a complex behavior, resulting from the competing action of two distinct instabilities: ferromagnetism, which promotes spin anticorrelations and domain formation; and pairing, that renders the repulsive fermionic atoms unstable towards forming weakly bound bosonic molecules. The breakdown of the homogeneous repulsive Fermi liquid arising from such concurrent mechanisms has been recently observed in real time through pump-probe spectroscopic techniques [A. Amico et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 253602 (2018)]. These studies also lead to the discovery of an emergent metastable many-body state, an unpredicted quantum emulsion of anticorrelated fermions and pairs. Here, we investigate in detail the properties of such an exotic regime by studying the evolution of kinetic and release energies, the spectral response and coherence of the unpaired fermionic population, and its spin-density noise correlations. All our observations consistently point to a low-temperature heterogeneous phase, where paired and unpaired fermions macroscopically coexist while featuring micro-scale phase separation. Our findings open new appealing avenues for the exploration of quantum emulsions and also possibly of inhomogeneous superfluid regimes, where pair condensation may coexist with magnetic order.

Twisted unwinding of multi-charged quantum vortex and generation of turbulence in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

We report the observation of the twisted decay of quadruply charged vortices in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. Supporting numerical simulations show that the singly-charged vortices, which result from the decay of a multi-charged vortex, twist around intertwined in the shape of helical Kelvin waves. Finally, we propose to apply this effect to generate an almost isotropic state of turbulence which we characterize in terms of the velocity statistics.

Nonlinear dependence observed in quadrupolar collective excitation of a trapped BEC

We report the experimental observation of the collective excitations induced in a magnetically trapped 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensate. Low-lying mode excitations were studied by tracking the condensate's center-of-mass displacement, and its aspect ratio as a function of the hold time in the trap. We were able to partially control the modes onset by modulating the amplitude of the additional field gradient used to excite the BEC. The measured excitation frequencies were found to be in good agreement with the literature. We have also found that the modulation amplitude was able to change the phase of the center-of-mass oscillation. Finally, an interesting, non-linear dependence was observed on the condensate aspect ratio as a function of the perturbing amplitude which induces the quadrupolar mode.

Three-vortex configurations in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

We report on the creation of three-vortex clusters in a $^{87}Rb$ Bose-Einstein condensate by oscillatory excitation of the condensate. This procedure can create vortices of both circulation, so that we are able to create several types of vortex clusters using the same mechanism. The three-vortex configurations are dominated by two types, namely, an equilateral-triangle arrangement and a linear arrangement. We interpret these most stable configurations respectively as three vortices with the same circulation, and as a vortex-antivortex-vortex cluster. The linear configurations are very likely the first experimental signatures of predicted stationary vortex clusters.
