Isospin Mixing and the Cubic Isobaric Multiplet Mass Equation in the Lowest T = 2, A = 32 Quintet

The isobaric multiplet mass equation (IMME) is known to break down in the first T = 2, A = 32 isospin quintet. In this work we combine high-resolution experimental data with state-of-the-art shell-model calculations to investigate isospin mixing as a possible cause for this violation. The experimental data are used to validate isospin-mixing matrix elements calculated with newly developed shell-model Hamiltonians. Our analysis shows that isospin mixing with nonanalog T = 1 states contributes to the IMME breakdown, making the requirement of an anomalous cubic term inevitable for the multiplet.

Proton capture on 30^{30}P in novae: On the existence of states at 6.406.40 MeV and 6.656.65 MeV in 31^{31}S

We use a high resolution 32S(d,t)^{32}{\rm S}(d,t) measurement to investigate the claimed existence of a 6401(3) keV state in 31^{31}S that may affect the 30P(p,γ)^{30}{\rm P}(p,γ) nuclear reaction rate in oxygen-neon (ONe) novae. Our data are shown to exclude the null hypothesis - that the state does not exist - with high significance. Additionally, the data also suggest the existence of a hitherto unreported state at 6648(4) keV. This state corresponds to a 30P(p,γ)^{30}{\rm P}(p,γ) resonance at 517(4)517(4) keV, located below the higher edge of the Gamow window for peak nova temperatures of about 0.4 GK.

Spectroscopic studies of neutron-rich 129^{129}In and its ββ-decay daughter, 129^{129}Sn, using the GRIFFIN spectrometer

The ββ-decay of neutron-rich 129^{129}In into 129^{129}Sn was studied using the GRIFFIN spectrometer at the ISAC facility at TRIUMF. The study observed the half-lives of the ground state and each of the ββ-decaying isomers. The level scheme of 129^{129}Sn has been expanded with thirty-one new γγ-ray transitions and nine new excited levels, leading to a re-evaluation of the ββ-branching ratios and level spin assignments. The observation of the ββ-decay of the (29/2+^{+}) 1911-keV isomeric state in 129^{129}In is reported for the first time, with a branching ratio of 2.0(5)%\%.

ββ Decay of 132^{132}In and Spectroscopy of 132^{132}Sn and 131^{131}Sb with the GRIFFIN Spectrometer

Spectroscopy of doubly magic 50132^{132}_{50}Sn82_{82} has been performed with the GRIFFIN spectrometer at TRIUMF-ISAC following the ββ decay of 49132^{132}_{49}In83_{83}. The analysis has allowed for the placement of a total of 70 transitions and 29 excited states in 132^{132}Sn. Detailed spectroscopy has also been performed on 131^{131}Sb, resulting from the ββ decay of 131^{131}Sn, produced from the ββ-delayed neutron decay of 132^{132}In. Measurement of γγ-rays in both 131^{131}Sn and 131^{131}Sb has led to the determination of the ββ-delayed neutron emission probability, PnP_{n}, from 132^{132}In. This is the first time the PnP_{n} has been measured for this nucleus using γγ spectroscopy, and the new value of 12.3(4)% is consistent with the most recent β−nβ-n counting experiment. Additionally, γγ-γγ angular correlations have been performed in 132^{132}Sn, supporting the spin assignments of several excited states. Novel ab initio calculations are presented which describe several of the excited states, and these are compared to the experimental spectrum.

Benchmarking 136^{136}Xe Neutrinoless ββββ Decay Matrix Element Calculations with the 138Ba(p,t)^{138}{\rm Ba}(p,t) Reaction

We used a high-resolution magnetic spectrograph to study neutron pair-correlated 0+0^+ states in 136^{136}Ba, produced via the 138Ba(p,t)^{138}{\rm Ba}(p,t) reaction. In conjunction with state-of-the-art shell model calculations, these data benchmark part of the dominant Gamow-Teller component of the nuclear matrix element (NME) for 136^{136}Xe neutrinoless double beta (0νββ0νββ) decay. We demonstrate for the first time an evaluation of part of a 0νββ0νββ decay NME by use of an experimental observable, presenting a new avenue of approach for more accurate calculations of 0νββ0νββ decay matrix elements.

Collective 2p-2h intruder states in 118^{118}Sn studied via ββ-decay of 118^{118}In using GRIFFIN

The low-lying structure of semi-magic 118^{118}Sn has been investigated through the ββ-decay of 118^{118}In (T1/2=4.45T_{1/2}=4.45 min) to study shape coexistence via the reduced transition probabilities of states in the 2p-2h proton intruder band. This high-statistics study was carried out at TRIUMF-ISAC with the GRIFFIN spectrometer. In total, 99 transitions have been placed in the level scheme with 43 being newly observed. Three low-lying γγ-ray transitions with energies near 285 keV have been resolved from which the 2intr.+→0intr.+^+_{\mathrm{intr.}} \rightarrow 0^+_{\mathrm{intr.}} 284.52-keV transition was determined to have half of the previous branching fraction leading to a B(E2;22+→02+)B(E2;2^+_2\rightarrow 0^+_2) of 21(4) W.u. compared to 39(7) W.u. from the previous measurement. Calculations using sdsd IBM-2 with mixing have also been made to compare the experimental B(E2)B(E2) values to the theoretical values and to make comparisons to the 114,116^{114,116}Sn isotopes previously studied using the same theoretical model.

Decay Spectroscopy of 129^{129}Cd

Excited states of 129^{129}In populated following the ββ-decay of 129^{129}Cd were experimentally studied with the GRIFFIN spectrometer at the ISAC facility of TRIUMF, Canada. A 480-MeV proton beam was impinged on a uranium carbide target and 129^{129}Cd was extracted using the Ion Guide Laser Ion Source (IG-LIS). ββ- and γγ-rays following the decay of 129^{129}Cd were detected with the GRIFFIN spectrometer comprising the plastic scintillator SCEPTAR and 16 high-purity germanium (HPGe) clover-type detectors. %, along with the ββ-particles were detected with SCEPTAR. From the ββ-γγ-γγ coincidence analysis, 32 new transitions and 7 new excited states were established, expanding the previously known level scheme of 129^{129}In. The log⁡ft\log ft values deduced from the ββ-feeding intensities suggest that some of the high-lying states were populated by the ν0g7/2→π0g9/2ν0 g_{7/2} \rightarrow π0 g_{9/2} allowed Gamow-Teller (GT) transition, which indicates that the allowed GT transition is more dominant in the 129^{129}Cd decay than previously reported. Observation of fragmented Gamow-Teller strengths is consistent with theoretical calculations.

Evolution of Octupole Deformation in Radium Nuclei from Coulomb Excitation of Radioactive 222^{222}Ra and 228^{228}Ra Beams

There is sparse direct experimental evidence that atomic nuclei can exhibit stable pear shapes arising from strong octupole correlations. In order to investigate the nature of octupole collectivity in radium isotopes, electric octupole (E3E3) matrix elements have been determined for transitions in 222,228^{222,228}Ra nuclei using the method of sub-barrier, multi-step Coulomb excitation. Beams of the radioactive radium isotopes were provided by the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The observed pattern of EE3 matrix elements for different nuclear transitions is explained by describing 222^{222}Ra as pear-shaped with stable octupole deformation, while 228^{228}Ra behaves like an octupole vibrator.

First candidates for γ vibrational bands built on the [505]11/2- neutron orbital in odd-A Dy isotopes

Rotational structures have been measured using the Jurogam II and GAMMASPHERE arrays at low spin following the 155Gd(α,2n)157Dy and 148Nd(12C, 5n)155Dy reactions at 25 and 65 MeV, respectively. We report high-K bands, which are conjectured to be the first candidates of a Kπ= 2+ γ vibrational band, built on the [505]11/2- neutron orbital, in both odd-A 155, 157Dy isotopes. The coupling of the first excited K=0+ states or the so-called \b{eta} vibrational bands at 661 and 676 keV in 154Dy and 156Dy to the [505]11/2- orbital, to produce a Kπ=11/2- band, was not observed in both 155Dy and 157Dy, respectively. The implication of these findings on the interpretation of the first excited 0+ states in the core nuclei 154Dy and 156Dy are also discussed.

Observation of γγ-vibrations and alignments built on non-ground-state configurations in 156Dy

The exact nature of the lowest Kπ=2γ+K^π=2_γ^+ rotational bands in all deformed nuclei remains obscure. Traditionally they are assumed to be collective vibrations of the nuclear shape in the γγ degree of freedom perpendicular to the nuclear symmetry axis. Very few such γγ-bands have been traced past the usual back-bending rotational alignments of high-j nucleons. We have investigated the structure of positive-parity bands in the N=90 nucleus 156Dy, using the 148Nd(12C,4n)156Dy reaction at 65 MeV, observing the resulting γγ-ray transitions with the Gammasphere array. The even- and odd-spin members of the Kπ=2γ+K^π=2_γ^+ γγ-band are observed to 32+ and 31+ respectively. This rotational band faithfully tracks the ground-state configuration to the highest spins. The members of a possible γγ-vibration built on the aligned yrast S-band are observed to spins 28+ and 27+. An even-spin positive-parity band, observed to spin 24+, is a candidate for an aligned S-band built on the seniority-zero configuration of the 02+0_2^+ state at 676 keV. The crossing of this band with the 02+0_2^+ band is at ℏω\hbarω= 0.28(1) MeV and is consistent with the configuration of the 02+0_2^+ band not producing any blocking of the monopole pairing.

Spectroscopy of low spin states in 157Dy: Search for evidence of enhanced octupole correlations

Low-spin states of 157Dy have been studied using the JUROGAM II array, following the 155Gd (α, 2n) reaction at a beam energy of 25 MeV. The level scheme of 157Dy has been expanded with four new bands. Rotational structures built on the [523]5/2- and [402]3/2+ neutron orbitals constitute new additions to the level scheme as do many of the inter- and intra-band transitions. This manuscript also reports the observation of cross I- to (I-1)- and I- to (I-1)+ E1 dipole transitions inter-linking structures built on the [523]5/2- (band 5) and [402]3/2+ (band 7) neutron orbitals. These interlacing band structures are interpreted as the bands of parity doublets with simplex quantum number s = -i related to possible octupole correlations.

The observation of vibrating pear shapes in radon nuclei: update

There is a large body of evidence that atomic nuclei can undergo octupole distortion and assume the shape of a pear. This phenomenon is important for measurements of electric-dipole moments of atoms, which would indicate CP violation and hence probe physics beyond the standard model of particle physics. Isotopes of both radon and radium have been identified as candidates for such measurements. Here, we have observed the low-lying quantum states in 224^{224}Rn and 226^{226}Rn by accelerating beams of these radioactive nuclei. We report here additional states not assigned in our 2019 publication. We show that radon isotopes undergo octupole vibrations but do not possess static pear-shapes in their ground states. We conclude that radon atoms provide less favourable conditions for the enhancement of a measurable atomic electric-dipole moment.

Detailed spectroscopy of 46^{46}Ca: A study of the β−β^- decay of 46^{46}K

We report on high-statistics data from the β−β^- decay of the 46^{46}K JπJ^π = 2−^- ground state taken with the GRIFFIN spectrometer located at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility. In total, 199 γγ rays and 42 excited states were placed in the level scheme, and from the observed ββ feeding and angular correlations of pairs of cascading γγ rays, it was possible to assign spins and parities to excited states and determine mixing ratios for selected γγ rays. The level structure of 46^{46}Ca is compared to theoretical predictions from a microscopic valence-space Hamiltonian derived from two- (NN) and three-nucleon (3N) forces. These calculations are in reasonable agreement with the experimental data and indicate that the protons in this region are not as inert as would be expected for semi-magic nuclei.

A Search for 0+0^+ States in 50^{50}Cr: Implications for the Superallowed ββ-decay of 50^{50}Mn

A 52^{52}Cr(p,t)(p,t)50^{50}Cr two-neutron pickup reaction was performed using the Q3D magnetic spectrograph at the Maier-Leibnitz-Laboratorium in Garching, Germany. Excited states in 50^{50}Cr were observed up to an excitation energy of 5.3 MeV. Despite significantly increased sensitivity and resolution over previous work, no evidence of the previously assigned first excited 0+0^+ state was found. As a result, the 02+0^+_2 state is reassigned at an excitation energy of Ex=3895.0(5)E_x=3895.0(5) keV in 50^{50}Cr. This reassignment directly impacts direct searches for a non-analogue Fermi β+β^+ decay branch in 50^{50}Mn. These results also show better systematic agreement with the theoretical predictions for the 0+0^+ state spectrum in 50^{50}Cr using the same formalism as the isospin-symmetry-breaking correction calculations for superallowed nuclei. The experimental data are also compared to abab-initioinitio shell-model predictions using the IM-SRG formalism based on NNNN and 3N3N forces from chiral-EFT in the pfpf-shell for the first time.

High-Precision Measurement of the 19Ne Half-Life and Implications for Right-Handed Weak Currents

We report a precise determination of the 19Ne half-life to be T1/2=17.262±0.007T_{1/2} = 17.262 \pm 0.007 s. This result disagrees with the most recent precision measurements and is important for placing bounds on predicted right-handed interactions that are absent in the current Standard Model. We are able to identify and disentangle two competing systematic effects that influence the accuracy of such measurements. Our findings prompt a reassessment of results from previous high-precision lifetime measurements that used similar equipment and methods.

Evidence for Shape Co-existence at medium spin in 76Rb

Four previously known rotational bands in 76Rb have been extended to moderate spins using the Gammasphere and Microball gamma ray and charged particle detector arrays and the 40Ca(40Ca,3pn) reaction at a beam energy of 165 MeV. The properties of two of the negative-parity bands can only readily be interpreted in terms of the highly successful Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model calculations if they have the same configuration in terms of the number of g9/2 particles, but they result from different nuclear shapes (one near-oblate and the other near-prolate). These data appear to constitute a unique example of shape co-existing structures at medium spins.
