Design study for a 500 MeV positron beam at the Mainz Microtron MAMI

A design study has been performed for a positron beam with an energy of 500 MeV to be realized at the applied physics area of the Mainz Microtron MAMI. Positrons will be created after pair conversion of bremsstrahlung, produced by the 855 MeV electron beam af MAMI in a tungsten converter target. From the two conceivable geometries (i) pair conversion in the bremsstrahlung converter target itself, and (ii) bremsstrahlung pair conversion in a separated lead foil, the former was considered in detail. Positrons will be energy selected within an outside open electron beam-line bending magnet, and bent back by an additional sector magnet. Magnetic focusing elements in between are designed to prepare in a well shielded positron target chamber about 6 m away from the target a beam with horizontal and vertical emittances of epsilon_v = 0.055 pi mm mrad (1 sigma), and epsilon_h = 0.12 pi mm mrad (1 sigma), respectively, for a 10 micro m thick amorphous tungsten target and negligible momentum spread. At an accepted positron band width of 1 MeV, spots are expected vertically with an angular spread of 0.064 mrad and a size of 5.0 mm (FWHM), and horizontally with an angular spread of 0.64 mrad and a size of 7.7 mm (FWHM). The positron yield amounts to 13.1 per second, 1 MeV positron energy band width, and 1 nA electron beam current.

Measurement of the helicity dependence for single π0π^{0} photoproduction from the deuteron

The helicity-dependent single π0π^{0} photoproduction cross section on the deuteron and the angular dependence of the double polarisation observable EE for the quasi-free single π0π^0 production off the proton and the neutron have been measured for the first time from the threshold region up to the photon energy 1.4 GeV. The experiment was performed at the tagged photon facility of the MAMI accelerator and used a circularly polarised photon beam and longitudinally polarised deuteron target. The reaction products were detected using the large acceptance Crystal Ball/TAPS calorimeter, which covered 97% of the full solid angle. Comparing the cross section from the deuteron with the sum of free nucleon cross sections provides a quantitative estimate of the effects of the nuclear medium on pion production. In contrast, comparison of EE helicity asymmetry data from quasi-free protons off deuterium with data from a free proton target indicates that nuclear effects do not significantly affect this observable. As a consequence, it is deduced that the helicity asymmetry EE on a free neutron can be reliably extracted from measurements on a deuteron in quasi-free kinematics.

Helicity-dependent cross sections for the photoproduction of π0π^0 pairs from nucleons

The double-polarization observable EE and helicity-dependent cross sections σ1/2σ_{1/2}, σ3/2σ_{3/2} have been measured for the photoproduction of π0π^0 pairs off quasi-free protons and neutrons at the Mainz MAMI accelerator with the Crystal Ball/TAPS setup. A circularly polarized photon beam was produced by bremsstrahlung from longitudinally polarized electrons and impinged on a longitudinally polarized deuterated butanol target. The reaction products were detected with an almost 4π4π covering calorimeter. The results reveal for the first time the helicity- and isospin-dependent structure of the γN→Nπ0π0γN\rightarrow Nπ^0π^0 reaction. They are compared to predictions from reaction models in view of nucleon resonance contributions and also to a refit of one model that predicted results for the proton and for the neutron target. The comparison of the prediction and the refit demonstrate the large impact of the new data.

Measurement of the beam-helicity asymmetry in photoproduction of π0ηπ^{0}η pairs on carbon, aluminum, and lead

The beam-helicity asymmetry was measured, for the first time, in photoproduction of π0ηπ^{0}η pairs on carbon, aluminum, and lead, with the A2 experimental setup at MAMI. The results are compared to an earlier measurement on a free proton and to the corresponding theoretical calculations. The Mainz model is used to predict the beam-helicity asymmetry for the nuclear targets. The present results indicate that the photoproduction mechanism for π0ηπ^{0}η pairs on nuclei is similar to photoproduction on a free nucleon. This process is dominated by the D33D_{33} partial wave with the ηΔ(1232)ηΔ(1232) intermediate state.

New data on γ⃗p⃗→ηp\vecγ \vec{p}\rightarrow ηp with polarized photons and protons and their implications for N∗→NηN^* \to Nη decays

The polarization observables T,E,P,HT, E, P, H, and GG in photoproduction of ηη mesons off protons are measured for photon energies from threshold to W=2400 W=2400\,MeV (TT), 2280 MeV (EE), 1620 MeV (P,HP, H), or 1820 MeV (GG), covering nearly the full solid angle. The data are compared to predictions from the SAID, MAID, JüBo, and BnGa partial-wave analyses. A refit within the BnGa approach including further data yields precise branching ratios for the NηNη decay of nucleon resonances. A NηNη-branching ratio of 0.33±0.040.33\pm 0.04 for N(1650)1/2−N(1650)1/2^- is found, which reduces the large and controversially discussed NηNη-branching ratio difference of the two lowest mass JP=1/2−J^P=1/2^--resonances significantly.

Signatures of the d∗(2380)d^*(2380) hexaquark in d(γγ,pn⃗p\vec{n})

We report a measurement of the spin polarisation of the recoiling neutron in deuterium photodisintegration, utilising a new large acceptance polarimeter within the Crystal Ball at MAMI. The measured photon energy range of 300~--~700~MeV provides the first measurement of recoil neutron polarisation at photon energies where the quark substructure of the deuteron plays a role, thereby providing important new constraints on photodisintegration mechanisms. A very high neutron polarisation in a narrow structure centred around Eγ∼E_γ\sim~570~MeV is observed, which is inconsistent with current theoretical predictions employing nucleon resonance degrees of freedom. A Legendre polynomial decomposition suggests this behaviour could be related to the excitation of the d∗(2380)d^*(2380) hexaquark.

Experimental study of the γp→K0Σ+γp\rightarrow K^0Σ^+, γn→K0Λγn\rightarrow K^0Λ, and γn→K0Σ0γn\rightarrow K^0 Σ^0 reactions at the Mainz Microtron

This work measured dσ/dΩdσ/dΩ for neutral kaon photoproduction reactions from threshold up to a c.m.\ energy of 1855MeV, focussing specifically on the γp→K0Σ+γp\rightarrow K^0Σ^+, γn→K0Λγn\rightarrow K^0Λ, and γn→K0Σ0γn\rightarrow K^0 Σ^0 reactions. Our results for γn→K0Σ0γn\rightarrow K^0 Σ^0 are the first-ever measurements for that reaction. These data will provide insight into the properties of N∗N^* resonances and, in particular, will lead to an improved knowledge about those states that couple only weakly to the πNπN channel. Integrated cross sections were extracted by fitting the differential cross sections for each reaction as a series of Legendre polynomials and our results are compared with prior experimental results and theoretical predictions.

Experimental access to Transition Distribution Amplitudes with the PANDA experiment at FAIR

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion (πNπN) TDAs from pˉp→e+e−π0\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0 reaction with the future PANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair q2q^2, the amplitude of the signal channel pˉp→e+e−π0\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0 admits a QCD factorized description in terms of πNπN TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring pˉp→e+e−π0\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0 with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. pˉp→π+π−π0\bar{p}p \to π^+π^- π^0 were performed for the center of mass energy squared s=5s = 5 GeV2^2 and s=10s = 10 GeV2^2, in the kinematic regions 3.0<q2<4.33.0 < q^2 < 4.3 GeV2^2 and 5<q2<95 < q^2 < 9 GeV2^2, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone ∣cos⁡θπ0∣>0.5| \cosθ_{π^0}| > 0.5 in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the PANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of 5⋅1075\cdot 10^7 (1⋅1071\cdot 10^7) at low (high) q2q^2 for s=5s=5 GeV2^2, and of 1⋅1081\cdot 10^8 (6⋅1066\cdot 10^6) at low (high) q2q^2 for s=10s=10 GeV2^2, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around 40%40\%. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to 22 fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. (.../...)

Feasibility studies of time-like proton electromagnetic form factors at PANDA at FAIR

Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form factors at \PANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel pˉp→e+e−\bar p p \to e^+ e^- is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, i.e.\textit{i.e.} pˉp→π+π−\bar p p \to π^+ π^-, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector performance.

Momentum dependence of the imaginary part of the ωω- and η′η^\prime-nucleus optical potential

The photoproduction of ωω and η′η^\prime mesons off carbon and niobium nuclei has been measured as a function of the meson momentum for incident photon energies of 1.2-2.9 GeV at the electron accelerator ELSA. The mesons have been identified via the ω→π0γ→3γω\rightarrow π^0 γ\rightarrow 3 γ and η′→π0π0η→6γη^\prime\rightarrow π^0 π^0η\rightarrow 6 γ decays, respectively, registered with the CBELSA/TAPS detector system. From the measured meson momentum distributions the momentum dependence of the transparency ratio has been determined for both mesons. Within a Glauber analysis the in-medium ωω and η′η^\prime widths and the corresponding absorption cross sections have been deduced as a function of the meson momentum. The results are compared to recent theoretical predictions for the in-medium ωω width and η′η^\prime-N absorption cross sections. The energy dependence of the imaginary part of the ωω- and η′η^\prime-nucleus optical potential has been extracted. The finer binning of the present data compared to the existing data allows a more reliable extrapolation towards the production threshold. The modulus of the imaginary part of the η′η^\prime nucleus potential is found to be about three times smaller than recently determined values of the real part of the η′η^\prime-nucleus potential, which makes the η′η^\prime meson a suitable candidate for the search for meson-nucleus bound states. For the ωω meson, the modulus of the imaginary part near threshold is comparable to the modulus of the real part of the potential. As a consequence, only broad structures can be expected which makes the observation of ωω mesic states very difficult experimentally.

Photon asymmetry measurements of γ→p→π0p\overrightarrowγ \mathrm{p} \rightarrow π^{0} \mathrm{p} for Eγ_γ=320−-650 MeV

High statistics measurements of the photon asymmetry Σ\mathrmΣ for the γ→\overrightarrowγp→π0\rightarrowπ^{0}p reaction have been made in the center of mass energy range W=1214-1450 MeV. The data were measured with the MAMI A2 real photon beam and Crystal Ball/TAPS detector systems in Mainz, Germany. The results significantly improve the existing world data and are shown to be in good agreement with previous measurements, and with the MAID, SAID, and Bonn-Gatchina predictions. We have also combined the photon asymmetry results with recent cross-section measurements from Mainz to calculate the profile functions, Σˇ\check{\mathrmΣ} (= σ0Σσ_{0}\mathrmΣ), and perform a moment analysis. Comparison with calculations from the Bonn-Gatchina model shows that the precision of the data is good enough to further constrain the higher partial waves, and there is an indication of interference between the very small FF-waves and the N(1520)3/2−N(1520) 3/2^{-} and N(1535)1/2−N(1535) 1/2^{-} resonances.

Photoproduction ofeta-pi pairs off nucleons and deuterons

Quasi-free photoproduction of πηπη-pairs has been investigated from threshold up to incident photon energies of 1.4 GeV, respectively up to photon-nucleon invariant masses up to 1.9 GeV. Total cross sections, angular distributions, invariant-mass distributions of the πηπη and meson-nucleon pairs, and beam-helicity asymmetries have been measured for the reactions γp→pπ0ηγp\rightarrow pπ^0η, γn→nπ0ηγn\rightarrow nπ^0η, γp→nπ+ηγp\rightarrow nπ^+η, and γn→pπ−ηγn\rightarrow pπ^-η from nucleons bound inside the deuteron. For the γpγp initial state data for free protons have also been analyzed. Finally, the total cross sections for quasi-free production of π0ηπ^0η pairs from nucleons bound in 3^3He nuclei have been investigated in view of final state interaction (FSI) effects. The experiments were performed at the tagged photon beam facility of the Mainz MAMI accelerator using an almost 4π4π covering electromagnetic calorimeter composed of the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors. The shapes of all differential cross section data and the asymmetries are very similar for protons and neutrons and agree with the conjecture that the reactions are dominated by the sequential Δ⋆3/2−→ηΔ(1232)→πηNΔ^{\star}3/2^-\rightarrowηΔ(1232)\rightarrowπηN decay chain, mainly with Δ(1700)3/2−Δ(1700)3/2^- and Δ(1940)3/2−Δ(1940)3/2^-. The ratios of the magnitude of the total cross sections also agree with this assumption. However, the absolute magnitudes of the cross sections are reduced by FSI effects with respect to free proton data.

Measurement of double polarisation asymmetries in ωω-photoproduction

The first measurements of the beam-target-helicity-asymmetries EE and GG in the photoproduction of ωω-mesons off protons at the CBELSA/TAPS experiment are reported. EE (GG) was measured using circularly (linearly) polarised photons and a longitudinally polarised target. EE was measured over the photon energy range from close to threshold (Eγ=1108E_γ= 1108~MeV) to Eγ=2300E_γ= 2300~MeV and GG at a single energy interval of 1108<Eγ<13001108 < E_γ<1300~MeV. Both measurements cover the full solid angle. The observables EE and GG are highly sensitive to the contribution of baryon resonances, with EE acting as a helicity filter in the ss-channel. The new results indicate significant ss-channel resonance contributions together with contributions from tt-channel exchange processes. A partial wave analysis reveals strong contributions from the partial waves with spin-parity JP=3/2+,5/2+J^P=3/2^+, 5/2^+, and 3/2−3/2^-.

Photoproduction of π0π^0-pairs off protons and off neutrons

Total cross sections, angular distributions, and invariant-mass distributions have been measured for the photoproduction of π0π0π^0π^0 pairs off free protons and off nucleons bound in the deuteron. The experiments were performed at the MAMI accelerator facility in Mainz using the Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer and the Crystal Ball/TAPS detector. The accelerator delivered electron beams of 1508 and 1557~MeV, which produced bremsstrahlung in thin radiator foils. The tagged photon beam covered energies up to 1400~MeV. The data from the free proton target are in good agreement with previous measurements and were only used to test the analysis procedures. The results for differential cross sections (angular distributions and invariant-mass distributions) for free and quasi-free protons are almost identical in shape, but differ in absolute magnitude up to 15\%. Thus, moderate final-state interaction effects are present. The data for quasi-free neutrons are similar to the proton data in the second resonance region (final state invariant masses up to ≈\approx1550~MeV), where both reactions are dominated by the N(1520)3/2−→Δ(1232)3/2+πN(1520)3/2^-\rightarrow Δ(1232)3/2^+π decay. At higher energies, angular and invariant-mass distributions are different. A simple analysis of the shapes of the invariant-mass distributions in the third resonance region is consistent with strong contributions of an N⋆→NσN^{\star}\rightarrow Nσ decay for the proton, while the reaction is dominated by a sequential decay via a ΔπΔπ intermediate state for the neutron. The data are compared to predictions from the Two-Pion-MAID model and the Bonn-Gatchina coupled channel analysis.

Photoproduction of the ωω meson off the proton near threshold

An experimental study of ωω photoproduction on the proton was conducted by using the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers together with the photon tagging facility at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The γp→ωpγp\toωp differential cross sections are measured from threshold to the incident-photon energy Eγ=1.40E_γ=1.40 GeV (W=1.87W=1.87 GeV for the center-of-mass energy) with 15-MeV binning in EγE_γ and full production-angle coverage. The quality of the present data near threshold gives access to a variety of interesting physics aspects. As an example, an estimation of the ωNωN scattering length αωpα_{ωp} is provided.

The isospin structure of photoproduction of pi-eta pairs from the nucleon in the threshold region

Photoproduction of πηπη-pairs from nucleons has been investigated from threshold up to incident photon energies of ≈\approx~1.4~GeV. The quasi-free reactions γp→pπ0ηγp\rightarrow pπ^0η, γn→nπ0ηγn\rightarrow nπ^0η, γp→nπ+ηγp\rightarrow nπ^+η, and γn→pπ−ηγn\rightarrow pπ^-η were for the first time measured from nucleons bound in the deuteron. The corresponding reactions from a free-proton target were also studied to investigate final-state interaction effects (for neutral pions the free-proton results could be compared to previous measurements; the γp→nπ+ηγp\rightarrow nπ^+η reaction was measured for the first time). For the π0ηπ^0η final state coherent production via the γd→dπ0ηγd\rightarrow dπ^0η reaction was also investigated. The experiments were performed at the tagged photon beam of the Mainz MAMI accelerator using an almost 4π4π coverage electromagnetic calorimeter composed of the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors. The total cross sections for the four different final states obey the relation σ(pπ0η)σ(pπ^0η) ≈\approx σ(nπ0η)σ(nπ^0η) ≈\approx 2σ(pπ−η)2σ(pπ^-η) ≈\approx 2σ(nπ+η)2σ(nπ^+η) as expected for a dominant contribution from a Δ⋆→ηΔ(1232)→πηNΔ^{\star}\rightarrowηΔ(1232)\rightarrowπηN reaction chain, which is also supported by the shapes of the invariant-mass distributions of nucleon-meson and ππ-ηη pairs. The experimental results are compared to the predictions from an isobar reaction model.

A new determination of the eta transition form factor in the Dalitz decay eta -> e^+ e^- gamma with the Crystal Ball/TAPS detectors at the Mainz Microtron

The Dalitz decay eta -> e^+ e^- gamma has been measured in the gamma p -> eta p reaction with the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers, together with the photon tagging facility at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The experimental statistic used in this work is one order of magnitude greater than in any previous measurement of eta -> e^+ e^- gamma. The value obtained for the slope parameter 1/Lambda^2 of the eta transition form factor, 1/Lambda^2 = (1.95 +/- 0.15_stat +/- 0.10_syst) [1/GeV^2], is in good agreement with recent measurements conducted in eta -> e^+ e^- gamma and eta -> mu^+ mu^- gamma decays, as well as with recent form-factor calculations. The uncertainty obtained in the value of 1/Lambda^2 is lower compared to results from previous measurements of the eta -> e^+ e^- gamma decay.

A new measurement of the rare decay eta -> pi^0 gamma gamma with the Crystal Ball/TAPS detectors at the Mainz Microtron

A new measurement of the rare, doubly radiative decay eta->pi^0 gamma gamma was conducted with the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers together with the photon tagging facility at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. New data on the dependence of the partial decay width, Gamma(eta->pi^0 gamma gamma), on the two-photon invariant mass squared, m^2(gamma gamma), as well as a new, more precise value for the decay width, Gamma(eta->pi^0 gamma gamma) = (0.33+/-0.03_tot) eV, are based on analysis of 1.2 x 10^3 eta->pi^0 gamma gamma decays from a total of 6 x 10^7 eta mesons produced in the gamma p -> eta p reaction. The present results for dGamma(eta->pi^0 gamma gamma)/dm^2(gamma gamma) are in good agreement with previous measurements and recent theoretical calculations for this dependence.

Experimental constraints on the ωω-nucleus real potential

In a search for ωω mesic states, the production of ωω-mesons in coincidence with forward going protons has been studied in photon induced reactions on 12^{12}C for incident photon energies of 1250 - 3100 MeV. The π0γπ^0 γ pairs from decays of bound or quasi-free ωω-mesons have been measured with the CBELSA/TAPS detector system in coincidence with protons registered in the MiniTAPS forward array. Structures in the total energy distribution of the π0γπ^0 γ pairs, which would indicate the population and decay of bound ω 11ω~^{11}B states, are not observed. The π0γπ^0 γ cross section of 0.3 nb/MeV/sr observed in the bound state energy regime between -100 and 0 MeV may be accounted for by yield leaking into the bound state regime because of the large in-medium width of the ωω-meson. A comparison of the measured total energy distribution with calculations suggests the real part V0V_0 of the ω 11ω~^{11}B potential to be small and only weakly attractive with V0(ρ=ρ0)=−15±V_0(ρ=ρ_0) = -15\pm 35(stat) ±\pm20(syst) MeV in contrast to some theoretical predictions of attractive potentials with a depth of 100 - 150 MeV.

Measurement of the beam-helicity asymmetry I⊙I^{\odot} in the photoproduction of π0π±π^0π^{\pm}-pairs off protons and off neutrons

Beam-helicity asymmetries have been measured at the MAMI accelerator in Mainz for the photoproduction of mixed-charge pion pairs in the reactions γp→nπ0π+\boldsymbolγp\rightarrow nπ^0π^+ off free protons and γd→(p)pπ0π−\boldsymbolγd\rightarrow (p)pπ^0π^- and γd→(n)nπ0π+\boldsymbolγd\rightarrow (n)nπ^0π^+ off quasi-free nucleons bound in the deuteron for incident photon energies up to 1.4 GeV. Circularly polarized photons were produced from bremsstrahlung of longitudinally polarized electrons and tagged with the Glasgow-Mainz magnetic spectrometer. The charged pions, recoil protons, recoil neutrons, and decay photons from π0π^0 mesons were detected in the 4ππ electromagnetic calorimeter composed of the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors. Using a complete kinematic reconstruction of the final state, excellent agreement was found between the results for free and quasi-free protons, suggesting that the quasi-free neutron results are also a close approximation of the free-neutron asymmetries. A comparison of the results to the predictions of the Two-Pion-MAID reaction model shows that the reaction mechanisms are still not well understood, in particular at low incident photon energies in the second nucleon-resonance region.

Measurement of the g p -> K^0 Sigma^+ reaction with the Crystal Ball/TAPS detectors at the Mainz Microtron

The g p -> K^0 Sigma^+ reaction has been measured from threshold to Eg=1.45 GeV (W_cm=1.9 GeV) using the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers together with the photon tagging facility at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. In the present experiment, this reaction was searched for in the 3pi^0 p final state, by assuming K^0_S -> pi^0 pi^0 and Sigma^+ -> pi^0 p. The experimental results include total and differential cross sections as well as the polarization of the recoil hyperon. The new data significantly improve empirical knowledge about the g p -> K^0 Sigma^+ reaction in the measured energy range. The results are compared to previous measurements and model predictions. It is demonstrated that adding the present g p -> K^0 Sigma^+ results to existing data allowed a better description of this reaction with various models.

Photoproduction of pi0-mesons off neutrons in the nucleon resonance region

Precise angular distributions have been measured for the first time for the photoproduction of π0π^{0}-mesons off neutrons bound in the deuteron. The effects from nuclear Fermi motion have been eliminated by a complete kinematic reconstruction of the final state. The influence of final-state-interaction effects has been estimated by a comparison of the reaction cross section for quasi-free protons bound in the deuteron to the results for free protons and then applied as a correction to the quasi-free neutron data. The experiment was performed at the tagged photon facility of the Mainz Microtron MAMI with the Crystal Ball and TAPS detector setup for incident photon energies between 0.450.45~GeV and 1.41.4~GeV. The results are compared to the predictions from reaction models and partial-wave analyses based on data from other isospin channels. The model predictions show large discrepancies among each other and the present data will provide much tighter constraints. This is demonstrated by the results of a new analysis in the framework of the Bonn-Gatchina coupled-channel analysis which included the present data.

Quasifree photoproduction of ηη mesons off protons and neutrons

Differential and total cross sections for the quasifree reactions γp→ηpγp\rightarrowηp and γn→ηnγn\rightarrowηn have been determined at the MAMI-C electron accelerator using a liquid deuterium target. Photons were produced via bremsstrahlung from the 1.5 GeV incident electron beam and energy-tagged with the Glasgow photon tagger. Decay photons of the neutral decay modes η→2γη\rightarrow 2γ and η→3π0→6γη\rightarrow 3π^0 \rightarrow 6γ and coincident recoil nucleons were detected in a combined setup of the Crystal Ball and the TAPS calorimeters. The ηη-production cross sections were measured in coincidence with recoil protons, recoil neutrons, and in an inclusive mode without a condition on recoil nucleons, which allowed a check of the internal consistency of the data. The effects from nuclear Fermi motion were removed by a kinematic reconstruction of the final-state invariant mass and possible nuclear effects on the quasifree cross section were investigated by a comparison of free and quasifree proton data. The results, which represent a significant improvement in statistical quality compared to previous measurements, agree with the known neutron-to-proton cross-section ratio in the peak of the S11(1535)S_{11}(1535) resonance and confirm a peak in the neutron cross section, which is absent for the proton, at a center-of-mass energy W=(1670±5)W = (1670\pm 5) MeV with an intrinsic width of Γ≈30Γ\approx 30 MeV.

A narrow structure in the excitation function of eta-photoproduction off the neutron

The photoproduction of ηη-mesons off nucleons bound in 2^2H and 3^3He has been measured in coincidence with recoil protons and recoil neutrons for incident photon energies from threshold up to 1.4 GeV. The experiments were performed at the Mainz MAMI accelerator, using the Glasgow tagged photon facility. Decay photons from the η→2γη\rightarrow 2γ and η→3π0η\rightarrow 3π^0 decays and the recoil nucleons were detected with an almost 4π4π electromagnetic calorimeter combining the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors. The data from both targets are of excellent statistical quality and show a narrow structure in the excitation function of γn→nηγn\rightarrow nη. The results from the two measurements are consistent taking into account the expected effects from nuclear Fermi motion. The best estimates for position and intrinsic width of the structure are WW = (1670±\pm5) MeV and ΓΓ =(30±\pm15) MeV. For the first time precise results for the angular dependence of this structure have been extracted.

Accurate Test of Chiral Dynamics in the \boldmathγ⃗p→π0p\vecγ p \rightarrow π^0p Reaction

A precision measurement of the differential cross sections dσ/dΩdσ/dΩ and the linearly polarized photon asymmetry $Σ\equiv (dσ_\perp - dσ_\parallel) \slash (dσ_\perp + dσ_\parallel)$ for the γ⃗p→π0p\vecγ p \rightarrow π^0p reaction in the near-threshold region has been performed with a tagged photon beam and almost 4π4π detector at the Mainz Microtron. The Glasgow-Mainz photon tagging facility along with the Crystal Ball/TAPS multi-photon detector system and a cryogenic liquid hydrogen target were used. These data allowed for a precise determination of the energy dependence of the real parts of the SS- and all three PP-wave amplitudes for the first time and provide the most stringent test to date of the predictions of Chiral Perturbation Theory and its energy region of agreement with experiment.

Coherent photoproduction of pi^0- and eta-mesons off 7Li

Coherent photoproduction of π0π^0-mesons from threshold (Eth≈E_{th} \approx 136 MeV) throughout the ΔΔ-resonance region and of ηη-mesons close to the production threshold (Eth≈E_{th} \approx 570 MeV for ηη) has been measured for 7^7Li nuclei. The experiment was performed using the tagged-photon beam of the Mainz MAMI accelerator with the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors combined to give an almost 4ππ solid-angle electromagnetic calorimeter. The reactions were identified by a combined invariant-mass and missing-energy analysis. A comparison of the pion data to plane-wave impulse modelling tests the nuclear mass form factor. So far coherent ηη-production had been only identified for the lightest nuclear systems (2^2H and 3^3He). For 3^3He a large enhancement of the cross section above plane-wave approximations had been reported, indicating the formation of a quasi-bound state. The present Li-data for ηη-production agree with a plane-wave approximation. Contrary to 3^3He, neither a threshold enhancement of the total cross section nor a deviation of the angular distributions from the expected form-factor dependence were observed.

Determination of the η'-nucleus optical potential

The excitation function and momentum distribution of η′η^\prime mesons have been measured in photon induced reactions on 12^{12}{}C in the energy range of 1250-2600 MeV. The experiment was performed with tagged photon beams from the ELSA electron accelerator using the Crystal Barrel and TAPS detectors. The data are compared to model calculations to extract information on the sign and magnitude of the real part of the η′η^\prime-nucleus potential. Within the model, the comparison indicates an attractive potential of -(37±10(stat)±10(syst)37 \pm 10(stat)\pm10(syst)) MeV depth at normal nuclear matter density. Since the modulus of this depth is larger than the modulus of the imaginary part of the η′η^\prime-nucleus potential of -(10±2.510\pm2.5) MeV, determined by transparency ratio measurements, a search for resolved η′η^\prime-bound states appears promising.

Measurement of the beam-helicity asymmetry I⊙I^{\odot} in the photoproduction of π0π^0-pairs off the proton and off the neutron

Beam-helicity asymmetries have been measured at the MAMI accelerator in Mainz for the photoproduction of neutral pion pairs in the reactions γ⃗p→pπ0π0\vecγp\rightarrow pπ^0π^0 and γ⃗d→(n)pπ0π0\vecγd\rightarrow (n)pπ^0π^0, γ⃗d→(p)nπ0π0\vecγd\rightarrow (p)nπ^0π^0 off free protons and off quasi-free nucleons bound in the deuteron for incident photon energies up to 1.4 GeV. Circularly polarized photons were produced from bremsstrahlung of longitudinally polarized electrons and tagged with the Glasgow magnetic spectrometer. Decay photons from the π0π^0 mesons, recoil protons, and recoil neutrons were detected in the 4ππ covering electromagnetic calorimeter composed of the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors. After kinematic reconstruction of the final state, excellent agreement was found between the results for free and quasi-free protons. This demonstrates that the free-nucleon behavior of such observables can be extracted from measurements with quasi-free nucleons, which is the only possibility for the neutron. Contrary to expectations, the measured asymmetries are very similar for reactions off protons and neutrons. The results are compared to the predictions from the Two-Pion-MAID reaction model and (for the proton) also to the Bonn-Gatchina coupled channel analysis.

Quasi-free photoproduction of eta-mesons off 3He nuclei

Quasi-free photoproduction of ηη-mesons has been measured off nucleons bound in 3^3He nuclei for incident photon energies from the threshold region up to 1.4 GeV. The experiment was performed at the tagged photon facility of the Mainz MAMI accelerator with an almost 4π4π covering electromagnetic calorimeter, combining the TAPS and Crystal Ball detectors. The ηη-mesons were detected in coincidence with the recoil nucleons. This allowed a comparison of the production cross section off quasi-free protons and quasi-free neutrons and a full kinematic reconstruction of the final state, eliminating effects from nuclear Fermi motion. In the S11S_{11}(1535) resonance peak, the data agree with the neutron/proton cross section ratio extracted from measurements with deuteron targets. More importantly, the prominent structure observed in photoproduction off quasi-free neutrons bound in the deuteron is also clearly observed. Its parameters (width, strength) are consistent with the expectations from the deuteron results. On an absolute scale the cross sections for both quasi-free protons and neutrons are suppressed with respect to the deuteron target pointing to significant nuclear final state interaction effects.

Coherent photoproduction of eta-mesons off 3He - search for eta-mesic nuclei

Coherent photoproduction of ηη-mesons off 3^3He, i.e. the reaction γ3He→η3Heγ^3{He}\rightarrow η^3{He}, has been investigated in the near-threshold region. The experiment was performed at the Glasgow tagged photon facility of the Mainz MAMI accelerator with the combined Crystal Ball - TAPS detector. Angular distributions and the total cross section were measured using the η→γγη\rightarrow γγ and η→3π0→6γη\rightarrow 3π^0\rightarrow 6γ decay channels. The observed extremely sharp rise of the cross section at threshold and the behavior of the angular distributions are evidence for a strong η3Heη{^3{He}} final state interaction, pointing to the existence of a resonant state. The search for further evidence of this state in the excitation function of π0π^0-proton back-to-back emission in the γ3He→π0pXγ^3{He}\rightarrow π^0 pX reaction revealed a very complicated structure of the background and could not support previous conclusions.

Photoproduction of pi0pi0 and pi0pi+-pairs off the proton from threshold to the second resonance region

Precise total cross-sections and invariant-mass distributions have been measured for photoproduction of pion pairs off the proton producing pπ0π0pπ^0π^0 and nπ+π0nπ^+π^0 final states from the threshold region up to 800 MeV incident photon energy. Additionally, beam helicity asymmetries have been measured in the second resonance region (550 MeV - 820 MeV). The experiment was performed at the tagged photon beam of the Mainz MAMI accelerator with the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors combined to give an almost 4ππ solid-angle electromagnetic calorimeter. The results are much more precise than any previous measurements and confirm the chiral perturbation theory predictions for the threshold behavior of these reactions. In the second resonance region, the invariant-mass distributions of meson-meson and meson-nucleon pairs are in reasonable agreement with model predictions, but none of the models reproduce the asymmetries for the mixed-charge channel.

Study of the gamma p --> pi0 pi0 p reaction with the Crystal Ball/TAPS at the Mainz

The gamma p --> pi0 pi0 p reaction has been measured from threshold to 1.4 GeV using the Crystal Ball and TAPS photon spectrometers together with the photon tagging facility at the Mainz Microtron. The experimental results include total and differential cross sections as well as specific angular distributions, which were used to extract partial-wave amplitudes. In particular, the energy region below the D13(1520) resonance was studied.

Technical Design Report for the: PANDA Micro Vertex Detector

This document illustrates the technical layout and the expected performance of the Micro Vertex Detector (MVD) of the PANDA experiment. The MVD will detect charged particles as close as possible to the interaction zone. Design criteria and the optimisation process as well as the technical solutions chosen are discussed and the results of this process are subjected to extensive Monte Carlo physics studies. The route towards realisation of the detector is outlined.

Technical Design Report for the: PANDA Straw Tube Tracker

This document describes the technical layout and the expected performance of the Straw Tube Tracker (STT), the main tracking detector of the PANDA target spectrometer. The STT encloses a Micro-Vertex-Detector (MVD) for the inner tracking and is followed in beam direction by a set of GEM-stations. The tasks of the STT are the measurement of the particle momentum from the reconstructed trajectory and the measurement of the specific energy-loss for a particle identification. Dedicated simulations with full analysis studies of certain proton-antiproton reactions, identified as being benchmark tests for the whole PANDA scientific program, have been performed to test the STT layout and performance. The results are presented, and the time lines to construct the STT are described.

Well-established nucleon resonances revisited by double-polarization measurements

The first measurement is reported of the double-polarization observable G in photoproduction of neutral pions off protons, covering the photon energy range from 620 to 1120 MeV and the full solid angle. G describes the correlation between the photon polarization plane and the scattering plane for protons polarized along the direction of the incoming photon. The observable is highly sensitive to contributions from baryon resonances. The new results are compared to the predictions from SAID, MAID, and BnGa partial wave analyses. In spite of the long-lasting efforts to understand γp -> pπ 0 as the simplest photoproduction reaction, surprisingly large differences between the new data and the latest predictions are observed which are traced to different contributions of the N (1535) with spin-parity J^P = 1/2^- and N (1520) with J^P = 3/2^- . In the third resonance region, where N (1680) with J^P = 5/2^+ production dominates, the new data are reasonably close to the predictions.

First measurement of the circular beam asymmetry in the gamma p --> pi0 eta p reaction

The circular photon asymmetry for pi0 eta photoproduction on the proton was measured for the first time at the tagged photon facility of the MAMI C accelerator using the Crystal Ball/TAPS photon spectrometer. The experimental results are interpreted within a phenomenological isobar model that confirms the dominant role of the Delta(1700)D33 resonance. The measured asymmetry allows us to identify small contributions from positive-parity resonances via interference terms with the dominant D33 amplitude.

Radiative pi0 photoproduction on protons in the Delta+(1232) region

The reaction gamma p -> p pi0 gamma' has been measured with the Crystal Ball / TAPS detectors using the energy-tagged photon beam at the electron accelerator facility MAMI-B. Energy and angular differential cross sections for the emitted photon gamma' and angular differential cross sections for the pi0 have been determined with high statistics in the energy range of the Delta+(1232) resonance. Cross sections and the ratio of the cross section to the non-radiative process gamma p -> p pi0 are compared to theoretical reaction models, having the anomalous magnetic moment kappa_Delta+ as free parameter. As the shape of the experimental distributions is not reproduced in detail by the model calculations, currently no extraction of kappa_Delta+ is feasible.

Study of the gp-->etap reaction with the Crystal Ball detector at the Mainz Microtron(MAMI-C)

The gp-->etap reaction has been measured with the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers in the energy range from the production threshold of 707 MeV to 1.4 GeV (1.49 =< W >= 1.87 GeV). Bremsstrahlung photons produced by the 1.5-GeV electron beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI-C and momentum analyzed by the Glasgow Tagging Spectrometer were used for the eta-meson production. Our accumulation of 3.8 x 10^6 gp-->etap-->3pi0p-->6gp events allows a detailed study of the reaction dynamics. The gp-->etap differential cross sections were determined for 120 energy bins and the full range of the production angles. Our data show a dip near W = 1680 MeV in the total cross section caused by a substantial dip in eta production at forward angles. The data are compared to predictions of previous SAID and MAID partial-wave analyses and to thelatest SAID and MAID fits that have included our data.

Measurement of the Slope Parameter αα for the η→3π0η\to 3π^0 decay with the Crystal Ball detector at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI-C)

The dynamics of the η→3π0η\to 3π^0 decay have been studied with the Crystal Ball multiphoton spectrometer and the TAPS calorimeter. Bremsstrahlung photons produced by the 1.5-GeV electron beam of the Mainz microtron MAMI-C and tagged by the Glasgow photon spectrometer were used for ηη-meson production. The analysis of 3×1063 \times 10^6 γp→ηp→3π0p→6γpγp \to ηp \to 3π^0 p \to 6γp events yields the value α=−0.032±0.003α=-0.032\pm0.003 for the η→3π0η\to 3π^0 slope parameter, which agrees with the majority of recent experimental results and has the smallest uncertainty. The π0π0π^0π^0 invariant-mass spectrum was investigated for the occurrence of a cusplike structure in the vicinity of the π+π−π^+π^- threshold. The observed effect is small and does not affect our measured value for the slope parameter.

Photoproduction of pi^0 eta on protons and the Delta(1700)D_{33} resonance

Total and differential cross sections for the reaction gamma p -> pi^o eta p have been measured with the Crystal Ball/TAPS detector using the tagged photon facility at the MAMI C accelerator in Mainz. In the energy range E_gamma=0.95-1.4 GeV the reaction is dominated by the excitation and sequential decay of the Delta(1700)D33 resonance. Angular distributions measured with high statistics allow us to determine the ratio of hadronic decay widths Γ_{ηΔ}/Γ_{πS11} and the ratio of the helicity amplitudes A_{3/2}/A_{1/2} for this resonance.
