Proton Form Factor Ratio, μpGEp/GMpμ_p G_E^p/G_M^p from Double Spin Asymmetry

The ratio of the electric and magnetic form factor of the proton, μpGEp/GMpμ_p G_E^p/G_M^p, has been measured for elastic electron-proton scattering with polarized beam and target up to four-momentum transfer squared, Q2=5.66Q^2=5.66 (GeV/c)2^2 using the double spin asymmetry for target spin orientation aligned nearly perpendicular to the beam momentum direction. This measurement of μpGEp/GMpμ_p G_E^p/G_M^p agrees with the Q2Q^2 dependence of previous recoil polarization data and reconfirms the discrepancy at high Q2Q^2 between the Rosenbluth and the polarization-transfer method with a different measurement technique and systematic uncertainties uncorrelated to those of the recoil-polarization measurements. The form factor ratio at Q2Q^2=2.06 (GeV/c)2^2 has been measured as μpGEp/GMp=0.720±0.176stat±0.039sysμ_p G_E^p/G_M^p = 0.720 \pm 0.176_{stat} \pm 0.039_{sys}, which is in agreement with an earlier measurement with the polarized target technique at similar kinematics. The form factor ratio at Q2Q^2=5.66 (GeV/c)2^2 has been determined as μpGEp/GMp=0.244±0.353stat±0.013sysμ_p G_E^p/G_M^p=0.244\pm0.353_{stat}\pm0.013_{sys}, which represents the highest Q2Q^2 reach with the double spin asymmetry with polarized target to date.

Technical Supplement to "Polarization Transfer Observables in Elastic Electron-Proton Scattering at Q2^2 = 2.5, 5.2, 6.8, and 8.5 GeV2^2"

The GEp-III and GEp-2γγ experiments, carried out in Jefferson Lab's Hall C from 2007-2008, consisted of measurements of polarization transfer in elastic electron-proton scattering at momentum transfers of Q2=2.5,5.2,6.8,Q^2 = 2.5, 5.2, 6.8, and 8.548.54 GeV2^2. These measurements were carried out to improve knowledge of the proton electromagnetic form factor ratio R=μpGEp/GMpR = μ_p G_E^p/G_M^p at large values of Q2Q^2 and to search for effects beyond the Born approximation in polarization transfer observables at Q2=2.5Q^2 = 2.5 GeV2^2. The final results of both experiments were reported in a recent archival publication. A full reanalysis of the data from both experiments was carried out in order to reduce the systematic and, for the GEp-2γγ experiment, statistical uncertainties. This technical note provides additional details of the final analysis omitted from the main publication, including the final evaluation of the systematic uncertainties.

High Resolution Spectroscopic Study of Λ10^{10}_ΛBe

Spectroscopy of a Λ10^{10}_ΛBe hypernucleus was carried out at JLab Hall C using the (e,e′K+)(e,e^{\prime}K^{+}) reaction. A new magnetic spectrometer system (SPL+HES+HKS), specifically designed for high resolution hypernuclear spectroscopy, was used to obtain an energy spectrum with a resolution of 0.78 MeV (FWHM). The well-calibrated spectrometer system of the present experiment using the p(e,e′K+)Λ,Σ0p(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})Λ,Σ^{0} reactions allowed us to determine the energy levels, and the binding energy of the ground state peak (mixture of 1−^{-} and 2−^{-} states) was obtained to be BΛ_Λ=8.55±\pm0.07(stat.)±\pm0.11(sys.) MeV. The result indicates that the ground state energy is shallower than that of an emulsion study by about 0.5 MeV which provides valuable experimental information on charge symmetry breaking effect in the ΛNΛN interaction.

Spectroscopy of the neutron-rich hypernucleus Λ7^{7}_ΛHe from electron scattering

The missing mass spectroscopy of the Λ7^{7}_ΛHe hypernucleus was performed, using the 7^{7}Li(e,e′K+)Λ7(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})^{7}_ΛHe reaction at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Hall C. The ΛΛ binding energy of the ground state (1/2+^{+}) was determined with a smaller error than that of the previous measurement, being BΛB_Λ = 5.55 ±\pm 0.10(stat.) ±\pm 0.11(sys.) MeV. The experiment also provided new insight into charge symmetry breaking in p-shell hypernuclear systems. Finally, a peak at BΛB_Λ = 3.65 ±\pm 0.20(stat.) ±\pm 0.11(sys.) MeV was observed and assigned as a mixture of 3/2+^{+} and 5/2+^{+} states, confirming the "gluelike" behavior of ΛΛ, which makes an unstable state in 6^{6}He stable against neutron emission.

Polarization Transfer in Wide-Angle Compton Scattering and Single-Pion Photoproduction from the Proton

Wide-angle exclusive Compton scattering and single-pion photoproduction from the proton have been investigated via measurement of the polarization transfer from a circularly polarized photon beam to the recoil proton. The wide-angle Compton scattering polarization transfer was analyzed at an incident photon energy of 3.7~GeV at a proton scattering angle of \cma=70∘= 70^\circ. The longitudinal transfer \KLL, measured to be 0.645±0.059±0.0480.645 \pm 0.059 \pm 0.048, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic, has the same sign as predicted for the reaction mechanism in which the photon interacts with a single quark carrying the spin of the proton. However, the observed value is ∼\sim3~times larger than predicted by the generalized-parton-distribution-based calculations, which indicates a significant unknown contribution to the scattering amplitude.

The experiments with the High Resolution Kaon Spectrometer at JLab Hall C and the new spectroscopy of Λ12B{}^{12}_Λ\text{B} hypernuclei

Since the pioneering experiment, E89-009 studying hypernuclear spectroscopy using the (e,e′K+)(e,e^{\prime}K^+) reaction was completed, two additional experiments, E01-011 and E05-115, were performed at Jefferson Lab. These later experiments used a modified experimental design, the "tilt method", to dramatically suppress the large electromagnetic background, and allowed for a substantial increase in luminosity. Additionally, a new kaon spectrometer, HKS (E01-011), a new electron spectrometer, HES, and a new splitting magnet were added to produce precision, high-resolution hypernuclear spectroscopy. These two experiments, E01-011 and E05-115, resulted in two new data sets, producing sub-MeV energy resolution in the spectra of Λ7He{}^{7}_Λ\text{He}, Λ12B{}^{12}_Λ\text{B} and Λ28Al{}^{28}_Λ\text{Al} and Λ7He{}^{7}_Λ\text{He}, Λ10Be{}^{10}_Λ\text{Be}, Λ12B{}^{12}_Λ\text{B} and Λ52V{}^{52}_Λ\text{V}. All three experiments obtained a Λ12B{}^{12}_Λ\text{B}, spectrum, which is the most characteristic pp-shell hypernucleus and is commonly used for calibration. Independent analyses of these different experiments demonstrate excellent consistency and provide the clearest level structure to date of this hypernucleus as produced by the (e,e′K+)(e,e^{\prime}K^+) reaction. This paper presents details of these experiments, and the extraction and analysis of the observed Λ12B{}^{12}_Λ\text{B} spectrum.

Direct Measurements of the Lifetime of Heavy Hypernuclei

The lifetime of a Lambda particle embedded in a nucleus (hypernucleus) decreases from that of free Lambda decay due to the opening of the Lambda N to NN weak decay channel. However, it is generally believed that the lifetime of a hypernucleus attains a constant value (saturation) for medium to heavy hypernuclear masses, yet this hypothesis has been difficult to verify. The present paper reports a direct measurement of the lifetime of medium-heavy hypernuclei produced with a photon-beam from Fe, Cu, Ag, and Bi targets. The recoiling hypernuclei were detected by a fission fragment detector using low-pressure multi-wire proportional chambers. The experiment agrees remarkably well with the only previously-measured single-species heavy-hypernucleus lifetime, that of Fe56_Lambda at KEK, and has significantly higher precision. The experiment disagrees with the measured lifetime of an unknown combination of heavy hypernuclei with 180<A<225 and, with a small statistical and systematic uncertainty, strongly favors the expected saturation of the lifetime decrease.

Measurement of the Neutron Radius of 208Pb Through Parity-Violation in Electron Scattering

We report the first measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry A_PV in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons from 208Pb. A_PV is sensitive to the radius of the neutron distribution (Rn). The result A_PV = 0.656 \pm 0.060 (stat) \pm 0.014 (syst) ppm corresponds to a difference between the radii of the neutron and proton distributions Rn - Rp = 0.33 +0.16 -0.18 fm and provides the first electroweak observation of the neutron skin which is expected in a heavy, neutron-rich nucleus.

New Measurements of the Transverse Beam Asymmetry for Elastic Electron Scattering from Selected Nuclei

We have measured the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry AnA_n in the elastic scattering of 1-3 GeV transversely polarized electrons from 1^1H and for the first time from 4^4He, 12^{12}C, and 208^{208}Pb. For 1^1H, 4^4He and 12^{12}C, the measurements are in agreement with calculations that relate AnA_n to the imaginary part of the two-photon exchange amplitude including inelastic intermediate states. Surprisingly, the 208^{208}Pb result is significantly smaller than the corresponding prediction using the same formalism. These results suggest that a systematic set of new AnA_n measurements might emerge as a new and sensitive probe of the structure of heavy nuclei.

Polarization components in π0π^{0} photoproduction at photon energies up to 5.6 GeV

We present new data for the polarization observables of the final state proton in the 1H(γ⃗,p⃗)π0^{1}H(\vecγ,\vec{p})π^{0} reaction. These data can be used to test predictions based on hadron helicity conservation (HHC) and perturbative QCD (pQCD). These data have both small statistical and systematic uncertainties, and were obtained with beam energies between 1.8 and 5.6 GeV and for π0π^{0} scattering angles larger than 75∘^{\circ} in center-of-mass (c.m.) frame. The data extend the polarization measurements data base for neutral pion photoproduction up to Eγ=5.6GeVE_γ=5.6 GeV. The results show non-zero induced polarization above the resonance region. The polarization transfer components vary rapidly with the photon energy and π0π^{0} scattering angle in c.m. frame. This indicates that HHC does not hold and that the pQCD limit is still not reached in the energy regime of this experiment.

Search for effects beyond the Born approximation in polarization transfer observables in e⃗p\vec{e}p elastic scattering

Intensive theoretical and experimental efforts over the past decade have aimed at explaining the discrepancy between data for the proton electric to magnetic form factor ratio, GE/GMG_{E}/G_{M}, obtained separately from cross section and polarization transfer measurements. One possible explanation for this difference is a two-photon-exchange (TPEX) contribution. In an effort to search for effects beyond the one-photon-exchange or Born approximation, we report measurements of polarization transfer observables in the elastic H(e⃗,e′p⃗)H(\vec{e},e'\vec{p}) reaction for three different beam energies at a fixed squared momentum transfer Q2=2.5Q^2 = 2.5 GeV2^2, spanning a wide range of the virtual photon polarization parameter, εε. From these measured polarization observables, we have obtained separately the ratio RR, which equals μpGE/GMμ_p G_{E}/G_{M} in the Born approximation, and the longitudinal polarization transfer component PℓP_\ell, with statistical and systematic uncertainties of $ΔR \approx \pm 0.01 \mbox{(stat)} \pm 0.013 \mbox{(syst)}$ and $ΔP_\ell/P^{Born}_{\ell} \approx \pm 0.006 \mbox{(stat)}\pm 0.01 \mbox{(syst)}$. The ratio RR is found to be independent of εε at the 1.5% level, while the εε dependence of PℓP_\ell shows an enhancement of (2.3±0.6)(2.3 \pm 0.6) % relative to the Born approximation at large εε.

Recoil Polarization Measurements of the Proton Electromagnetic Form Factor Ratio to Q^2 = 8.5 GeV^2

Among the most fundamental observables of nucleon structure, electromagnetic form factors are a crucial benchmark for modern calculations describing the strong interaction dynamics of the nucleon's quark constituents; indeed, recent proton data have attracted intense theoretical interest. In this letter, we report new measurements of the proton electromagnetic form factor ratio using the recoil polarization method, at momentum transfers Q2=5.2, 6.7, and 8.5 GeV2. By extending the range of Q2 for which GEp is accurately determined by more than 50%, these measurements will provide significant constraints on models of nucleon structure in the non-perturbative regime.
