Analytical Benchmark Problems for Multifidelity Optimization Methods

The paper presents a collection of analytical benchmark problems specifically selected to provide a set of stress tests for the assessment of multifidelity optimization methods. In addition, the paper discusses a comprehensive ensemble of metrics and criteria recommended for the rigorous and meaningful assessment of the performance of multifidelity strategies and algorithms.

Defect-induced magnetic structure of CuMnSb

Ab initio total energy calculations show that the antiferromagnetic (111) order is not the ground state for the ideal CuMnSb Heusler alloy in contrast to the results of neutron diffraction experiments. It is known, that Heusler alloys usually contain various defects depending on the sample preparation. We have therefore investigated magnetic phases of CuMnSb assuming the most common defects which exist in real experimental conditions. The full-potential supercell approach and a Heisenberg model approach using the coherent potential approximation are adopted. The results of the total energy supercell calculations indicate that defects that bring Mn atoms close together promote the antiferromagnetic (111) structure already for a low critical defect concentrations ($\approx$ 3%). A detailed study of exchange interactions between Mn-moments further supports the above stabilization mechanism. Finally, the stability of the antiferromagnetic (111) order is enhanced by inclusion of electron correlations in narrow Mn-bands. The present refinement structure analysis of neutron scattering experiment supports theoretical conclusions.

Preparation, structural, dielectric and magnetic properties of LaFeO3-PbTiO3 solid solutions

Solid solutions of (1-x)LaFeO3-(x)PbTiO3 (0<x<1) have been prepared by conventional solid-state reaction. These complex perovskites have been studied by means of X-ray (XRPD) and neutron powder (NPD) diffraction, complemented with dielectric, magnetic, heat capacity and Mössbauer measurements. Complete solubility in the perovskite series was demonstrated. The NPD and XRPD patterns were successfully refined as orthorhombic (x \leq 0.7) and tetragonal (x \geq 0.8). A composition-driven phase transformation occurs within the interval 0.7<x<0.8. The samples with x<0.5 showed evidence of long-range magnetic ordering with an G-type antiferromagnetic arrangement of the magnetic moments of the Fe3+ cations in the B-site with propagation vector k = (0,0,0). Based on the obtained experimental data, a combined structural and magnetic phase diagram has been constructed. The factors governing the structural, dielectric and magnetic properties of (1-x) LaFeO3 - (x)PbTiO3 solid solutions are discussed, as well as their possible multiferroicity.

CuMn-V compounds: a transition from semimetal low-temperature to semiconductor high-temperature antiferromagnets

We report on a theoretical and experimental study of CuMn-V antiferromagnets. Previous works showed low-temperature antiferomagnetism and semimetal electronic structure of the semi-Heusler CuMnSb. In this paper we present theoretical predictions of high-temperature antiferromagnetism in the stable orthorhombic phases of CuMnAs and CuMnP. The electronic structure of CuMnAs is at the transition from a semimetal to a semiconductor and we predict that CuMnP is a semiconductor. We show that the transition to a semiconductor-like band structure upon introducing the lighter group-V elements is present in both the metastable semi-Heusler and the stable orthorhombic crystal structures. On the other hand, the orthorhombic phase is crucial for the high Néel temperature. Results of X-ray diffraction, magnetization, transport, and neutron diffraction measurements we performed on chemically synthesized CuMnAs are consistent with the theory predictions.

Electron-Hole Correlation in Fractional Quantum Hall Systems

The 2D system of electron confined to the lowest Landau level is described using a representation of the density matrix depending both on electron and hole coordinates. Condensation of the electron system into a fractional quantum Hall state is associated to clustering of particle and hole coordinates. The correlation of particle and hole coordinates is studied and groundstate wave functions are derived for $ν=p/(2p \pm 1)$. These wave functions prove to be accurate for the studied cases $ν=2/3$ and $3/5$ and are identical to pair wave functions [R. Morf et al., Phys. Rev. B34, 3037 (1986)] for $ν=2/3$ and $2/5$.
