Dense Nuclear Matter with Baryon Overlap

The possibility of new short-distance physics applicable inside the cores of NS is incorporated into the equation of state generated by the quark-meson coupling model. The contribution of this new physics to the energy density is taken to be proportional to the amount of overlap between the quark cores of the baryons involved. With no change to the properties of symmetric nuclear matter at saturation density, including an incompressibility compatible with data on giant monopole resonances, one can sustain neutron stars with a maximum mass $M_{max}>2.1$ M$_\odot$, even when hyperons are included.

Do Delta Baryons Play a Role in Neutron Stars?

The presence of exotic hadrons, such as hyperons and $Δ$ isobars, in the dense nuclear matter in their cores has been shown to produce important changes in the properties of neutron stars. Within the quark-meson coupling model, we show that the many-body forces generated by the change in the internal quark structure of the baryons in the strong scalar mean fields generated in dense nuclear matter prohibit the appearance of $Δ$ isobars.

Finite Nuclei in the Quark-Meson Coupling (QMC) Model

We report the first use of the effective QMC energy density functional (EDF), derived from a quark model of hadron structure, to study a broad range of ground state properties of even-even nuclei across the periodic table in the non-relativistic Hartree-Fock+BCS framework. The novelty of the QMC model is that the nuclear medium effects are treated through modification of the internal structure of the nucleon. The density dependence is microscopically derived and the spin-orbit term arises naturally. The QMC EDF depends on a single set of four adjustable parameters having clear physical basis. When applied to diverse ground state data the QMC EDF already produces, in its present simple form, overall agreement with experiment of a quality comparable to a representative Skyrme EDF. There exist however multiple Skyrme paramater sets, frequently tailored to describe selected nuclear phenomena. The QMC EDF set of fewer parameters, as derived in this work, is not open to such variation, chosen set being applied, without adjustment, to both the properties of finite nuclei and nuclear matter.

The E00-110 experiment in Jefferson Lab's Hall A: Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering off the Proton at 6 GeV

We present final results on the photon electroproduction ($\vec{e}p\rightarrow epγ$) cross section in the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) regime and the valence quark region from Jefferson Lab experiment E00-110. Results from an analysis of a subset of these data were published before, but the analysis has been improved which is described here at length, together with details on the experimental setup. Furthermore, additional data have been analyzed resulting in photon electroproduction cross sections at new kinematic settings, for a total of 588 experimental bins. Results of the $Q^2$- and $x_B$-dependences of both the helicity-dependent and helicity-independent cross sections are discussed. The $Q^2$-dependence illustrates the dominance of the twist-2 handbag amplitude in the kinematics of the experiment, as previously noted. Thanks to the excellent accuracy of this high luminosity experiment, it becomes clear that the unpolarized cross section shows a significant deviation from the Bethe-Heitler process in our kinematics, compatible with a large contribution from the leading twist-2 DVCS$^2$ term to the photon electroproduction cross section. The necessity to include higher-twist corrections in order to fully reproduce the shape of the data is also discussed. The DVCS cross sections in this paper represent the final set of experimental results from E00-110, superseding the previous publication.

Virtual Compton Scattering and the Generalized Polarizabilities of the Proton at Q^2=0.92 and 1.76 GeV^2

Virtual Compton Scattering (VCS) on the proton has been studied at Jefferson Lab using the exclusive photon electroproduction reaction (e p --> e p gamma). This paper gives a detailed account of the analysis which has led to the determination of the structure functions P_LL-P_TT/epsilon and P_LT, and the electric and magnetic generalized polarizabilities (GPs) alpha_E(Q^2) and beta_M(Q^2) at values of the four-momentum transfer squared Q^2= 0.92 and 1.76 GeV^2. These data, together with the results of VCS experiments at lower momenta, help building a coherent picture of the electric and magnetic GPs of the proton over the full measured Q^2-range, and point to their non-trivial behavior.

Role of Hyperons in Neutron Stars

The latest observation of a Shapiro delay of the binary millisecond pulsar J1614-2230 by Demorest et al. Nature 467 1081 (2010) yielded the pulsar gravitational mass to be 1.97 +/- 0.04 solar mass, the heaviest observed pulsar to-date. This result produces a stringent constraint on Equation(s) of State (EoS) of high density neutron star matter. One of the main conclusions of Demorest et al. was that their result makes the presence of non-nucleonic components in the neutron star matter unlikely. We compare the result with our recent work and conclude that hyperons in high-density matter are fully consistent with the observation and that their presence is a necessary consequence of general physical laws.

Physical Origin of Density Dependent Force of the Skyrme Type within the Quark Meson Coupling Model

A density dependent, effective nucleon-nucleon force of the Skyrme type is derived from the quark-meson coupling model -- a self-consistent, relativistic quark level description of nuclear matter. This new formulation requires no assumption that the mean scalar field is small and hence constitutes a significant advance over earlier work. The similarity of the effective interaction to the widely used SkM$^*$ force encourages us to apply it to a wide range of nuclear problems, beginning with the binding energies and charge distributions of doubly magic nuclei. Finding acceptable results in this conventional arena, we apply the same effective interaction, within the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach, to the properties of nuclei far from stability. The resulting two neutron drip lines and shell quenching are quite satisfactory. Finally, we apply the relativistic formulation to the properties of dense nuclear matter in anticipation of future application to the properties of neutron stars.

Beam normal spin asymmetry in elastic lepton-nucleon scattering

We discuss the two-photon exchange contribution to observables which involve lepton helicity flip in elastic lepton-nucleon scattering. This contribution is accessed through the spin asymmetry for a lepton beam polarized normal to the scattering plane. We estimate this beam normal spin asymmetry at large momentum transfer using a parton model and we express the corresponding amplitude in terms of generalized parton distributions.

Quark structure and nuclear effective forces

We formulate the quark meson coupling model as a many-body effective Hamiltonian. This leads naturally to the appearance of many-body forces. We investigate the zero range limit of the model and compare its Hartree-Fock Hamiltonian to that corresponding to the Skyrme effective force. By fixing the three parameters of the model to reproduce the binding and symmetry energy of nuclear matter, we find that it allows a very satisfactory interpretation of the Skyrme force.

Towards a Connection Between Nuclear Structure and QCD

As we search for an ever deeper understanding of the structure of hadronic matter one of the most fundamental questions is whether or not one can make a connection to the underlying theory of the strong interaction, QCD. We build on recent advances in the chiral extrapolation problem linking lattice QCD at relatively large ``light quark'' masses to the physical world to estimate the scalar polarizability of the nucleon. The latter plays a key role in modern relativistic mean-field descriptions of nuclei and nuclear matter (such as QMC) and, in particular, leads to a very natural saturation mechanism. We demonstrate that the value of the scalar polarizability extracted from the lattice data is consistent with that needed for a successful description of nuclei within the framework of QMC. In a very real sense this is the first hint of a direct connection between QCD and the properties of finite nuclei.

How to reconcile the Rosenbluth and the polarization transfer method in the measurement of the proton form factors

The apparent discrepancy between the Rosenbluth and the polarization transfer method for the ratio of the electric to magnetic proton form factors can be explained by a two-photon exchange correction which does not destroy the linearity of the Rosenbluth plot. Though intrinsically small, of the order of a few percent of the cross section, this correction is kinematically enhanced in the Rosenbluth method while it is small for the polarization transfer method, at least in the range of (Q^2) where it has been used until now.

Pion production in deeply virtual Compton scattering

Using a soft pion theorem based on chiral symmetry and a $Δ(1232)$ resonance model we propose an estimate for the production cross section of low energy pions in the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) process. In particular, we express the $e p \to e γπN$ processes in terms of generalized parton distributions. We provide estimates of the contamination of the $e p \to e γp$ DVCS observables due to this associated pion production processes when the experimental data are not fully exclusive, for a set of kinematical conditions representative of present or planned experiments at JLab, HERMES and COMPASS.

Correlator mixing and mass reduction as signals of chiral symmetry restoration

Chiral symmetry restoration in a dense medium is to some extent a consequence of the nuclear pion cloud. These pions induce a mixing of the axial and vector current contributions in the axial and vector correlators. We discuss their influence on hadron masses and investigate the signal produced by the remaining contribution associated with chiral symmetry restoration. Using the quark-meson coupling model we find that the latter is associated with the reduction of hadron masses.

Deeply virtual electroproduction of photons and mesons on the nucleon

We give predictions for the leading order amplitudes for deeply virtual Compton scattering and hard meson electroproduction reactions at large Q^2 in the valence region in terms of skewed quark distributions. We give first estimates for the power corrections to these leading order amplitudes. In particular, we outline examples of experimental opportunities to access the skewed parton distributions at the current high-energy lepton facilities : JLab, HERMES and COMPASS.

Deeply virtual electroproduction of photons and mesons on the nucleon : leading order amplitudes and power corrections

We estimate the leading order amplitudes for exclusive photon and meson electroproduction reactions at large Q^2 in the valence region in terms of skewed quark distributions. As experimental investigations can currently only be envisaged at moderate values of Q^2, we estimate power corrections due to the intrinsic transverse momentum of the partons in the meson wavefunction and in the nucleon. To this aim the skewed parton distribution formalism is generalized so as to include the parton intrinsic transverse momentum dependence. Furthermore, for the meson electroproduction reactions, we calculate the soft overlap type contributions and compare with the leading order amplitudes. We give first estimates for these different power corrections in kinematics which are relevant for experiments in the near future.

Virtual Compton Scattering off the nucleon

We review the recent developments of virtual Compton scattering. We focus on the kinematical regimes which look the most promising. The threshold regime gives access to the generalized polarizabilities of the proton. The hard scattering regime allows tests of perturbative QCD predictions and of the valence quark wave function. The Bjorken regime is closely related to deep inelastic scattering. It gives access to the off-forward parton distributions which generalize the ordinary parton distributions and may shed a new light on the spin problem. For each regime we discuss the experimental perspectives and the role of the Bethe-Heitler background.

The role of nucleon structure in finite nuclei

The quark-meson coupling model, based on a mean field description of non-overlapping nucleon bags bound by the self-consistent exchange of $σ$, $ω$ and $ρ$ mesons, is extended to investigate the properties of finite nuclei. Using the Born-Oppenheimer approximation to describe the interacting quark-meson system, we derive the effective equation of motion for the nucleon, as well as the self-consistent equations for the meson mean fields. The model is first applied to nuclear matter, after which we show some initial results for finite nuclei.

Virtual Compton Scattering and Generalized Polarizabilities of the Proton

Threshold photon electroproduction off the proton allows one to measure new electromagnetic observables which generalise the usual polarisabilities. There are -- a priori -- ten "generalised polarisabilities", functions of the virtual photon mass. The purpose of this paper is to lay down the appropriate formalism to extract these quantities from the photon electroproduction cross sections. We also give a first estimate of the generalised polarisabilities in the non relativistic quark model.

Virtual Compton Scattering from the Proton and the Properties of Nucleon Excited States

We calculate the $N^*$ contributions to the generalized polarizabilities of the proton in virtual Compton scattering. The following nucleon excitations are included: $N^*(1535)$, $N^*(1650)$, $N^*(1520)$, $N^*(1700)$, $Δ(1232)$, $Δ^*(1620)$ and $Δ^*(1700)$. The relationship between nucleon structure parameters, $N^*$ properties and the generalized polarizabilities of the proton is illustrated.
