M5-brane in the superspace approach

Motivated by Sen's spacetime prescription for the construction of theories with self-dual field strengths, we present a rigid superspace Lagrangian describing noninteracting tensor multiplets living on a stack of M5-branes and containing all the physical constraints on the fields, yielding the on-shell matching of the degrees of freedom. The geometric superspace approach adopted here offers a natural realization of superdiffeomorphisms and is particularly well suited for the coupling to supergravity. However, within this formulation the (anti-)self-duality property of the 3-form field strengths is lost when the superspace Lagrangian is trivially restricted to spacetime. We propose two main paths to address this issue: a first-order superspace extension of Sen's spacetime results, which, once trivially restricted to spacetime, yields all the dynamical equations including the (anti-)self-duality constraint on the 3-form field strengths, and a possible way to obtain a full superspace description of the theory, based on integral forms.

Chern-Simons Supergravity on Supergroup Manifolds

We construct N=1 d=3 AdS supergravity within the group manifold approach and compare it with Achucarro-Townsend Chern-Simons formulation of the same theory. We clarify the relation between the off-shell super gauge transformations of the Chern-Simons theory and the off-shell worldvolume supersymmetry transformations of the group manifold action. We formulate the Achucarro-Townsend model in a double supersymmetric action where the Chern-Simons theory with a supergroup gauge symmetry is constructed on a supergroup manifold. This framework is useful to establish a correspondence of degrees of freedom and auxiliary fields between the two descriptions of d=3 supergravity.

Supersymmetric Wilson Loops via Integral Forms

We study supersymmetric Wilson loops from a geometrical perspective. To this end, we propose a new formulation of these operators in terms of an integral form associated to the immersion of the loop into a supermanifold. This approach provides a unifying description of Wilson loops preserving different sets of supercharges, and clarifies the flow between them. Moreover, it allows to exploit the powerful techniques of super-differential calculus for investigating their symmetries. As remarkable examples, we discuss supersymmetry and kappa-symmetry invariance.

Pictures from Super Chern-Simons Theory

We study super-Chern-Simons theory on a generic supermanifold. After a self-contained review of integration on supermanifolds, the complexes of forms (superforms, pseudo-forms and integral forms) and the extended Cartan calculus are discussed. We then introduce Picture Changing Operators. We provide several examples of computation of PCO's acting on different type of forms. We illustrate also the action of the $η$ operator, crucial ingredient to define the interactions of super Chern-Simons theory. Then, we discuss the action for super Chern-Simons theory on any supermanifold, first in the factorized form (3-form $\times$ PCO) and then, we consider the most general expression. The latter is written in term of psuedo-forms containing an infinite number of components. We show that the free equations of motion reduce to the usual Chern-Simons equations yielding the proof of the equivalence between the formulations at different pictures of the same theory. Finally, we discuss the interaction terms. They require a suitable definition in order to take into account the picture number. That implies the construction of a 2-product which is not associative that inherits an $A_\infty$ algebra structure. That shares several similarities with a recent construction of a super string field theory action by Erler, Konopka and Sachs.

Integral representations in supermanifolds: super Hodge duals, PCOs and Liouville forms

We present few types of integral transforms and integral representations that are very useful for extending to supergeometry many familiar concepts of differential geometry. Among them we discuss the construction of the super Hodge dual, the integral representation of picture changing operators of string theories and the construction of the super-Liouville form of a symplectic supermanifold.

Multimetric Supergravities

Making use of integral forms and superfield techniques we propose supersymmetric extensions of the multimetric gravity Lagrangians in dimensions one, two, three and four. The supersymmetric interaction potential covariantly deforms the bosonic one, producing in particular suitable super-symmetric polynomials generated by the Berezinian. As an additional application of our formalism we construct supersymmetric multi-Maxwell theories in dimensions three and four.

The Integral Form of Supergravity

By using integral forms we derive the superspace action of D=3, N=1 supergravity as an integral on a supermanifold. The construction is based on target space picture changing operators, here playing the role of Poincare' duals to the lower-dimensional spacetime surfaces embedded into the supermanifold. We show how the group geometrical action based on the group manifold approach interpolates between the superspace and the component supergravity actions, thus providing another proof of their equivalence.

Hyperinstantons, the Beltrami Equation, and Triholomorphic Maps

We consider the Beltrami equation for hydrodynamics and we show that its solutions can be viewed as instanton solutions of a more general system of equations. The latter are the equations of motion for an ${\cal N}=2$ sigma model on 4-dimensional worldvolume (which is taken locally HyperKähler) with a 4-dimensional HyperKähler target space. By means of the 4D twisting procedure originally introduced by Witten for gauge theories and later generalized to 4D sigma-models by Anselmi and Fré, we show that the equations of motion describe triholomophic maps between the worldvolume and the target space. Therefore, the classification of the solutions to the 3-dimensional Beltrami equation can be performed by counting the triholomorphic maps. The counting is easily obtained by using several discrete symmetries. Finally, the similarity with holomorphic maps for ${\cal N}=2$ sigma on Calabi-Yau space prompts us to reformulate the problem of the enumeration of triholomorphic maps in terms of a topological sigma model.

The Geometry of Supermanifolds and New Supersymmetric Actions

We construct the Hodge dual for supermanifolds by means of the Grassmannian Fourier transform of superforms. In the case of supermanifolds it is known that the superforms are not sufficient to construct a consistent integration theory and that the integral forms are needed. They are distribution-like forms which can be integrated on supermanifolds as a top form can be integrated on a conventional manifold. In our construction of the Hodge dual of superforms they arise naturally. The compatibility between Hodge duality and supersymmetry is exploited and applied to several examples. We define the irreducible representations of supersymmetry in terms of integral and superforms in a new way which can be easily generalised to several models in different dimensions. The construction of supersymmetric actions based on the Hodge duality is presented and new supersymmetric actions with higher derivative terms are found. These terms are required by the invertibility of the Hodge operator.

Supergravity Actions with Integral Forms

Integral forms provide a natural and powerful tool for the construction of supergravity actions. They are generalizations of usual differential forms and are needed for a consistent theory of integration on supermanifolds. The group geometrical approach to supergravity and its variational principle are reformulated and clarified in this language. Central in our analysis is the Poincare' dual of a bosonic manifold embedded into a supermanifold. Finally, using integral forms we provide a proof of Gates' so-called "Ectoplasmic Integration Theorem", relating superfield actions to component actions.

A Note on the Field-Theoretical Description of Superfluids

Recently, a Lagrangian description of superfluids attracted some interest from the fluid/gravity-correspondence viewpoint. In this respect, the work of Dubovksy et al. has proposed a new field theoretical description of fluids, which has several interesting aspects. On another side, we have provided in arXiv:1304.2206 a supersymmetric extension of the original works. In the analysis of the Lagrangian structures a new invariant appeared which, although related to known invariants, provides, in our opinion, a better parametrisation of the fluid dynamics in order to describe the fluid/superfluid phases.

Entropy Current Formalism for Supersymmetric Theories

The recent developments in fluid/gravity correspondence give a new impulse to the study of fluid dynamics of supersymmetric theories. In that respect, the entropy current formalism requires some modifications in order to be adapted to supersymmetric theories and supergravities. We formulate a new entropy current in superspace with the properties: 1) it is conserved off-shell for non dissipative fluids, 2) it is invariant under rigid supersymmetry transformations 3) it is covariantly closed in local supersymmetric theories 4) it reduces to its bosonic expression on space-time.

Fermionic Corrections to Fluid Dynamics from BTZ Black Hole

We reconstruct the complete fermionic orbit of the non-extremal BTZ black hole by acting with finite supersymmetry transformations. The solution satisfies the exact supergravity equations of motion to all orders in the fermonic expansion and the final result is given in terms of fermionic bilinears. By fluid/gravity correspondence, we derive linearized Navier-Stokes equations and a set of new differential equations from Rarita-Schwinger equation. We compute the boundary energy-momentum tensor and we interpret the result as a perfect fluid with a modified definition of fluid velocity. Finally, we derive the modified expression for the entropy of the black hole in terms of the fermionic bilinears.

Fermionic Wigs for AdS-Schwarzschild Black Holes

We provide the metric, the gravitino fields and the gauge fields to all orders in the fermionic zero modes for D=5 and D=4, N=2 gauged supergravity solutions starting from non-extremal AdS--Schwarzschild black holes. We compute the Brown-York stress--energy tensor on the boundary of AdS_5 / AdS_4 spaces and we discuss some implications of the fermionic corrections to perfect fluid interpretation of the boundary theory. The complete non-linear solution, which we denote as fermionic wig, is achieved by acting with supersymmetry transformations upon the supergravity fields and that expansion naturally truncates at some order in the fermionic zero modes.

Fermionic Wigs for BTZ Black Holes

We compute the wig for the BTZ black hole, namely the complete non-linear solution of supergravity equations with all fermionic zero modes. We use a "gauge completion" method starting from AdS_3 Killing spinors to generate the gravitinos fields associated to the BH and we compute the back-reaction on the metric. Due to the anticommutative properties of the fermionic hairs the resummation of these effects truncates at some order. We illustrate the technique proposed in a precedent paper in a very explicit and analytical form. We also compute the mass, the angular momentum and other charges with their corrections.

Aspects of Quantum Fermionic T-duality

We study two aspects of fermionic T-duality: the duality in purely fermionic sigma models exploring the possible obstructions and the extension of the T-duality beyond classical approximation. We consider fermionic sigma models as coset models of supergroups divided by their maximally bosonic subgroup OSp(m|n)/SO(m) x Sp(n). Using the non-abelian T-duality and a non-conventional gauge fixing we derive their fermionic T-duals. In the second part of the paper, we prove the conformal invariance of these models at one and two loops using the Background Field Method and we check the Ward Identities.

BCJ and KK Relations from BRST Symmetry and Supergravity Amplitudes

We use Pure Spinor string theory to construct suitable kinematical factors which explicitly satisfy the Kleiss-Kuijf (KK) relations. Using the formula conceived by Bern et al. and employed by us for 4- and 5-point amplitudes in a previous work, we are able to compute the 6-point supergravity amplitude from the corresponding SYM building blocks given by Mafra et al.. We derive the KK and Bern-Carrasco-Johansson (BCJ) identities from the BRST invariance and we discuss the relations between Bern et al. building blocks and those of Mafra et al..

Cech and de Rham Cohomology of Integral Forms

We present a study on the integral forms and their Cech/de Rham cohomology. We analyze the problem from a general perspective of sheaf theory and we explore examples in superprojective manifolds. Integral forms are fundamental in the theory of integration in supermanifolds. One can define the integral forms introducing a new sheaf containing, among other objects, the new basic forms delta(dtheta) where the symbol delta has the usual formal properties of Dirac's delta distribution and acts on functions and forms as a Dirac measure. They satisfy in addition some new relations on the sheaf. It turns out that the enlarged sheaf of integral and "ordinary" superforms contains also forms of "negative degree" and, moreover, due to the additional relations introduced, its cohomology is, in a non trivial way, different from the usual superform cohomology.

Fluid Super-Dynamics from Black Hole Superpartners

Recently the Navier-Stokes equations have been derived from the duality with the black branes in AdS_5. The zero modes of black branes are reinterpreted as dynamical degrees of freedom of a conformal fluid on the boundary of AdS_5. Here, we derive the corrections to the Navier-Stokes equations due to fermionic zero modes of the black branes. We study only the contributions due to bilinears in the fermionic zero modes in the first order of the parameter expansion. The need of a superextension of the fluid dynamics is a consequence of the full AdS/CFT correspondence and yet to be investigated.

On Projections to the Pure Spinor Space

A family of covariant non-linear projections from the space of SO(10) Weyl spinors onto the space of pure SO(10) Weyl spinors is presented. The Jacobian matrices of these projections are related to a linear projector which was previously discussed in pure spinor string literature and which maps the antighost to its gauge invariant part. Only one representative of the family leads to a Hermitian Jacobian matrix and can itself be derived from a scalar potential. Comments on the SO(1,9) case are given as well as on the non-covariant version of the projection map. The insight is applied to the ghost action of pure spinor string theory, where the constraints on the fields can be removed using the projection, while introducing new gauge symmetries. This opens the possibility of choosing different gauges which might help to clarify the origin of the pure spinor ghosts. Also the measure of the pure spinor space is discussed from the projection point of view. The appendix contains the discussion of a toy model which served as a guideline for the pure spinor case.

On Supergravity Amplitudes from Pure Spinor Strings

We use Pure Spinor String Theory to construct suitable building blocks to arrange the structure of supergravity amplitudes with n-points and at higher loops in a very convenient way. Following Mafra et al. proposal for N=4 super Yang-Mills amplitudes, we discuss its generalization to supergravity amplitudes. In particular, we first derive the building blocks for closed string amplitudes from closed vertices showing that, because of the factorization, several results of open string theory can be used; nevertheless, also new structures emerge. We provide a first list of these new ingredients and their BRST variations. Second, we analyze 4-point amplitudes showing how the different building blocks enter and finally we discuss the factorization of 5-point amplitudes in supergravity in terms of those structures.

Supersymmetric Fluid Dynamics

Recently Navier-Stokes (NS) equations have been derived from the duality between the black branes and a conformal fluid on the boundary of AdS_5. Nevertheless, the full correspondence has to be established between solutions of supergravity in AdS_5 and supersymmetric field theories on the boundary. That prompts the construction of NS equations for a supersymmetric fluid. In the framework of rigid susy, there are several possibilities and we propose one candidate. We deduce the equations of motion in two ways: both from the divergenless condition on the energy-momentum tensor and by a suitable parametrization of the auxiliary fields. We give the complete component expansion and a very preliminary analysis of the physics of this supersymmetric fluid.

Exceptional N=6 and N=2 AdS_4 Supergravity, and Zero-Center Modules

We study the gauging of the orthosymplectic algebras OSp(6|4)xSO(2) and its "dual" OSp(2|4)x SO(6), both based on supergravities with the same exceptional coset SO*(12)/U(6), and gauge group SO(6)xSO(2). The two dual theories are obtained by two different truncations of gauged N=8 AdS_4 supergravity. We explicitly study the gauge sector of the two dual theories with the most general group allowed by supersymmetry. In the ungauged (super-Poincaré) case they exhibit the same (large) black-hole attractor solutions with dual relations between the 1/N-BPS and non-BPS configurations. The N=6 gravity multiplet has also the exceptional property to be a {\em zero-center module} of OSp(6|4), as it is the case for superconformal Yang--Mills theory in four dimensions based on SU(2,2|n) (PSU(2,2|4) for n=4) or OSp(n|4).

Flux Vacua and Supermanifolds

As been recently pointed out, physically relevant models derived from string theory require the presence of non-vanishing form fluxes besides the usual geometrical constraints. In the case of NS-NS fluxes, the Generalized Complex Geometry encodes these informations in a beautiful geometrical structure. On the other hand, the R-R fluxes call for supergeometry as the underlying mathematical framework. In this context, we analyze the possibility of constructing interesting supermanifolds recasting the geometrical data and RR fluxes. To characterize these supermanifolds we have been guided by the fact topological strings on supermanifolds require the super-Ricci flatness of the target space. This can be achieved by adding to a given bosonic manifold enough anticommuting coordinates and new constraints on the bosonic sub-manifold. We study these constraints at the linear and non-linear level for a pure geometrical setting and in the presence of p-form field strengths. We find that certain spaces admit several super-extensions and we give a parameterization in a simple case of d bosonic coordinates and two fermionic coordinates. In addition, we comment on the role of the RR field in the construction of the super-metric. We give several examples based on supergroup manifolds and coset supermanifolds.

Pure Spinor Strings in TsT Deformed Background

We consider pure spinor strings that propagate in the background generated by a sequence of TsT transformations. We use the fact that U(1) isometry variables of TsT-transformed background are related to the isometry variables of the initial background in the universal way that is independent of the details of the background. We will argue that after redefinitions of pure spinors and the fermionic variables we can construct pure spinor action with manifest U(1) isometry. This fact implies that the pure spinor string in TsT-transformed background is described by pure spinor string in the original background where world-volume modes are subject to twisted boundary conditions. We will argue that these twisted boundary conditions generally prevent to prove the quantum conformal invariance of the pure spinor string in AdS_5 x S^5 background. We determine the conditions under which this quantum conformal invariance can be proved. We also determine the Lax pair for pure spinor strings in the TsT-transformed background.

N=2 Superparticles, RR Fields and Noncommutative Structures of (super)-Spacetime

The recent developments in superstring theory prompted the study of non-commutative structures in superspace. Considering bosonic and fermionic strings in a constant antisymmetric tensor background yields a non-vanishing commutator between the bosonic coordinates of the spacetime. Likewise, the presence of constant Ramond-Ramond (RR) background leads to a non-vanishing anti-commutator for the Grassmann coordinates of the superspace. The non-vanishing commutation relation between bosonic coordinates can also be derived using a particle moving in a magnetic background, we use N=2 pure spinor superparticles and D0-branes to show how the non-commutative structures emerge in superspace. It is argued how a D0-brane in a background of RR fields reproduces the results obtained in string theory.

Non-commutative superspace from string theory

Turning on background fields in string theory sometimes has an alternative interpretation as a deformation of the target space geometry. A particularly well-known case is the NS-NS two form B, which gives rise to space-time non-commutativity. In this note we point out that this phenomenon extends to ten-dimensional superspace when employing a covariant quantization of the superstring, generalizing an observation by Ooguri and Vafa in four dimensions. In particular, we will find that RR field strengths give rise to a non-zero $\{θ,θ\}$ anti-commutator, just as in four dimensions, whereas the gravitino yields a non-zero value for $[x,θ]$.

The Quantum Superstring as a WZNW Model with N=2 Superconformal Symmetry

We present a new development in our approach to the covariant quantization of superstrings in 10 dimensions which is based on a gauged WZNW model. To incorporate worldsheet diffeomorphisms we need the quartet of ghosts $(b_{zz},c^{z}, \b_{zz}, \g^{z})$ for topological gravity. The currents of this combined system form an N=2 superconformal algebra. The model has vanishing central charge and contains two anticommuting BRST charges, $Q_{S}=Q_{W} + \oint \g^{z} b_{zz} + \oint η_{z}$ and $Q_{V} = \oint c^{z} \Big(T^{W}_{zz} + {1\over 2} T^{top}_{zz}\Big) + \g^{z} (B^{W}_{zz} + {1\over 2} B^{top}_{zz} \Big)$, where $η_{z}$ is obtained by the usual fermionization of $\b_{zz}, \g^{z}$. Physical states form the cohomology of $Q_{S}+Q_{V}$, have nonnegative grading, and are annihilated by $b_{0}$ and $β_{0}$. We no longer introduce any ghosts by hand, and the formalism is completely Lorentz covariant.

preprint2002arXiv

On the BRST Cohomology of Superstrings with/without Pure Spinors

We replace our earlier condition that physical states of the superstring have non-negative grading by the requirement that they are analytic in a new real commuting constant t which we associate with the central charge of the underlying Kac-Moody superalgebra. The analogy with the twisted N=2 SYM theory suggests that our covariant superstring is a twisted version of another formulation with an equivariant cohomology. We prove that our vertex operators correspond in one-to-one fashion to the vertex operators in Berkovits' approach based on pure spinors. Also the zero-momentum cohomology is equal in both cases. Finally, we apply the methods of equivariant cohomology to the superstring, and obtain the same BRST charge as obtained earlier by relaxing the pure spinor constraints.

Practical Algebraic Renormalization

A practical approach is presented which allows the use of a non-invariant regularization scheme for the computation of quantum corrections in perturbative quantum field theory. The theoretical control of algebraic renormalization over non-invariant counterterms is translated into a practical computational method. We provide a detailed introduction into the handling of the Slavnov-Taylor and Ward-Takahashi identities in the Standard Model both in the conventional and the background gauge. Explicit examples for their practical derivation are presented. After a brief introduction into the Quantum Action Principle the conventional algebraic method which allows for the restoration of the functional identities is discussed. The main point of our approach is the optimization of this procedure which results in an enormous reduction of the calculational effort. The counterterms which have to be computed are universal in the sense that they are independent of the regularization scheme. The method is explicitly illustrated for two processes of phenomenological interest: QCD corrections to the decay of the Higgs boson into two photons and two-loop electroweak corrections to the process $B \to X_s γ$.
