Searching for Magnetostatic Modes in Spin-Polarized Atomic Hydrogen

We consider a possibility of the magnetostatic type spin waves driven by a long-range magnetic dipole interactions, to account for the peaks in the ESR spectra observed in our previous work. The Walker equation for magnetostatic modes is solved for a cylinder of atomic hydrogen, first in a uniform magnetic field and second in a linearly decreasing magnetic field. The frequency behavior of the solved modes with length of the cylinder and density of the gas is compared to experimental data. We conclude that magnetostatic modes are unlikely to account for the observed modulations of ESR spectra.

Growth dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a dimple trap without cooling

We study the formation of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a cigar-shaped three-dimensional harmonic trap, induced by the controlled addition of an attractive "dimple" potential along the weak axis. In this manner we are able to induce condensation without cooling due to a localized increase in the phase space density. We perform a quantitative analysis of the thermodynamic transformation in both the sudden and adiabatic regimes for a range of dimple widths and depths. We find good agreement with equilibrium calculations based on self-consistent semiclassical Hartree-Fock theory describing the condensate and thermal cloud. We observe there is an optimal dimple depth that results in a maximum in the condensate fraction. We also study the non-equilibrium dynamics of condensate formation in the sudden turn-on regime, finding good agreement for the observed time dependence of the condensate fraction with calculations based on quantum kinetic theory.

Wave-packet analysis of interference patterns in output coupled atoms

We study the output coupling of atoms from a magnetic trap into a linear potential slope of gravity using a weak radio-frequency field. We present a one-dimensional wave-packet model based on a continuous loading of a continuous spectrum of generalised eigenstates to describe the scenario. Analyzing the model, we show how the interference of the classical coupling fields maps to the interference of the resulting atomic streams.
