Inverse Turán numbers

For given graphs GG and FF, the Turán number ex(G,F)ex(G,F) is defined to be the maximum number of edges in an FF-free subgraph of GG. Foucaud, Krivelevich and Perarnau and later independently Briggs and Cox introduced a dual version of this problem wherein for a given number kk, one maximizes the number of edges in a host graph GG for which ex(G,H)<kex(G,H) < k. Addressing a problem of Briggs and Cox, we determine the asymptotic value of the inverse Turán number of the paths of length 44 and 55 and provide an improved lower bound for all paths of even length. Moreover, we obtain bounds on the inverse Turán number of even cycles giving improved bounds on the leading coefficient in the case of C4C_4. Finally, we give multiple conjectures concerning the asymptotic value of the inverse Turán number of C4C_4 and PℓP_{\ell}, suggesting that in the latter problem the asymptotic behavior depends heavily on the parity of ℓ\ell.

A note on the Turán number of disjoint union of wheels

The Turán number of a graph HH, ex(n,H)\text{ex}(n,H), is the maximum number of edges in a graph on nn vertices which does not have HH as a subgraph. A wheel WnW_n is an nn-vertex graph formed by connecting a single vertex to all vertices of a cycle Cn−1C_{n-1}. Let mW2k+1mW_{2k+1} denote the mm vertex-disjoint copies of W2k+1W_{2k+1}. For sufficiently large nn, we determine the Turán number and all extremal graphs for mW2k+1mW_{2k+1}. We also provide the Turán number and all extremal graphs for Wh:=⋃i=1mWkiW^{h}:=\bigcup\limits^m_{i=1}W_{k_i} when nn is sufficiently large, where the number of even wheels is hh and h>0h>0.

Generalized Planar Turán Numbers

In a generalized Turán problem, we are given graphs HH and FF and seek to maximize the number of copies of HH in an FF-free graph of order nn. We consider generalized Turán problems where the host graph is planar. In particular we obtain the order of magnitude of the maximum number of copies of a fixed tree in a planar graph containing no even cycle of length at most 2ℓ2\ell, for all ℓ\ell, ℓ≥1\ell \geq 1. We obtain the order of magnitude of the maximum number of cycles of a given length in a planar C4C_4-free graph. An exact result is given for the maximum number of 55-cycles in a C4C_4-free planar graph. Multiple conjectures are also introduced.

Saturation problems in the Ramsey theory of graphs, posets and point sets

In 1964, Erdős, Hajnal and Moon introduced a saturation version of Turán's classical theorem in extremal graph theory. In particular, they determined the minimum number of edges in a KrK_r-free, nn-vertex graph with the property that the addition of any further edge yields a copy of KrK_r. We consider analogues of this problem in other settings. We prove a saturation version of the Erdős-Szekeres theorem about monotone subsequences and saturation versions of some Ramsey-type theorems on graphs and Dilworth-type theorems on posets. We also consider semisaturation problems, wherein we allow the family to have the forbidden configuration, but insist that any addition to the family yields a new copy of the forbidden configuration. In this setting, we prove a semisaturation version of the Erdős-Szekeres theorem on convex kk-gons, as well as multiple semisaturation theorems for sequences and posets.

Turán numbers of Berge trees

A classical conjecture of Erdős and Sós asks to determine the Turán number of a tree. We consider variants of this problem in the settings of hypergraphs and multi-hypergraphs. In particular, for all kk and rr, with r≥k(k−2)r \ge k (k-2), we show that any rr-uniform hypergraph H\mathcal{H} with more than n(k−1)r+1\frac{n(k-1)}{r+1} hyperedges contains a Berge copy of any tree with kk edges different from the kk-edge star. This bound is sharp when r+1r+1 divides nn and for such values of nn we determine the extremal hypergraphs.
