An ODE reduction method for the semi-Riemannian Yamabe problem on space forms

We consider the semi-Riemannian Yamabe type equations of the form \[ -\square u + λu = μ\vert u\vert^{p-1}u\quad\text{ on }M \] where $M$ is either the semi-Euclidean space or the pseudosphere of dimension $m\geq 3$, $\square$ is the semi-Riemannian Laplacian in $M$, $λ\geq0$, $μ\in\mathbb{R}\smallsetminus\{0\}$ and $p>1$. Using semi-Riemannian isoparametric functions on $M$, we reduce the PDE into a generalized Emden-Fowler ODE of the form \[ w''+q(r)w'+λw = μ\vert w\vert^{p-1}w\quad\text{ on } I, \] where $I\subset\mathbb{R}$ is $[0,\infty)$ or $[0,π]$, $q(r)$ blows-up at $0$ and $w$ is subject to the natural initial conditions $w'(0)=0$ in the first case and $w'(0)=w'(π)=0$ in the second. We prove the existence of blowing-up and globally defined solutions to this problem, both positive and sign-changing, inducing solutions to the semi-Riemannian Yamabe type problem with the same qualitative properties, with level and critical sets described in terms of semi-Riemannian isoparametric hypersurfaces and focal varieties. In particular, we prove the existence of sign-changing blowing-up solutions to the semi-Riemannian Yamabe problem in the pseudosphere having a prescribed number of nodal domains.

Classification of constant angle hypersurfaces in warped products via eikonal functions

Given a warped product of the real line with a Riemannian manifold of arbitrary dimension, we classify the hypersurfaces whose tangent spaces make a constant angle with the vector field tangent to the real direction. We show that this is a natural setting in which to extend previous results in this direction made by several authors. Moreover, when the constant angle hypersurface is a graph over the Riemannian manifold, we show that the function involved satisfies a generalized eikonal equation, which we solve via a geometric method. In the final part of this paper we prove that minimal constant angle hypersurfaces are cylinders over minimal submanifolds.

Hypersurfaces with a canonical principal direction

Given a vector field $X$ in a Riemannian manifold, a hypersurface is said to have a canonical principal direction relative to $X$ if the projection of $X$ onto the tangent space of the hypersurface gives a principal direction. We give different ways for building these hypersurfaces, as well as a number of useful characterizations. In particular, we relate them with transnormal functions and eikonal equations. With the further condition of having constant mean curvature (CMC) we obtain a characterization of the canonical principal direction surfaces in Euclidean space as Delaunay surfaces. We also prove that CMC constant angle hypersurfaces in a product $\mathbb{R}\times N$ are either totally geodesic or cylinders.
