Testing Swampland Conjectures with Machine Learning

We consider Type IIB compactifications on an isotropic torus $T^6$ threaded by geometric and non geometric fluxes. For this particular setup we apply supervised machine learning techniques, namely an artificial neural network coupled to a genetic algorithm, in order to obtain more than sixty thousand flux configurations yielding to a scalar potential with at least one critical point. We observe that both stable AdS vacua with large moduli masses and small vacuum energy as well as unstable dS vacua with small tachyonic mass and large energy are absent, in accordance to the Refined de Sitter Conjecture. Moreover, by considering a hierarchy among fluxes, we observe that perturbative solutions with small values for the vacuum energy and moduli masses are favored, as well as scenarios in which the lightest modulus mass is much greater than the corresponding AdS vacuum scale. Finally we apply some results on Random Matrix Theory to conclude that the most probable mass spectrum derived from this string setup is that satisfying the Refined de Sitter and AdS scale conjectures.

Fat Inflatons, Large Turns and the $η$-problem

It is commonly believed that a successful period of inflation driven by a single or several scalar fields requires a specific hierarchy of masses given by $M_{inf}\ll H \ll M_{heavy}$, where $M_{inf}$ can correspond to several or a single light field and $M_{heavy}\,\,\,$ corresponds to any heavy field that might be integrated out if it satisfies suitable conditions. This is at the heart of the so called $η$-problem in inflation, since large contributions to the masses of the inflatons might spoil the slow-roll conditions required for inflation. We show that, while this is an unavoidable conclusion in single field inflation, in multifield inflation, heavy fields as defined above, may be fully responsible for a successful period of what we call fat slow-roll inflation. Moreover we show that in this scenario, the turning rate of the inflationary trajectory, $Ω/H$, is larger than one. Thus, the $η$-problem is evaded with large turns in fat inflation. Depending on the perturbations' mass spectra, cosmological predictions will differ either slightly or largely with respect to those of the single field case. We illustrate this scenario in a concrete example in Type IIB string flux compactifications, where a probe D5-brane moving along the angular and radial directions in a warped throat drives fat D5-brane natural inflation. An instantaneous superplanckian decay constant can be defined, consistent with our low energy approximations, thanks to the strong warping of the geometry. We compute the cosmological observables, which differ from the single field case. We also discuss fat inflation in the context of recently proposed swampland de Sitter conjectures.

Mirror quintic vacua: hierarchies and inflation

We study the moduli space of type IIB string theory flux compactifications on the mirror of the CY quintic 3-fold in P4. We focus on the dynamics of the four dimensional moduli space, defined by the axio-dilaton τ and the complex structure modulus z. The z-plane has critical points, the conifold, the orbifold and the large complex structure with non trivial monodromies. We find the solutions to the Picard-Fuchs equations obeyed by the periods of the CY in the full z-plane as a series expansion in z around the critical points to arbitrary order. This allows us to discard fake vacua, which appear as a result of keeping only the leading order term in the series expansions. Due to monodromies vacua are located at a given sheet in the z-plane. A dS vacuum appears for a set of fluxes. We revisit vacua with hierarchies among the 4D and 6D physical scales close to the conifold point and compare them with those found at leading order in [1, 2]. We explore slow-roll inflationary directions of the scalar potential by looking at regions where the multi-field slow-roll parameters ε and η are smaller than one. The value of ε depends strongly on the approximation of the periods and to achieve a stable value, several orders in the expansion are needed. We do not find realisations of single field axion monodromy inflation. Instead, we find that inflationary regions appear along linear combinations of the four real field directions and for certain configurations of fluxes.

Half-flat Quantum Hair

By wrapping D3-branes over 3-cycles on a half-flat manifold we construct an effective supersymmetric black hole in the N=2 low-energy theory in four-dimensions. Specifically we find that the torsion cycles present in a half-flat compactification, corresponding to the mirror symmetric image of electric NS flux on a Calabi-Yau manifold, manifest in the half-flat black hole as quantum hair. We compute the electric and magnetic charges related to the quantum hair, and also the mass contribution to the effective black hole. We find that by wrapping a number of D3-branes equal to the order of the discrete group associated to the torsional part of the half-flat homology, the effective charge and mass terms vanishes. We compute the variation of entropy and the corresponding temperature associated with the lost of quantum hair. We also comment on the equivalence between canceling Freed-Witten anomaly and the assumption of self-duality for the 5-form field strength. Finally from a K-theoretical perspective, we compute the presence of discrete RR charge of D-branes wrapping torsional cycles in a half-flat manifold.

More stable dS vacua from S-dual non-geometric fluxes

Stable vacua obtained from isotropic tori compactification might not be fully stable provided the existence of runaway directions in the Kaehler directions of anisotropy. By implementing a genetic algorithm we report the existence of explicit flux configurations leading to stable de Sitter and Anti- de Sitter vacua, consisting on Type IIB compactifications on a 6-dimensional anisotropic torus threaded with standard and S-dual invariant non-geometric fluxes in the presence of orientifold 3-planes. In all dS vacua the masses of the complex structure moduli are heavier than the Hubble scale suggesting that the axio-dilaton and Kaeahler moduli are natural candidates for small-field inflation. In the way, we also report new solutions on isotropic and semi-isotropic tori compactifications. Finally, we observe that, since all our solutions are obtained in the absence of solitonic objects, they are good candidates to be lifted to stable solutions in extended supersymmetric theories.

Slow-Roll Inflation in Non-geometric Flux Compactification

By implementing a genetic algorithm we search for stable vacua in Type IIB non-geometric flux compactification on an isotropic torus with orientifold 3-planes. We find that the number of stable dS and AdS vacua are of the same order. Moreover we find that in all dS vacua the multi-field slow-roll inflationary conditions are fulfilled. Specifically we observe that inflation is driven by the axio-dilaton and the Kähler moduli. We also comment on the existence of one stable dS vacuum in the presence of exotic orientifolds.

Closed String Tachyon: Inflation and Cosmological Collapse

By compactifying a critical bosonic string theory on an internal non-flat space with a constant volume, we study the role played by the closed string tachyon in the cosmology of the effective four-dimensional space-time. The effective tachyon potential consists on a negative constant related to the internal curvature space and a polynomial with only quadratic and quartic terms of the tachyon field. Based on it, we present a solution for the tachyon field and the scale factor, which describes an accelerated universe which expands to a maximum value before collapsing. At early times, the closed string tachyon potential behaves as a cosmological constant driving the Universe to an expansion. The value of the cosmological constant is determined by the curvature of the internal space which also fixes the value of the vacuum energy. As time evolves, inflation is present in our models, and it finishes long before the collapsing. At late times, we show that the collapse of the Universe starts as soon as the tachyon field condensates. We also comment on the consistency of our solution at early times at which quantum aspects become important under the perspective of quantum cosmology. Finally we briefly mention the relation among the curvature of the internal space and the value of the energy vacuum in a non-constant internal volume scenario.

Near-Horizon geometry from flux compactification

We study the conditions an arbitrary flux configuration must fulfill in order to construct a 4d space-time of the type $AdS_2\times S^2$ from a type IIB supergravity flux compactification in which NS-NS fluxes are included. We present a solution consisting on a compactification in the presence of 3-form NS-NS and RR fluxes. The internal manifold is a SU(3) structure six-dimensional manifold, with null curvature and with torsion. By preserving two supersymmetries in the four-dimensional low energy theory, we find a way to obtain the $AdS_2\times S^2$ geometry as a near-horizon solution by compactification in non-Calabi-Yau manifolds.

Spherically symmetric solution in a space-time with torsion

By using the method of group analysis, we obtain a new exact evolving and spherically symmetric solution of the Einstein-Cartan equations of motion, corresponding to a space-time threaded with a three-form Kalb-Ramond field strength. The solution describes in its more generic form, a space-time which scalar curvature vanishes for large distances and for large time. In static conditions, it reduces to a classical wormhole solution and to a exact solution with a localized scalar field and a torsion kink, already reported in literature. In the process we have found evidence towards the construction of more new solutions.

Minkowski vacuum transitions in (non-geometric) flux compactifications

In this work we study the generalization of twisted homology to geometric and non-geometric backgrounds. In the process we describe the necessary conditions to wrap a network of D-branes on twisted cycles. If the cycle is localized in time, we show how by an instantonic brane mediation, some D-branes transform into fluxes on different backgrounds including non-geometric fluxes. As a consequence, we show that in the case of a IIB six-dimensional torus compactification on a simple orientifold, the flux superpotential is not invariant by this brane-flux transition, allowing the connection among different Minkowski vacuum solutions. For the case in which non-geometric fluxes are turned on, we also discuss some topological restrictions for the transition to occur. In this context, we show that there are some vacuum solutions protected to change by a brane-flux transition.

Effects of brane-flux transition on black holes in string theory

Extremal N=2 black holes in four dimensions can be described by an ensemble of D3-branes wrapped on internal supersymmetric three-cycles of Calabi-Yau threefolds on which type IIB superstring theory is compactified. We construct a similar configuration, with extra RR and NS-NS three-form fluxes being turned on. We can avoid the Freed-Witten anomaly on the D3-branes by enforcing the pullback of these extra fluxes to the D3-branes to vanish at the classical level. In the setup the D3-brane charge is not conserved since it is classified as a trivial class in twisted K-theory. Consequently, the D3-branes may disappear by encountering an instantonic D5-brane localized in time. We discuss what happens on the black hole described by such disappearing D3-branes, relying mainly on topological arguments. Especially, we argue that another RR three-form flux will be left as a lump of remnant which is localized in the uncompactified four-dimensional space-time and that it may carry the same amount of degrees of freedom to describe a black hole, in cooperation with the original NS-NS flux, after this transition of the D3-branes.

Branes and Fluxes in Orientifolds and K-theory

RR fields in string backgrounds including orientifold planes and branes on top of them are classified by K-theory. Following the idea introduced in hep-th/0103183, we also classify such fluxes by cohomology. Both of them are compared through the Atiyah-Hirzebruch Spectral Sequence. Some new correlations between branes on orientifold planes $Op^\pm$ and obstructions to the existence of some branes are found. Finally, we find a topological condition that avoid the presence of global gauge anomalies in lower dimensional systems.

Instantonic Branes, Atiyah-Hirzebruch Spectral Sequence, and SL(2,Z) duality of N=4 SYM

We study the equivalence among orientifold three-planes in the context of the Atiyah-Hirzebruch Spectral Sequence. This equivalence refers to the fact that two different cohomology classes in the same cohomology group, which classify the orientifolds, are lifted to the same trivial class in K-theory. The physical interpretation of this mathematical algorithm is given by the role of D-brane instantons. By following some recent ideas, we extend the sequence to include a classification of NS-NS fluxes. We find that such equivalences, in the low energy limit of the dynamics on the worldvolume of type IIB D3-branes on top of the orientifolds, are interpreted as the SL(2,Z) duality in four dimensional N=4 SYM theories.

Topics on Strings, Branes and Calabi-Yau Compactifications

Basics of some topics on perturbative and non-perturbative string theory are reviewed. After a mathematical survey of the Standard Model of particle physics and GUTs, the bosonic string kinematics for the free case and with interaction is described. The effective action of the bosonic string and the spectrum is also discussed. Five perturbative superstring theories and their spectra is briefly outlined. Calabi-Yau three-fold compactifications of heterotic strings and their relation to some four-dimensional physics are given. T-duality in closed and open strings are surveyed. D-brane definition is provided and some of their properties and applications to brane boxes configurations, in particular to the cube model are discussed. Finally, non-perturbative issues like S-duality, M-theory, F-theory and basics of their non-perturbative Calabi-Yau compactifications are considered.
