Chiral effective theories with a light scalar at one loop

There are indications that some theories with spontaneous symmetry breaking also feature a light scalar in their spectrum, with a mass comparable to the one of the Goldstone modes. In this paper, we perform the one-loop renormalization of a theory of Goldstone modes invariant under a chiral $SU(n)\times SU(n)$ symmetry group coupled to a generic scalar singlet. We employ the background field method, together with the heat kernel expansion, to get an expression for the effective action at one loop and single out the anomalous dimensions, which can be read off from the second Seeley-DeWitt coefficient. As a relevant application, we use our master formula to renormalize chiral-scale perturbation theory, an alternative to $SU(3)$ chiral perturbation theory where the $f_0(500)$ meson is interpreted as a dilaton. Based on our results, we briefly discuss strategies to test and discern both effective field theories using lattice simulations.

A Systematic Approach to the SILH Lagrangian

We consider the electroweak chiral Lagrangian, including a light scalar boson, in the limit of small $ξ=v^2/f^2$. Here $v$ is the electroweak scale and $f$ is the corresponding scale of the new strong dynamics. We show how the conventional SILH Lagrangian, defined as the effective theory of a strongly-interacting light Higgs (SILH) to first order in $ξ$, can be obtained as a limiting case of the complete electroweak chiral Lagrangian. The approach presented here ensures the completeness of the operator basis at the considered order, it clarifies the systematics of the effective Lagrangian, guarantees a consistent and unambiguous power counting, and it shows how the generalization of the effective field theory to higher orders in $ξ$ has to be performed. We point out that terms of order $ξ^2$, which are usually not included in the SILH Lagrangian, are parametrically larger than terms of order $ξ/16π^2$ that are retained, as long as $ξ> 1/16π^2$. Conceptual issues such as custodial symmetry and its breaking are also discussed. For illustration, the minimal composite Higgs model based on the coset $SO(5)/SO(4)$ is considered at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion. It is shown how the effective Lagrangian for this model is contained as a special case in the electroweak chiral Lagrangian based on $SU(2)_L\otimes SU(2)_R/SU(2)_V$.

Complete Electroweak Chiral Lagrangian with a Light Higgs at NLO

We consider the Standard Model, including a light scalar boson $h$, as an effective theory at the weak scale $v=246\,{\rm GeV}$ of some unknown dynamics of electroweak symmetry breaking. This dynamics may be strong, with $h$ emerging as a pseudo-Goldstone boson. The symmetry breaking scale $Λ$ is taken to be at $4πv$ or above. We review the leading-order Lagrangian within this framework, which is nonrenormalizable in general. A chiral Lagrangian can then be constructed based on a loop expansion. A systematic power counting is derived and used to identify the classes of counterterms that appear at one loop order. With this result the complete Lagrangian is constructed at next-to-leading order, ${\cal O}(v^2/Λ^2)$. This Lagrangian is the most general effective description of the Standard Model containing a light scalar boson, in general with strong dynamics of electroweak symmetry breaking. Scenarios such as the SILH ansatz or the dimension-6 Lagrangian of a linearly realized Higgs sector can be recovered as special cases.

Dark Matter Stability without New Symmetries

The stability of dark matter is normally achieved by imposing extra symmetries beyond those of the Standard Model of Particle Physics. In this paper we present a framework where the dark matter stability emerges as a consequence of the Standard Model symmetries. The dark matter particle is an antisymmetric tensor field (analogous to the one used for spin-1 mesons in QCD), singlet under the Standard Model gauge group. The Lagrangian possesses an accidental $Z_2$ symmetry which makes the dark matter stable on cosmological time scales. Interactions with the Standard Model fields proceed through the Higgs portal, which allows the observed dark matter abundance to be generated via thermal freeze-out. We also discuss the prospects for observing this dark matter particle in direct detection experiments.

Lurking pseudovectors below the TeV scale

If electroweak symmetry breaking is driven by a new strongly-coupled dynamical sector, one expects their bound states to appear at the TeV scale or slightly below. However, electroweak precision data imposes severe constraints on most of the existing models, putting them under strain. Conventional models require the new composite states to come in pairs of rather heavy, close to degenerate spin-1 resonances. In this paper I argue that spin-1 states can actually be lighter without clashing with experimental bounds. As an example, I consider a composite model with a light pseudovector resonance that couples to the Standard Model gauge boson, fermion and scalar fields. I show how such a resonance leaves basically no imprint on the NLO corrections to the Standard Model. This happens not through parameter tuning, but rather as a consequence of generic properties of realistic UV completions. This pseudovector is mostly unconstrained by existing data and could be as light as 600 GeV. In the last part of the paper I briefly discuss its most characteristic signatures for direct detection at colliders.

EWSB from strongly-coupled dynamics: an EFT approach and implications for WW production

If the dynamics behind EWSB are of strongly-coupled nature, the Standard Model ceases to be renormalizable and should be instead understood as an effective field theory (EFT). Here I will discuss the systematics behind this effective field theory description. My focus will be on deriving a consistent power-counting formula and building the basis of NLO operators. As an application, I will consider WW production both at linear and hadron colliders.

Nonstandard Higgs Couplings from Angular Distributions in $h\to Z \ell^+\ell^-$

We compute the fully differential rate for the Higgs-boson decay $h\to Z\ell^+\ell^-$, with $Z\to\ell^{'+}\ell^{'-}$. For these processes we assume the most general matrix elements within an effective Lagrangian framework. The electroweak chiral Lagrangian we employ assumes minimal particle content and Standard Model gauge symmetries, but is otherwise completely general. We discuss how information on new physics in the decay form factors may be obtained that is inaccessible in the dilepton-mass spectrum integrated over angular variables. The form factors are related to the coefficients of the effective Lagrangian, which are used to estimate the potential size of new-physics effects.

On the Power Counting in Effective Field Theories

We discuss the systematics of power counting in general effective field theories, focussing on those that are nonrenormalizable at leading order. As an illuminating example we consider chiral perturbation theory gauged under the electromagnetic $U(1)$ symmetry. This theory describes the low-energy interactions of the octet of pseudo-Goldstone bosons in QCD with photons and has been discussed extensively in the literature. Peculiarities of the standard approach are pointed out and it is shown how these are resolved within our scheme. The presentation follows closely our recent discussion of power counting for the electroweak chiral Lagrangian. The systematics of the latter is reviewed and shown to be consistent with the concept of chiral dimensions. The results imply that naive dimensional analysis (NDA) is incomplete in general effective field theories, while still reproducing the correct counting in special cases.

Recent developments in nonleptonic kaon decays

I review the current status of nonleptonic kaon decays, placing special emphasis on the recent theoretical progress. In particular, I concentrate on 3 points: (i) the improved determination of ε_K, including both perturbative and nonperturbative contributions; (ii) the efforts to tame (K -> 2π) transitions in lattice QCD; and (iii) the use of holographic methods to solve the vector meson dominance puzzle in (K -> 3π).

Searches for strong dynamics signals in gauge boson pair production

I briefly review the construction of the effective field theory of a nonlinearly realized electroweak symmetry breaking and apply it to the study of gauge boson pair production. I will consider WW, ZZ and γZ production at linear colliders as reference illustrative examples. I will show that in all cases a consistent effective field theory treatment allows to encode the dominant new physics effects entirely as gauge-fermion vertex corrections. From naive dimensional analysis one expects these corrections to be at the per mille level. However, they grow with energy, such that at TeV colliders (LHC and futures linear collider facilities) these new physics effects can easily amount to 20% corrections to the production cross sections.

Standard Model prediction and new physics tests for D0 -> h+h-l+l- (h=π,K; l=e,μ)

Motivated by the recent evidence for direct CP-violation in D0 -> h+h- decays, we provide an exhaustive study of both Cabibbo-favored and Cabibbo-suppressed (singly and doubly) D0 -> h1+h2-l+l- decays. In particular, we study the Dalitz plot for the long-distance contributions in the (m_{ll}^2,m_{hh}^2) parameter space. We find that near-resonant effects, i.e., D0 -> V(h1+h2-)l+l- with V=ρ,K*,ϕ, are sizeable and even dominant (over Bremsstrahlung) for the μ+μ- decay modes, bringing the branching ratios close to the LHCb reach. We also provide a detailed study of the angular asymmetries for such decays and identify signatures for new physics detection. In particular, new physics signals can be neatly isolated in asymmetries involving the semileptonic operator Q_{10}, where for typical new physics scenarios the effects can be as sizeable as O(1%) for the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed modes.

Effective Theory of a Dynamically Broken Electroweak Standard Model at NLO

We consider the Standard Model as an effective theory at the weak scale $v$ of a generic new strong interaction that dynamically breaks electroweak symmetry at the energy scale $Λ\sim $ (few) TeV. Assuming only the minimal field content with the Standard Model fermions and gauge bosons, but without a light Higgs particle, we construct the complete Lagrangian through next-to-leading order, that is, including terms of order $v^2/Λ^2$. The systematics behind this expansion is clarified. Although similar to chiral perturbation theory, it is not governed by the dimension of operators alone, but depends in an essential way on the loop expansion. Power-counting formulas are derived that indicate the classes of operators required at the next-to-leading order. The complete set of operators at leading and next-to-leading order is then listed, based on the restrictions implied by the Standard-Model gauge symmetries. We recover the well-known operators discussed in the literature in connection with the electroweak chiral Lagrangian and in similar contexts, but we collect a complete and systematic list of all terms through order $v^2/Λ^2$. This includes some operators not discussed in explicit terms before. We also show that a few of the previously considered operators can be eliminated via the equations of motion. As another important result we confirm the known list of dimension-6 operators in the Standard Model with an elementary Higgs doublet, essentially as a special case of our scenario.

ElectroWeak Precision Observables at One-Loop in Higgsless models

We study the viability of generic Higgsless models at low energies when compliance with EWPO and unitarity constraints up to the TeV scale are imposed. Our analysis shows that consistency with S and T can be achieved at the one-loop level even with a single light vector state, m_V <= 500 GeV. However, this scenario turns out to be strongly disfavored when direct resonance searches at the Tevatron are also taken into account. We show that a fully consistent picture can be obtained if an axial state is introduced. Interestingly, m_V is still predicted to be light (below 1 TeV) while typical values of m_A span over the window 1.2 m_V <= m_A <= 1.4 m_V. Our results for the vector channel are rather robust and well within the reach of present-day colliders, while the axial channel is more loosely constrained.

A holographic approach to low-energy weak interactions of hadrons

We apply the double-trace formalism to incorporate nonleptonic weak interactions of hadrons into holographic models of the strong interactions. We focus our attention upon $ΔS=1$ nonleptonic kaon decays. By working with a Yang-Mills--Chern-Simons 5-dimensional action, we explicitly show how, at low energies, one recovers the $ΔS=1$ weak chiral Lagrangian for both the anomalous and nonanomalous sectors. We provide definite predictions for the low energy coefficients in terms of the AdS metric and argue that the double-trace formalism is a 5-dimensional avatar of the Weak Deformation Model introduced long ago by Ecker et al. As a significant phenomenological application, we reassess the $K\to 3π$ decays in the light of the holographic model. Previous models found a fine-tuned cancellation of resonance exchange in these decays, which was both conceptually puzzling and quantitatively in disagreement with experimental results. The holographic model we build is an illustrative counterexample showing that the cancellation encountered in the literature is not generic but a model-dependent statement and that agreement with experiment can be obtained.

A new determination of α_s from hadronic τ decays

We present a new framework for the extraction of the strong coupling from hadronic τdecays through finite-energy sum rules. Our focus is on the small, but still significant non-perturbative effects that, in principle, affect both the central value and the systematic error. We employ a quantitative model in order to accommodate violations of quark-hadron duality, and enforce a consistent treatment of the higher-dimensional contributions of the Operator Product Expansion to our sum rules. Using 1998 OPAL data for the non-strange isovector vector and axial-vector spectral functions, we find the n_f=3 values α_s(m_τ^2)=0.307+-0.019 in fixed-order perturbation theory, and 0.322+-0.026 in contour-improved perturbation theory. For comparison, the original OPAL analysis of the same data led to the values 0.324+-0.014 (fixed-order) and 0.348+-0.021 (contour-improved).

K^+ -> pi^+pi^0e^+e^-: a novel short-distance probe

We study the decay K^+ -> pi^+ pi^0 e^+ e^-, currently under analysis by the NA62 Collaboration at CERN. In particular, we provide a detailed analysis of the Dalitz plot for the long-distance, gamma^*-mediated, contributions (Bremsstrahlung, direct emission and its interference). We also examine a set of asymmetries to isolate genuine short-distance effects. While we show that charge asymmetries are not required to test short distances, they provide the best environment for its detection. This constitutes by itself a strong motivation for NA62 to study K^- decays in the future. We therefore provide a detailed study of different charge asymmetries and the corresponding estimated signals. Whenever possible, we make contact with the related processes K^+ -> pi^+ pi^0 gamma and K_L -> pi^+ pi^- e^+ e^- and discuss the advantages of K^+ -> pi^+ pi^0 e^+ e^- over them.

The hadronic light by light contribution to the $(g-2)_μ$ with holographic models of QCD

We study the anomalous electromagnetic pion form factor $F_{π^0γ^*γ^*}$ with a set of holographic models. By comparing with the measured value of the linear slope, some of these models can be ruled out. From the remaining models we obtain predictions for the low-energy quadratic slope parameters of $F_{π^0γ^*γ^*}$, currently out of experimental reach but testable in the near future. We find it particularly useful to encode this low-energy information in a form factor able to satisfy also QCD short-distance constraints. We choose the form factor introduced by D'Ambrosio, Isidori and Portoles in kaon decays, which has the right short distance for a particular value of the quadratic slope, which is later shown to be compatible with our holographic predictions. We then turn to a determination of the (dominant) pion exchange diagram in the hadronic light by light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. We quantify the theoretical uncertainty in $(g-2)_μ$ coming from the different input we use: QCD short distances, experimental input and low-energy holographic predictions. We also test the pion-pole approximation. Our final result is $a_μ^{π^0}=6.54(25)\cdot 10^{-10}$, where the error is driven by the linear slope of $F_{π^0γ^*γ^*}$, soon to be measured with precision at KLOE-2. Our numerical analysis also indicates that large values of the magnetic susceptibility $χ_0$ are disfavored, therefore pointing at a mild effect from the pion off-shellness. However, in the absence of stronger bounds on $χ_0$, an additional $(10-15)%$ systematic uncertainty on the previous value for $a_μ^{π^0}$ cannot be excluded.

Antisymmetric tensors in holographic approaches to QCD

We study real (massive) antisymmetric tensors of rank two in holographic models of QCD based on the gauge/string duality. Our aim is to understand in detail how the AdS/CFT correspondence describes correlators with tensor currents in QCD. To this end we study a set of bootstrapped correlators with spin-1 vector and tensor currents, imposing matching to QCD at the partonic level. We show that a consistent description of this set of correlators yields a very predictive picture. For instance, it imposes strong constraints on infrared boundary conditions and precludes the introduction of dilatonic backgrounds as a mechanism to achieve linear confinement. Additionally, correlators with tensor currents turn out to be especially sensitive to chiral symmetry breaking, thus offering an ideal testing ground for genuine QCD effects. Several phenomenological consequences are explored, such as the nontrivial interplay between $1^{+-}$ states and conventional $1^{--}$ vector mesons.

Padé approximants and the prediction of non-perturbative parameters in particle physics

Commonly used techniques to study non-perturbative aspects of the strong interactions have a deep connection with rational approximants, and in particular with Padé approximants to meromorphic functions. However, only recently this connection has been acknowledged and efforts at fully exploiting it are only starting. In this article I will briefly review the most prominent techniques used in non-perturbative strong interactions with special emphasis on its relation with Padé approximants. I will then concentrate on a set of open problems outside the scope of these conventional techniques where Padé approximants might be extremely useful.

Chiral corrections to the f_V^T/f_V ratio for vector mesons

In this letter we compute the leading chiral corrections to the ratio between the tensor and the vector decay couplings for the lowest lying vector meson multiplet (rho, K^*, phi). We show that the leading chiral logarithms arise from tadpole contributions and are therefore entirely fixed by chiral symmetry, while the next to leading corrections are purely analytic. Interestingly, the flavour structure of the chiral logarithms implies that only the rho meson is sensitive to pion logarithms. By examining SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times U(1)_S theories we show that this result can be easily understood and that it holds to all orders in the m_s expansion. Recent lattice data seem to comply with our results.

Chiral Perturbation Theory with tensor sources

We construct the most general chirally-invariant Lagrangian for mesons in the presence of external sources coupled to the tensor current \barψσ_{μν}ψ. In order to have only even terms in the chiral expansion, we consider the new source of O(p^2). With this choice, we build the even-parity effective Lagrangian up to the p^6-order (NLO). While there are only 4 new terms at the p^4-order, at p^6-order we find 78 terms for n_f=2 and 113 terms for n_f=3. We provide a detailed discussion on the different mechanisms that ensure that our final set of operators is complete and non-redundant. We also examine the odd-parity sector, to conclude that the first operators appear at the p^8-order (NNLO).
