Bremsstrahlung emission and plasma characterization driven by moderately relativistic laser-plasma interactions

Relativistic electrons generated by the interaction of petawatt-class short laser pulses with solid targets can be used to generate bright X-rays via bremsstrahlung. The efficiency of laser energy transfer into these electrons depends on multiple parameters including the focused intensity and pre-plasma level. This paper reports experimental results from the interaction of a high intensity petawatt-class glass laser pulses with solid targets at a maximum intensity of $10^{19}$ W/cm$^2$. In-situ measurements of specularly reflected light are used to provide an upper bound of laser absorption and to characterize focused laser intensity, the pre-plasma level and the generation mechanism of second harmonic light. The measured spectrum of electrons and bremsstrahlung radiation provide information about the efficiency of laser energy transfer.

High charge plasma electron bunches from two collinear laser pulses

An optical injection scheme into the laser wakefield accelerator by preceding injection pulse is investigated by means of 3D numerical particle-in-cell simulations. Quasimonoenergetic hundred-pC electron bunches as short as 6 fs can be generated. Optimal beam separation distance is found at the intersection point of the injection beam bubble with the collection volume for transverse injection into the accelerator beam bubble. It approximately corresponds to the plasma wavelength. The main advantage of this scheme is the localized injection of high charge. This injection mechanism can be useful for applications such as ultrashort and relatively intense X-ray radiation sources such as a betatron radiation or Thomson backscattering, time-resolved electron diffraction or for seeding of further acceleration stages.

Inverse Compton scattering from solid targets irradiated by ultra-short laser pulses in the $10^{22}-10^{23}\,\mathrm{W/cm^2}$ regime

Emission of high energy gamma rays via the non-linear inverse Compton scattering process (ICS) in interactions of ultra-intense laser pulses with thin solid foils is studied using particle-in-cell simulations. It is shown that the angular distribution of the ICS photons has a forward-oriented two-directional structure centred at an angle $\vartheta = \pm 30^\circ$, a value predicted by a theoretical model based on a standing wave approximation to the electromagnetic field in front of the target, which only increases at the highest intensities due to faster hole boring, which renders the approximation invalid. The conversion efficiency is shown to exhibit a super-linear increase with the driving pulse intensity. In comparison to emission via electron-nucleus bremsstrahlung, it is shown that the higher absorption, further enhanced by faster hole boring, in the targets with lower atomic number strongly favours the ICS process.

Gravitational wave generation by interaction of high power lasers with matter. Part II: Ablation and Piston models

We analyze theoretical models of gravitational waves generation in the interaction of high intensity laser with matter, namely ablation and piston models. We analyse the generated gravitational waves in linear approximation of gravitational theory. We derive the analytical formulas and estimates for the metric perturbations and the radiated power of generated gravitational waves. Furthermore we investigate the characteristics of polarization and the behaviour of test particles in the presence of gravitational wave which will be important for the detection.

Gravitational waves generated by laser accelerated relativistic ions

The generation of gravitational waves by laser accelerated relativistic ions is investigated. The piston and light sail models of laser plasma acceleration are considered and analytical expressions for space-time metric perturbation are derived. For both models the dependence of gravitational waves amplitude on the laser and plasma parameters as well as gravitational waves spectrum and angular distribution are examined
