Annotations Mitigate Post-Training Mode Collapse

Post-training (via supervised fine-tuning) improves instruction-following, but often induces semantic mode collapse by biasing models toward low-entropy fine-tuning data at the expense of the high-entropy pretraining distribution. Crucially, we find this trade-off worsens with scale. To close this semantic diversity gap, we propose annotation-anchored training, a principled method that enables models to adopt the preference-following behaviors of post-training without sacrificing the inherent diversity of pretraining. Our approach is simple: we pretrain on documents paired with semantic annotations, inducing a rich annotation distribution that reflects the full breadth of pretraining data, and we preserve this distribution during post-training. This lets us sample diverse annotations at inference time and use them as anchors to guide generation, effectively transferring pretraining's semantic richness into post-trained models. We find that models trained with annotation-anchored training can attain $6 \times$ less diversity collapse than models trained with SFT, and improve with scale.

Monte Carlo Simulation of The Adjoint Coulomb Gas

Monte Carlo simulation results for unitary matrix quantum mechanics, describing two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory coupled to a finite density of non-dynamical quarks (adjoint Coulomb gas), are presented. We characterize the deconfining transition in this model, by measuring the Polyakov Loop Susceptibility and employing finite-size scaling analysis. We provide evidence that the phase transition is first-order. Our results are consistent with the outcome of earlier large-$N$ studies of the model.

Causal three-point functions and nonlinear second-order hydrodynamic coefficients in AdS/CFT

In the context of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM, we compute the finite 't Hooft coupling $λ$ correction to the non-linear second-order hydrodynamic coefficient $λ_3$ from a Kubo formula based on fully retarded three-point functions using AdS/CFT. Although $λ_3$ is known to vanish in the infinite 't Hooft coupling limit, we find that the finite $λ$ correction is non-zero. We also present a set of Kubo formulae for the non-linear coefficients $λ_{1,2,3}$, which is more convenient than the one that has appeared recently elsewhere.

Hall viscosity from gauge/gravity duality

In (2+1)-dimensional systems with broken parity, there exists yet another transport coefficient, appearing at the same order as the shear viscosity in the hydrodynamic derivative expansion. In condensed matter physics, it is referred to as "Hall viscosity". We consider a simple holographic realization of a (2+1)-dimensional isotropic fluid with broken spatial parity. Using techniques of fluid/gravity correspondence, we uncover that the holographic fluid possesses a nonzero Hall viscosity, whose value only depends on the near-horizon region of the background. We also write down a Kubo's formula for the Hall viscosity. We confirm our results by directly computing the Hall viscosity using the formula.

Hydrodynamic Long-Time tails From Anti de Sitter Space

For generic field theories at finite temperature, a power-law falloff of correlation functions of conserved currents at long times is a prediction of non-linear hydrodynamics. We demonstrate, through a one-loop computation in Einstein gravity in Anti de Sitter space, that this effect is reproduced by the dynamics of black hole horizons. The result is in agreement with the gauge-gravity correspondence.

Bulk viscosity and spectral functions in QCD

We examine the behavior of the spectral function for the trace of the stress tensor in QCD in the two regimes where it is possible to make analytical progress; weak coupling, and close to a second order QCD phase transition. We determine the behavior of the bulk viscosity in each regime. We discuss the problem of analytic continuation of the (lattice) Euclidean correlation function to determine the spectral function. In each case the spectral function has a narrow peak at small frequency; its shape would be challenging to extract accurately from lattice data with error bars.
